As residents all across Chicago continually complain of the city's high rat population, a new effort launched by the Chicago Bird Alliance aims to find a humane solution to the problem.
Teaming up with a national nonprofit organization, the advocacy group is administering rat birth control on peanut butter palettes in a drive to move away from poison in rodent control.
Chicago's rat reputation has long been cemented, with Orkin naming the city the country's rattiest city each year for the past decade.
“We’re using poison still, right? And there’s still rats everywhere, so it doesn’t seem like it’s working,” Chicago Bird Alliance executive director Matt Iegleski said.
No word yet on which connected aldercreature is going to be supplying all the tiny rat condoms.
We did hear that Conehead is volunteering to fit them on the rats though.

This has repeatedly been discussed on the blog and I will repeat what I posted a couple of years ago. A friend of mine is a supervisor with Streets and San. He told me that around 15 years ago the city stopped using poison and started using the birth control bait. However, much like the line from Jurassic Park, “Nature finds a way”. The birth control bait never has and never will work. Instead, he baits his own alley and recommends every city resident do the same.
Poison kills a lot of other creatures. A whole owl family was poisoned to death last year. Most likely I getting poisoned rats. Choose what you want, but you keep spreading it and you won't have any wildlife either. That owl family probably killed a lot of rats.
The area near Ricobene’s (26th Wentworth) to ((31st Union) is infested with large rats.
To be fair, rat poison kills so many birds and also kills all other wildlife and it's a brutal death for animals. If anyone loves animals, this is worth a shot. Rat poison wiped out a family of owls that bird groups had watched.
Are these rats counted and included in the US Census numbers?
The Chicago Bird Alliance should worry about all the pigeons and let the city keep killing the rats.
It's a city more concerned with salaries, benefits, pensions and corruption. Actual service to the taxpayer comes dead last!
Capture the rats alive and give a bag of them to each person being deported as a participation trophy.
How about enforcing the laws that require garbage cans with sealed lids? Oh, I know we already have them. It does not do much good if the lids can’t close because the bins are overfilled. Clean up the city and the rats will be under control.

Put a bounty on dead rats. Set it high but reasonable (say, a dollar for every dead rat turned in) and the problem will solve itself.

Dry ice in their burrows but the city wouldn't use because rat feeh-wings. There is also a product RatX, the main ingredient causes only rodents to lose the sensation of thirst, so they stop seeking out water, and dehydrate to death. It doesn't harm predators that might eat the rodents. And a hidden, dehydrated rodent corpse doesn't stink up the place. But rodents might not find it very palatable, so best to mix it with something else so they eat it.
