An Opportunity!
Unfortunately, due to efforts of Conehead, Groot and the 9.5-digit-midget, there isn't any money to rectify this issue:
Nearly two decades after a $1.15 billion deal privatized Chicago’s parking meters, a window has opened to seize the valuable asset back from private investors. Mayor Brandon Johnson’s administration is at least exploring the idea. But the mere discussion of the multi-billion acquisition raises more questions than it answers.
Chief among them is whether a city already saddled with more debt per capita than any big city in the nation should borrow billions more to buy out the 57 years that remain on the parking meter deal that Chicagoans love to hate.
“The original deal was a disaster for taxpayers, and we have to make sure that we don’t compound that disaster,” said Ald. Bill Conway (34th), vice-chair of the City Council’s Finance Committee.
A former investment banker who still teaches finance at DePaul University, Conway said the leveraged buyout would use meter revenues as collateral on the loan.
First of all, this would (probably) involve hiring massive numbers of parking enforcement people, which if we know government employees (and we do), would be a massive drain, even if they got the Police Department to pitch in.
Second, there would be quotas....and quotas lead directly to corruption on a massive scale. Which means you'd need body cameras or some sort of oversight for the enforcement people - meaning another massive expenditure.
Third, as the article states, there is a declining need to go where the meters are, mostly downtown. In fact, there is a concerted effort to discourage driving downtown, let alone parking there. And with businesses fleeing in massive numbers, conventions leaving for warmer, friendlier climates, tourists going to where they won't be robbed, beaten or shot, the "doom cycle" sets in. Higher pricing discourages drivers and less drivers using parking necessitating higher fees, etc, etc.
Seems like a losing proposition either way.

But...Lil Richie Daley said that it was good for Chicago.....
What happened ?....
Vote democrat for more.
Your reading too much into it all they would have to do is hire off duty police officers and maybe even fire fighters and either pay them a set hourly pay or pay them by the ticket say 10.00 a ticket now you got cops walking around the city all hours of the day and night that will reduce crime and generate great income for the city. Special employment at its best.
The whole thing is messed up. They gambled and lost. Now they want to gamble again with more of taxpayers money. Just move on.
Hold out for a better offer or open city parking lots near high parking zones. Drain it back from them. Find some loop holes. Didnt the bike lanes take out a lot of those spots? Amazon? Crime? Bikes need licence plates with stickers, city stickers and mandatory insurance oh my.
Something is not right, why would anyone sell an asset that is making them money? They have already collected more revenue then what they paid the city. So two things: one they are no longer collecting the revenue levels as before or they are going to ask for 2 or 3 times the amount they paid the city, in which case the city will never be able to pay back the loans needed after all the overhead needed in extra city employees.
the great 75yr daley deal
A great way to show off the mayor's management skills.
Just imagine how much of a further shit show this deal would turn into with BJ s management team of CTU clowns.
Keep the meters!!! I never feed them, I never park downtown, and I’m leaving Chicago.
Its time to take back our government. The web of corruption, deceit and smoke filled back room deals needs to end already.
how about getting daley and conehead for a sit down to discuss why the meter deal was so great?
Morgan Stanley is one of the partners who leased the meters. The initial investment was recovered by 2019 and the rest is gravy. Knucklehead Shanks really blew it on this one.
If demand is down buy it back at a huge discount. They already made back their investment. Maybe they looking to dump the meters. Make a lowball offer and see if they bite or counter. And keep the middlemen to a minimum.
That is the best answer.
1. Huge bodies of inland fresh waters. Fucking HUGE. What region on this planet can compare?
2. The future is never now.
3. The Art of the Deal beckons.
Guaranteed the cost to park will then double if not triple and they can do it because people will still have the need to park downtown and other locations.
Waive $ in front of the police and they’ll do anything for it. Especially those who live beyond their means.
They would never go for the getting "paid per ticket". I'd make more writing tickets then CPD salary.
revenue levels have dropped since 2020. they want to dump it now, only idiots park downtown at meters
As if the city would ever collect fines-or bother to do enforcement.
