And what's this rumor out of 018 about an officer becoming a Jehovah's Witness and claiming she can't carry a gun any more? That's part of the job you applied for, and if you cannot meet that qualification then you need to resign or be separated.
The Department has separated tens of dozens of others who couldn't carry weapons due to medical conditions or legal issues. Allowing someone this "work-around" would open up an entire can of worms.

I remember about 20yrs ago a female showed up at the area to qualify and when they asked her to empty the magazines (swap for ball ammo) she said, "there's no bullets in my gun". I recall during my time on the job that a female officer converted to orthodox Judaism , and she could not work weekends, you know that old sundown Friday to sunset Sunday rule. The city did accommodate her . They had no choice. But, cannot carry a weapon because of her religion ? Who knows how this will turn out. The department is large enough to accommodate and that is the general guidelines.

A goof tried the Jehovah's Witness excuse in 014. He wanted to be assigned permanently to a lockup position somewhere within the department. He was told he could resign his police position and apply for a detention aid position.

When I was in the academy, we were still in khakis, but a female in the class in front of us, in her blues, was walking around with a master lock in the trigger guard, behind the trigger. An instructor sees this and asks about it, she replied, " This way, I'll never accidently shoot someone." She be gone, but this was in the 80's.

Similar incident two years ago. PO just off probation goes into the WC says he wants religious accommodation, sundown on Friday to sun up Monday, so needs all weekends off for religious accommodation. WC has him put it in writing and then told him he will be assigned to whatever day off group he was in, and he would accommodate his religious exemption, but he would have to request to use elective time on any Friday, Saturday or Sunday that was not his RDO. He will exempt him from the 15% rule and allow him to be off once the slips are submitted. The officer said he was told he could just be assigned weekends off, the WC told him whoever told him that may have their own scam going, but you don't. Drop the slips on the dates your religion requires or submit another report withdrawing your religious exemption request. He withdrew his religious exemption request. WC got a call from legal affairs a few days later and they told him he was 100% correct, he would have to allow the officer to be off but the officer would have to use elective time. These bosses today need to learn what their supposed to do, and then do it. Won't name any names.
