I've had some amazing dispatchers over the years. Carlos and Chris Cain saved my ass more than a few times. A good dispatcher can get the adrenaline on the rookies down (car chases in 025 and 007 come to mind). This dispatcher sounded out of line.

That’s how all of the dispatchers. Fat democrat voters who despise the police and think they could do a better job. I went there almost ten years ago when I left the academy to observe. The dispatchers just talked about how lazy they thought cops were and how they needed to arrest someone, I don’t remember the call details. I got a very poor impression of the culture there and it hasn’t changed.
I nominate zone 4 1st watch as worst dispatchers in the city.

DEI hired. I was at headquarters a couple of weeks ago in civilian dress sitting waiting to talk to someone and I've heard two older F/1's, civilians, talking so much crap about the police. I was 10 feet away from them and obviously they didn't know who I was and they didn't care apparently. I'm glad I've been gone this long, and no, I didn't want to be there but had to since the city fucks up all the time.

All dispatchers hate coppers. They’re scum. Don’t invite them to watch parties or unit parties. They’re there to get dirt and put in complaints. Don’t give them your phone numbers. They’re not your friends and never will be. They cheer when you get injured and cheer when you get falsely accused. It’s truly a mind bending thing for the city to hire such an important police function out to police haters.

Surprised I'm not. I complained one time that the dispatcher was high as a kite on the zone and was told by her supervisor (a retired cpd sgt) that dispatchers are not drug tested nor is the use of drugs any violation of the rules.

Once upon a time, a majority of the dispatchers were are friends, good people that did their jobs professionally and the bad ones were the exception. Sadly, the exceptions have now become the rule and they are NOT our friends !

On the CFD at least, we were always expected to pretend that people like this weren't useless morons. Whenever someone complained to the brass about people like this, the response was "No, we're lucky to have them. They are a real asset to the team." And morale just kept on going down.

Back in the 70's on Zone 5 we has three outstanding dispatchers. There was "Lum" , Joe & Del. The were invited to watch parties. When Lum retired 2 & 21 had a retirement party for him. I remember him sitting by the bar with tears on his cheeks. Three great guys from the second floor of 1121.
It's a culture of this, everywhere the culture is.

I can’t pinpoint it. I can’t explain it but for some reason for some odd reason that is beyond my comprehension things like that don’t ever happen on the Fire Operations Floor. No PPP loan hustlers, no airwave violators, nobody with contempt for CFD or CPD. No FMLA pretenders. I always wonder why that is.

A far cry from the likes of Stan the Man on Zone 10 in the early 90's. He was our lifeline. Knew his shit, got us the help we needed, and looked out for us. One time he heard an officer key his radio and it was evident the copper was in trouble. Stan knew the voice and knew where the copper liked to grab his lunch at that time of day. He sent cars there without hesitation and got him the help he needed. Those were the days of real dispatchers.

Once upon a time, the majority of dispatchers were retired officers. They definitely got it. But I've had a lot of solid dispatchers over the years, including recently, so let's not paint such a broad brush. But yes--there are some doozies out there who need a different line of work.
Not all the dispatchers hate the police and there are still some good ones. Its not fair to categorize all of them as fat, police hating Democrats. 3rd watch has some good dispatchers, zone 3, zone 10, and zone 12 all have great dispatchers. Oh and fyi that dispatcher is also married to a cpd officer.

My uncle got shot on the job and became a dispatcher when he was made limited duty. He couldn’t run anymore. He retired from 1121, in a different time. Imagine, someone not taking disability so they could remain on the job.

Back in '87 there was a dispatcher named Gloria Steele working the zone. Helluva dispatcher, managed car chases, shootings, never lost her cool, one of the best...She's probably out of prison now, she and her son were running dope houses in the Second District and caught Fed charges I believe. Its obvious we need more dispatchers like Gloria over at OEMS. Hopefully the city rehired her after she got out of jail..

I can’t pinpoint it. I cant explain it, but for some odd reason that is beyond my comprehension I cant do the arithmetic on what the odds r that 1 parent and 2 sons r all CFD call takers hired within the last few years!
statisticians need to math out the odds of 1 family having the best applicants. Lawyers need to FOIA all the applicants to validate that 1 family really is better.
That sounds like a potential class action lawsuit for rejected applicants. It’d be very interesting if veterans, active duty or retired police, emts, nurses, applied and were rejected. Do they have qualifications that would place them above others? What was the size of the training class?

2. Nobody is applying to be a call taker with Fire anymore. There might be 10 total applicants at the most every year and maybe 6 show up for the exam. So if those men got hired it’s because the odds are pretty darn good you will if you can pass an exam.
3. Stop being modest we don’t make that much. We make a lot more and work far less.

Youre misunderstanding. I think it is an incredible thing that a mother and 2 sons are all CFD call takers. A statistician should come in and figure what the odds are of such a situation. Then a lawyer should FOIA the applicants and validate those were the 3 best candidates and confirm the statisticians findings!