On the bright side--just think --Favored Folks could get meters removed by their house/business or prices decreased....and thiose out of favor could see rates/hours increased FUN FUN FUN.
I do pay meters--and its a hoot how different pricing is depending on time/day/location, Never imagined paying 5 bucks for two hours (north side- NOT near north or downtown loop)--but it happens.
Hire vanecko and vanecko to secure the deal so he can steal more funds from the shitty
Well the city would issue tickets and no one would pay because it is racist and unfair. They need parking spaces for millionaires and billionaires and they should pay because that is equity
If Trump ain’t negotiating the deal, I wouldn’t trust it.
Hate to admit but maybe Shithead Daley was right. The declining revenue in downtown and the North Side due to crime and lack of shopping is causing less people down there. Most of the people unfortunate to live there either have private parking or don't own cars. Shithead Brandon is emptying out retail so there's no reason to spend any money. It's like going to downtown Detroit to spend the day...Daley started the destruction, Brandon's Communists are finishing it. Get out when you can. I did..right after I retired.
If investment firms are looking to unload some of their properties there must be a reason. That said, the city is not capable of getting a fire sale bargain from the repurchase of the parking meters.
Daley made a fortune selling this and the skyway. Why has the FBI never indicted that prick? Oh, I know why they're corrupt and Daleys brother is tied to sparkle farts.
Just forget that deal and leave it as a Mayor Daley dumb curse!
I NEVER park in Chicago, and always head to the suburbs for the big parking lots and the same stores that the city has along with NO bag taxes and lower sales taxes!
Once I retire I will NOT ever care to go within the city and Cook county limits for anything!
Even the Bears are leaving the city and possibly the White Sox!
Nice job Mayors!, past and present HA! HA!
That’s actually something I would support. With inflation over the next 57 years we will absolutely get that money back. We got a billion for it. Daley figured we would win, the company made that 1 billion back in less than 5 years. We would’ve stupid not to buy it back. Shouldn’t have happened in the first place.
The next thing Conehead will attempt to buy back is the Chicago Skyway lease. At least on that he will make money from all the people fleeing to Indiana.
Cops walking around hahahaha you have to be a house mouse to say that without loling off your desk chair in the commanders office.
Half the POs wont even get out their car to properly place a parking ticket on a car. Yea paying per ticket .. dont see any ethical issues with that one. Just look what Cops did when early ducks or even a cushy spot was used to incentive activity... ruined CC, blue cards, shiii they even ruined doing dispersal.
Cut ot for POs but offer them employment outside their regular shift to make extra cash to pay for all the taxes and fees they have to pay for fear of getting their pay docked and taking time if they dont.. unlike the Mayor or CTU members.. then rhe city and dept have the nerve to pretend to care about POs mental health due to "having" to work to much.
I keep saying it .. we have the power to bring this all down by stopping proactive policing and just answering your jobs. Due the min.. thats what it will take to bring them to their knees with us. Just look how quick that whole defund the police movement went when crime shot up due to less proactive police work. Yeah its still there but these clowns arent using it as election promise anymore or being as blatant as they were at first. Now the its up to use to continue to reverse the trend of police are the problem, policing is racist, and what ever else that clown claimed. Give him what he wants and stop being that abused wife who keeps coming back even though each time she gets her arus kicked worse than the last.
Was it a gamble? Not for the investors. You’re right, just move on.
If they take it over do they bring back the meter maids and their exorbinent pensions too?
Tax the meters
--"Special employment at its best."
Entrepreneurs could also deputize family and friends to pre-fill the forms, scout expired meters, and tag the vehicles... 100 tickets would be $1,000.00!
Until competing crews...
They are greedy They want at least double their initial investment by selling at at least double the initial purchase price. If what you say that they made back their initial purchase price , that took 18 years. For business men or anyone who want to wait 18 years to double your money
Loopholes? The contract says the city pays them if the meters are taken out of service City also has a formula where they pay if a handicap person uses the meter free
Correctamundo!
