Video EVERYTHING!!!

But since it turns out that the vast majority of the video shows citizens acting like assholes and police acting professionally, there's an effort to restrict who can see what. CWB reports

  • CWBChicago editor’s note: Using Illinois’ open records laws, our team was recently able to secure body camera footage that showed a Markham police officer recovering a loaded firearm from the center console of a convicted murderer’s car. That video also showed a Harvey alderwoman identifying herself to officers at the scene, inquiring about the arrest of Tyrone Muhammad, who was released a short time later after an intervention by Markham Police Chief Jack Genius.

In the following report, the Better Government Association details this year’s efforts by Illinois legislators to restrict public access to police body camera footage, restrictions that, if enacted, could limit transparency that is so critical in policing.

CWB reports there are six different bills (all of which seem to have died in committee) that would have further restricted body camera use, viewing and retention.

It pays to keep an eye on this stuff if you're still working because you will get trick-bagged if you run afoul of the constantly changing rules....and we all know how good the CPD is at keeping you up-to-date on changes to the law.

The city should stop releasing files to the media. The city should set up a web site with a paywall. For a monthly fee any subscriber watch any body camera, CTA, cps, park district, etc. For a higher fee people could view crime scene vids and case reports. The budget would a surplus!

CPD is good for wasting your time on hours long e- learning and going to different training that shouldn’t even be in existence. Kind of like the class that is 8 hours that tells you that you have a duty to intervene if you see wrongdoing. Ummmm, no shit, especially since everything is on BWC. Thanks for the 8 hour reminder, Captain Obvious.

So first, I'm not LEO, not related to any LEOs, not in Illinois anywhere.

Are Chicago LEOs prohibited from purchasing and using their own bodycams as a second bodycam, in addition to the (presumably) department provided "official" bodycam? So if one of those (insane) bills goes through, a LEO could have an "unofficial" video record of their own (and hey, if the media / various orgs that keep tying your hands can use "random passerby cell phone video that starts 20 minutes into a stop" as "proof") to combat it. Sure, most "media" wouldn't show it, but the unofficial media at least might.

Of course, this also ends up adding rather more weight to what I'm sure are already weighty gear-loads, as well...

I know a suburban cop who was disciplined for transferring body cam footage to his personal e-mail. The footage was of an off duty, drunk Deputy Chief threatning the officer to leave the scene of a bar fight. Off course nothing happened to the Deputy Chief. Most departments claim all footage is their property and it cannot be transferred for personal use or otherwise.

so for years the "community" howled about needing to put cameras on cops to stop the out of control police brutality. What the cameras actually showed was how completely uncivilized "the community" actually was and is and how they lie continually. Calling them animals is an insult to animals. Now there's an effort to politicize the access to camera footage so only the stuff the media can lie and spin into police brutality gets released. Camera footage that confirms the police reports will just not be released.

It kinda is already happening as the media openly lies about almost everything and doesn't care if you know they're lying. They refuse to cover stories that can't be twisted to fit their narratives and the rest is pathetic spin. The news stations in Chicago all have the same stories in the same order with the exactly same talking points every night. That alone tells you how fraudulent it all is.

Great society we have here in america now. We are half-stride behind western europe. Keep voting for democrats......

Body cameras explode the left’s narrative that most police are corrupt and are killing blacks. The cameras actually show the world exactly who the criminals are, and they expose their lies. Media can’t fan the flames of racial strife when the truth is right there for everyone to see. Look for the use of body cameras to be ended, just like shot spotter was axed.
We need to keep pushing to oust the leftists in government and media. They are on the verge of enslaving all of us.

Recently a young copper thought it was a good idea to post a compilation of arrests, pursuits, and guns being recovered from his own body cam. He posted it on instagram, on his public profile, a la “jump out boys” style. Someone with common sense probably told him how horrible of an idea it was, and he took it down a short time later. You can do good police work but your own ego will jam you up! Don’t record your own body cam footage and post it on social media. Can’t believe it has to be said.

Since by now we are all "trained" to know everything we do is recorded, I have zero problem with real time access at random to what my camera is viewing anytime I activate it.
Let the public pay a subscription fee to view any and all cameras by beat, by star, by name, by district, at any time or place...
Let the public know fully well what policing has become for the usual recipient of our customer service as we babysit and corral and humor, indulge, pacify, and accommodate their madness and off-the-wall behavior.

Liberals love to claim a certain group is "over incarcerated" when the simple fact is THE EXACT OPPOSITE IS TRUE.

You're right about that. Bodycam videos are very popular on YouTube, and the comments following are largely in favor of police. People are able to see the whole picture, and most remarks are in the vein of "I would never have the patience with that person that the officer showed." Bodycams backfired bigly on the race baiters (BLM) and other activists who are anti-cop.

I would suggest to every Po/Det/Sgt etc., is to install 2 camera systems in your personal car. I am not talking about the $29 piece of junk at Walmart or target. Get the 3-camera system that has a front facing, interior one to keep an eye on you, as well as one that looks out the rear window. Make sure it is on at all times when you are in the car. This way it will protect you in the event of a situation. It can also do the opposite if you are an Idiot. In that case you should not have on in your vehicle. In the event of an "incident", I would not tell any on duty LEO that you have a dash camera rolling. I would remove the SD micro card and make copies of it and give one to your personal attorney.
Remember! It's for your personal vehicle and don't act stupid to jam yourself up.
Stay safe and merry Christmas.
Big Money.

I actually don't see an issue with this. Regardless of FOIA, I believe there's a Federal Court file system PACER which charges fees for info past a certain page point. There's all these people sitting at HQ who have to answer, redact and send that stuff. That's salaries of officers that could be doing police work. Have people establish accounts - generate some revenue from it. Accept never expect a surplus of money. This is Chicago- it'll probably go to CPS for some bullshit.

Case in point: the media will often put a "Graphic Content" warning when they do show stuff (not likely for a deterrent but rather establishing a pov bias prior) and the content shown has little or nothing that would even be considered "graphic or violent."

BWC were hardest for police like me- on my way out or officers with 10-15 years on and not used to the whole having to push buttons just to do your job. If that's all you've ever known, I'm sure it's not as big a deal and many of us old timers are gone since they've been implemented. I'm glad they are helping officers more. The only real issue is still public bias. You can show some people the truth but if they are committed to their spin on it- you'll never convince them otherwise even with a recording.

That's why some downstate departments are seeking modifications to the law. Pajama kids and Lucy Lefty are sending FOIA requests for anything and everything and then posting to it to social media - it's their pretend version of COPS, produced at taxpayer expense.

As a civilian addicted to police cam videos, it is my impression that dashboard and body-worn cams have been the best thing that ever happened to the public image of police. We can now be entertained or horrified by thousands upon thousands of interactions which belie the popular narrative of the last several years of police as bloodthirsty, racist monsters, and criminals as innocent upstanding victims. Are anti-police leftists feeling buyer’s remorse? Do they hate the fact that the police are coming out looking better, and the public is really learning that the vast majority of people who are pulled over, arrested, locked up, roughed up, shot or killed, really deserved it?
I also realize there have been bad cops who cut corners and do bad things. And also credit the ubiquitous camera culture to force them to either shape up, or ship out.

Agreed, as a certified police cam addict….. It’s amazing how you see the same personalities getting arrested in video after video after video, different cities, different states, different bodies, but basically the same characters and often they do and say the exact same things. They fake injuries or illnesses, they claim they can’t breathe, they claim their pregnant or have to get home to their babies, they say they didn’t do nothing, they blame the other person, they blame the cops…
