What's Her Sell-By Date?
Because we think it passed a while ago:
Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas is joining the 2027 race for mayor of Chicago, but she doesn’t want to talk about it until after she is safely reelected next year to an eighth term in the job she has held since 1998.
Pappas, 76, a baton-twirling grandmother known for her flamboyant wardrobe and sharp wit, has flirted with running for mayor for decades but has yet to pull the trigger on a mayoral campaign.
This time, Pappas says she’s in it for real, whether or not embattled Mayor Brandon Johnson seeks reelection, and no matter how crowded the field of challengers becomes.
So who's backing her? Mayoral runs are expensive.
Also, with the wide open primary field, every one runs and the top two go on to the runoff. Her declaring the intent to stay in seems like a ploy to split an already fractured voter base - kind of like how Fioretti ran a few years ago to draw away support and get the Machine to pay off his campaign debts. Or the assorted black candidates who divide up that shrinking bloc like Willie Wilson.
Who gets shafted by Pappas entering and staying? Rahm or Groot looking for a replay? Mendoza? Some other commie "progressive"?
