CrimeFile was Correct

We're told this came out officially recently:

  • The Sig Sauer P320 is being phased out and will no longer be an approved firearm.

All members who have the Sig Sauer P320 as their prescribed duty weapon must transition to a new approved firearm. Members who have a department approved Alternate Prescribed firearm other than a Sig Sauer P320, may opt to reclassify that firearm as their Prescribed duty weapon, consistent with U04-02-01 "Department Approved Handguns and Ammunition," in lieu of purchasing a new firearm.

The Training and Support Group, Firearms Training Section will be hosting "Gun Days" on the following dates: Monday, 05 May 2025 0600-1200 (Training Academy 1300 W. Jackson Blvd. Tuesday, 06 May 2025 0700-1300 PSTC (701 N. Kilbourn) Wednesday, 07 May 2025 0700-1300 PSTC (701 N. Kilbourn) Vendors will be displaying and accepting orders for Department approved weapons and ancillary equipment, including optics, lights, holsters, belts, etc. All Department members are welcome to visit and place orders.

We are also told that the City is going to refuse to reimburse Officers for the gun that THEY approved as a Duty Weapon, claiming that's what the uniform allowance is for. Some commentators say that this is a contractual issue meaning it's going to end up as a grievance at some point. We're more worried about the training issue as we wrote about last month.

How many guns are we talking about here?

I am 100% PRO-Gun.

However, I lost total respect from Sig after they came out with the below BULLSHIT official statement last month.
This IS a dangerous gun with bad flaws.
I will never buy another Sig.
It's almost like Jussie Smollett claiming to be a victim.

They will just keep violating the law and contract and in the end, the tax payers will get screwed royal.
There are over 1000 officers with the P320.

Well I will love being the test case? I can see showing up to roll call and the watch LT having to do weapons inspection. When the LT gets to me I dare him/her to look at the P320 I am holding? Then go File the uniform complaint on me which will start the grievance? If you young pups don’t remember, the City outlawed police from using the metal flashlights because they were used as weapons? So, City bought everyone new plastic rechargeable flashlights? Under new uniform rules?
You can already see plenty of used P320 models showing up in gun stores all around the county. Do not spend your uniform allowance on a forced uniform change. This one is on the city dime.

It’s gotta be a small amount of coppers I would think.
For the most part, I doubt anyone who’s really done their homework was choosing the P320 to be their prescribed duty weapon.

5/02/2025 06:28:00 AM

So in a way the city is admitting that the gun is not safe by phasing it out. The phase out process does not appear to be immediate with a hard deadline. So what happens if an accidental discharge occurs during a pointing incident during this “phase out” process? That amc message opened up the city for liability by not immediately ceasing the carry/use of the sig.

Absurd. Notice that the department didn’t provide an explanation for the phase out. No reimbursement, no nothing. This department hates us.

I haven't been a recruit for over 20 yrs, but I don't remember getting a uniform allowance while I was in the academy. I would bet most of the banned P320s were bought while POs were recruits in the academy when they weren't receiving a uniform allowance. That for sure sounds like a huge grievance.

Sig 320 great trigger in part due to a perfectly balanced sear engagement. A cocked 1911 style 1.73 lbs trigger pull with no safety to impede 1st to last trigger pull. Polishing that sear as some gun aficionados do after every day at the range or before they go to bed at nite be a problem waiting to happen. Get U a G17 21 round duty gun for to cut weight on belt & save $ or get U a 226RM-9-LEGION-SAO 21round duty gun F the weight & $. When responding to calls KNOW where your rifle is at during daylight. At Night operations switch to your rifle if solo car, especially if U are backup car/overwatch. Your District is NOT Mayberry RFD & your backup maybe Barney or Betty Fife.

Scc tip. Sheriff Dart reportedly has filed for 5th term under possible FBI probe.

Drake Carpenter and Aracelis Gotay, who were the assistant executive director and director for incident command respectively, claim the Sheriff’s Office abruptly fired them two years later only after they raised allegations in their third amended complaint that “Sheriff Dart forced employees at the DOC [Department of Corrections], including plaintiffs, to volunteer without pay for his reelection campaign to give him an unfair advantage over his opponents.”

In November, the court ruled that their claims of retaliation for protected speech could proceed. According to court records, their case is pending settlement approval by the Cook County Board of Commissioners. The terms of the settlement have not been publicly disclosed.

Pagani’s complaint, which was initially filed in December 2024, raises similar allegations about employees forced to work for Dart’s 2022 reelection campaign.

In March, Dart kicked off his fifth bid for reelection.

seriousness:

I didn’t want to sound the alarm—but someone had to. Owners of the Sig Sauer P320 deserved to know there may be a grave safety risk lurking in their holsters. How long the department plans to sit on this potentially explosive issue is anyone’s guess—but silence is not an option.

