We were on the job when we all stood roll call three and four times a week, hats and batons on, weapons every Wednesday. We even got gigged by Inspectors for wearing our clip-on tie in the button hole. And the old timers told us (correctly) that we had it easy because they stood roll call six days in a row, all watches.

I can see both sides here, as some younger officers think they don't have to adhere to anything anymore, and free for all anything goes. That's a problem. On other hand, you have some old timers or people who assume that over 15 years on job (which isn't like the golden days of 30+ who actually earned the voice), still pretending to live the mentality, "we suffered, so all you have to too also." That's a crap way of thinking, instead of just having common sense on both sides of the spectrum. Let us not forget... standards are good and professional, but let's not burst our bubbles thinking we are some class act agency, because for the last decade or two, idiots/ morons / merits have been promoted over and over and over, and all of sudden, we are to jump up and pretend we are such a professional department with crap leadership. I would assume if Super Larry who could iron and fix his uniform up perfect, while assigned to an academy for his whole career, than everyone should, huh. Maybe the 50's,60's and 70's CPD "appeared" to be ultra professional (and uncomfortable) in uniforms and stand up roll-call everyday of the week, but wasn't there all sorts of thievery going on with DOA's, selling bodies to funeral homes, lots of misconduct, sex on duty, alcohol on duty, fake overtime if you were buddies with the time keeper or the bosses with 5K CU on the books at retirement. Common sense should be common sense..... don't wear dumb crap on uniform, adhere a bit to what we should be wearing, but let's not pretend that overnight uniform standards upheld are going to solve the department's and city's corruption, horrible un-meritless promotions thru the ranks overnight. We all respect our elders and senior officers, but let us not be delusional and pretend it's all legit all of sudden. It is always uplifting to begin a communique to your underlings with threats and add additional threats further into the narrative. Obviously, Betandorf has not read much of how to effectively manage and inspire your management team and their subordinates. His basic quest is sound and is obviously and severely necessary, just look around any district station, but his method of implementation is sub-standard. My way or the highway does not motivate people, other than to strengthen their desire for the "my" person to be hit by a falling asteroid.

I came on in 1970. I don’t remember that many problems with the uniform. When they eliminated the white stripe on the pants we still had the wool pants. That’s when guys went out and bought the polyester cheater pants (some even got bell bottoms-popular in the 70s) before the city approved the wool polyester mix. Then you had guys who couldn’t wear the uniform caps because it might spoil their beautiful coiffures. And some wouldn’t wear the radio probably because of the old radios mounted in the cars. So it was always interesting to see these guys on a call with the radio in one hand and the hat in another. I hardly remember any beards and if there was any facial hair it was only a day’s growth.
In 40 years I saw the uniform appearance decline. Everybody wants their own look. A few things that always amazed me were people would be out in the rain with sweaters getting soaking wet but would not wear a raincoat. And people who wore ill fitting uniforms that were too small or too large. They need to find out why the ISP always look sharp.
But the most important thing in today’s climate is to safe from the bad guys and a city administration that does not back up their police officers. When the morale is low don’t expect too much from the rank and file and in the uniforms.

Leaving early meant you left on the hour instead of the half hour. The lack of discipline is embarrassing!!

Those were different times. My uncle was on in the 50 to early 80s. The stories he told were nothing short of movie worthy. As politically incorrect, perhaps some corrupt, etc they had personalities - good & bad, amusing, angry etc. My uncle allegedly sold Polish sausage sandwiches at the airport while on duty. Maybe the tales were just tall but those guys could tell them. There were still a few around thru the 1990s- ALL characters. Nothing like the dullards now who think they are more interesting than they actually are.

Supervisors have no time to enforce uniform standards when they themselves are slobs and work half tours.
If you are in proper uniform and appearance and handle your jobs accordingly, nobody can “mess” with you, especially when you have a general knowledge of the job you chose. If you do encounter a supervisor that goes beyond that to “mess” with you, knowing your job will be key and can easily be ended.

I remember in the early 90's a boss I liked approached me after roll call and asked if he could write me up for poorly shined shoes during a roll call inspection. I said sure...a month later I was put in for a uniform appearance recommendation.

From 1992-2002 we stood in roll call every single day and of course weapons inspection also included helmets and raincoats on Wednesday. And we weren’t released from check off until at least 15 minutes after the hour or longer depending on when the midnight watch commander walked into the room that was next to the roll call room. I fucking hated it especially when I transferred to a neighboring district that was much more relaxed and saw how nice it was to be treated like adults.

The problem is there are so many “uniform” varieties now that it’s hard to even know what’s appropriate. It used to be very easy. There were just pants and shirts. How about let’s just go back to that to make it easy. Get rid of the stupid cargo pants, the quarter zips, etc. make it easy like it used to be.

So, at least someone is saying that it is too late to implement any standards. Good luck with that thought pattern. For this type of blow back, you can thank the people who think that the rules do not apply to them. The supervisors can implement standards, especially if they are already in effect. They will just enforce the rules and regulations on everyone. The smart supervisors are going to start taking official corrective actions to cover themselves. This is one of the reasons why I have turned down promotions (plural). I am not going to be responsible for people who cannot comprehend that this is a job.

I recall SSC posting an old B&W newsreel from the 1890's of coppers marching down State Street. All were men about 6 ft tall, wearing the tall Keystone Kops hats and holding up their wood clublike batons. They wore the old double brass button wool overcoats and almost every man had a big mustache. Now, those guys were the REAL police!