What kind of moron chops down a money tree just to get all the money leaves at one time?
And by “good for Chicago” , he meant Great for his bank account.
Whenever I park downtown i fill out a parking ticket and slap it on my windshield so the meter maids leave my car alone. Then when I get home I shred the ticket. Problem solved.
Can I ask why Chicago can't simply declare free parking everywhere except obvious fire hydrants and driveways? Let it go till they bail then start again.
Nah. The City kept the enforcement and fines, and writes the tickets and collects the fines. It sold meter revenue. Whether it makes sense financially to buy back the meter money requires more math than I can do. I don’t pretend to be a finance guy.
Well,15 years from now, vehicles will be autonomous, no need for parking meters, therefore generating very low
Revenue.Your Welcome Brandon.
With the municipal unions still forcing meter maids and parking meters there was no revenue. Daley got rid of it all so it could finally be modernized. No way that would have happened under city government with the union jobs at stake.
taxpayers were shafted in the original deal, taxpayers will be shafted again if Conehead buys the meters back. It's a small club and you aint in it.
They failed to land the great white shark which was Peotone.
Ask these questions: Why would the rip-off artists that purchased the meters for a dime on a dollar want to sell them back to the city?? (Profit of course) Do you think they know the reduction of businesses and online shopping will reduce parking revenue?? Then, ask yourself, if the mayor wants to avoid fines to the people of color, would that reduce the income even further than the bullshit numbers the Finance Department will come up with to sell this to the City Council?
Well maybe the "city run food stores" will have parking meters instead of free parking lots?? Answer: No! as stated above.
So why do it when you have no money and are using laughable numbers of return on investment?? Possibly "donations" to the never empty election campaigns?? The Chicago Way!
I, for one, always feel good about sending my parking dollars to the deserving and needy Sultan of Oman. Think of all the good I'm doing! And think of how my money would be wasted if it were sent to Conehead.
So the City sold it for $1.15 billion dollars. They will buy it back for $4 billion dollars. The interest on the loan will be covered by the revenue from the parking meters. Which bank will make all that money? The one owned by the Pritzker family? The one owned by the Giannoulious family? Or Chase Bank which has a couple of employees named William Daley & William Daley Jr.?
I hate to say this but, Downtown, during the Daley Admin was pretty safe, and prosperous with the shops and stores being open.
Downtown started to go downhill in the 9 1/2 Digit Midget era, then took a shit under shitfoot and 2020, and hasn’t recovered.
The coffin nails will be Harolds or Sharks somewhere on the Mag Mile.
Joe Perillo and his Ferraris / Bentleys will soon become Mohammad's “pre-owned” cars with no money down.
Lululemon will be a Beauty Salon that moved from 79th St.
Those million dollar condos will quickly turn into Section-8. The ones unlucky enough to stay will have to put up with the stench of stale weed and getting their crib broken into on a regular basis.
Im betting before 2050.
Gets outs while yous can!
Someone that spent a shitload of those “leaves” on bullshit, and needed the money NOW to pay for other bullshit.
Not like contributing to a Pension Fund, or anything important like that.
See yesterday’s post on COVID money.
Daley took good care of downtown in 90s and early 2000s. Summer of 2008 is when it started going to shit. Ferals became empowered. What was sweeping the nation in the summer of ‘08?
We would be stupid to buy it back. If the big money investors felt it would be a long time money maker they would keep it. There is a reason for this sales talk, that said we have not heard the truthful reasons why big money want to unload the parking meters.
The parking meter company has a contract. Yes the city can declare "free" parking but the city would still be required to pay the meter company for their anticipated revenue.
One that knew he would be leaving soon.
Wanted to cash-in his chips and get his cut ASAP.
No late fees at the library either
Richie was a protected informant for awhile..That's why he never got pinched..
The Feds outed him in a Chicago Tribune article after he refused to continue to snitch..
Richie only stepped down after Obama stabbed him the back so Rahm could run for Mayor..
Nice trick. But keep it on the down low