Sig Sauer has long been hailed as a gold standard in firearms, a Swiss powerhouse with a legacy of precision and reliability. But even the best can falter. If this weapon is truly flawed, the company must act decisively—no half-measures, no spin. Lives could be at stake. In an imperfect world, vigilance is not optional—it’s our duty. Especially when our families, our children, and our fellow officers are nearby.

What’s even more disturbing is the added pressure on our officers—many of them with teenage kids—already crushed by inflation and broken promises. The city made a deal. The FOP contract demands that they honor it. But leadership? It’s a trainwreck. And this won’t be the last betrayal. It’s just the latest in a long line of failures that leave our officers holding the bag—again.
Be safe, follow your training and always be prepared to transition into your next career.

The Dept./City will put you in a no pay status for not having a duty weapon.
You could lose your house as well as a lot of other shit because you were not getting paid.
You will probably win the case/grievance YEARS down the line.

THE ANSWER: File a grievance now and just buy another gun and holster. Wait for the grievance to be won years down the line.

I find it ridiculous that a bunch of coppers making a good salary and receive a uniform/gear allowance are crying about buying a new pistol. These are the same Millennials that will cry about spending $1000 on a firearm (a lifesaving tool that you will last a lifetime), duty holster and magazines...but have no problem spending thousands on a new phone or some lights on their Jeep (either of which will last only a few years). {snicker} Sell that P320 now and recoup some money and then do your homework buying a new firearm that you can depend your life on. Crybabies.

To be fair the US military and Pentagon selected this firearm as a pistol fit for military use by our fighting men and women. Can't blame the CPD for thinking our own military would never buy a dangerously defective pistol. (And don't give me that crap that theirs is different because it has a manual safety. They've been having the same problem with defective internals and NDs.) Interesting to see what the USMC investigation that started this week will discover...

Thanks for this Paul...but let's make this clear. Sig Sauer is no longer "a Swiss powerhouse". That Swiss-German company that created the legendary P220 and P226 are long long gone. Sig Sauer was bought out by shady American businessmen and moved its headquarters to New Hampshire in 2007. It has never been the same company since and the military-contract corruption and infamous poor quality control are what the Sig label is more known for. As a patriotic American and longtime Sig-fan this is heartbreaking.
Furthermore...the CPD is in a much better position than most departments over this dumpster-fire. We have several options for a duty pistol and get a generous uniform allowance. Most departments are dirt-poor and their one and only option for a duty pistol was a P320.

The Sig company will file for bankruptcy in the next few years. By the same time next year you won't be able to give your P320 away for free. Fact.

On CPD notifications on FB, you can find the link (or search yourself on youtube...) a video by a renowned firearms instructor named DJ Shipley, came out 3 days ago to help with your search. He's pretty good at showing you what might cause the malfunctions. Check it out. Personally if I owned a P320, I'd leave it in the safe for a bit. Sincerely people, I'm retired and don't get the uniform check anymore. When I was full time, I made sure that I bought at least a gun a year. From the early designs and early models of the p320 the sear has the ability to be prone to rounding of the sear and the ability to fire without depressing of the original triggers from videos. The pistols some serials would sometimes fire fully holstered and without depression of the trigger. It wasn’t drop safe also on some p320s produced and would fire at certain angles or with a rubber mallet at the rear. Sig replaced the trigger with a different one. This may have fixed the issues? Certain serials weren’t built with the quality as prior Sigs or the quality control wasn’t there on the sear. Since it’s a striker fire pistol this pistol has the spring at full tension. a manual safety would disengage the sear and make it drop safe etc. they didn’t choose to do that from what I read.

As far as striker pistols that are fully vetted there’s the Glocks, HK VP series Smith & Wessons etc. my HK vp9sk is the only striker fire pistol I carry a manual safety, but it has a flawless safety trigger and multiple internal safeties. I love HK nothing better imao except maybe a Glock. The Glocks are also very torture tested and drop safe etc.

I carry a Sig p229 DO SA although it’s a heavy pistol. But its build quality is better than most current Sigs. A hammer fired pistol is more expensive to make. My micro is a FN reflex with an internal hammer and no manual safety.

I agree that attacking their customers wasn’t prudent. Lots of great pistols out there that tried and true. The build quality of the early Sig P320 just wasn’t the quality of previous Sigs. The military version has a manual safety so the issue wasn’t there. I’ve owned a few pistols that had these kind of problems that were fixed but I still got rid of them after them being fixed a FN. IMO if the gun has any discharges from drop safe or internal issues I get rid and replace that pistol. Stay safe…

DJ Shipley is a proven paid promoter for Sig Sauer. He lacks credibility. Watch several other actual gunsmiths and firearm trainers on YouTube about the defective pot-metal internals (made in India and Indonesia) and third-world P320 design keeping the firing pin in a cocked but rearward position. Very sus. Look up the YT channels "Regular Guy Training LLC - Why the Sig P320 Was Never Good" or "Joey Russo - Why I No Longer Use the P320".
