Further Info

More on Betancourt - Larritorious' letter:

 Slum Times coverage:

  • Chicago police are grieving following the sudden off-duty death of Deputy Chief William Betancourt, who Supt. Larry Snelling said “embodied what it meant to be a public servant and great leader.”

Early Saturday after a medical emergency while he was off-duty, Betancourt, 60, passed away, Chicago police said.

He was never in our direct chain of command, and he didn't appear much in the blog comments, which is usually an indicator of someone who could be classified as "decent." He was in charge of 010 during the ILLEGAL ALIEN sex scandal that was complete made-up media bullshit and accounted himself well enough.

We certainly wish he could have enjoyed some of the retirement he earned.

What burns me is that Will recently talked about the extreme stress and pressure he and all the other exempts were under with this current “regime” incharge of our department. He spoke about how he hasn’t had a good night sleep in years because the phone is max volume, emails dinging all night long and every time one dings he has to look just incase it’s something he needs to “call him” about because god forbid you miss notifying “him” about some banger getting shot on his pinky finger at 330 in the morning. If you missed notifying then you would get chewed out. I can tell you since I have had a pretty major heart attack in my past. Stress, pressure and lack of a good night sleep or a constantly disturbed sleep is a recipe for disaster. Stress is accumulative. It silently builds while putting more and more pressure on your body, nervous system and heart. It raises certain chemical levels that pretty much put you on a collision course for a heart attack or stroke down the road. Bill spoke about the pressure and stress ALOT. He never bad mouthed, because that’s the kind of guy he was but he was tired you could tell. Rip

I will attest that he was a pleasure to work with when he was a Sgt. Always made small talk throughout the years and was always cordial. You’d know what to expect and what he expected of you. RIP Will.

These politicians and bosses act like these commanders have a cure for cancer. Here’s the thing about these bosses that got promoted under Eddie Johnson’s tenure and moving forward to present day. They were never the police and need to have an answer about police work. Let’s be honest… why in the fuck is anyone calling , texting or emailing someone at 0300 hours because some shit head got shot. Here’s the answer , nothing good happens after midnight and if you’re out and about you might get shot. Period.

RIP Boss. 4 or 5 years back I was assigned to a overdose on the CTA blueline in Rosemont(yes Rosemont). Out of nowhere Petancort shows up to assist with his driver. They immediately offer any help to help with the scene. Both Penta and his driver are very down to earth.

He was in my sergeants class January 2007. Not a bad guy but never, ever passed a test and every single promotion was by merit meaning he couldn’t answer any test questions correctly. If the only qualification to be merit promoted is “nice guy” then Santa Claus would be our superintendent, not Snelling.

Maybe a smarter guy who actually that actually earned the promotion would be more capable and experience less stress.

My ex partner died from brain tumors as a District Commander. No one forced promotions on him, he took every offer that came his way. The good and the bad. Compstat meetings. Probably would have went to 63 if he could of. He would have retired a millionaire with accrued benefits, as most in that position do. He was a good street cop, knew his stuff, never hurt anyone. A POLICEMANS POLICEMAN. Bless the good ones who maintain a little humility and humanity. None of us get out unscathed. No one ever said any of this was fair. Most of all, GOD BLESS THE ONES WHO STAY AND DO THE GRUNT WORK.

He had 30 years plus was 60YOA - he could have retired years ago. He chose the stress & phone calls at 0330hrs over his health because of the shiny gold piece of tin on his chest.

Yes. The man was stressed but never showed. Unless you were in his inner circle, he hardly ever talked about the pressure he was under. He was a class act. He took calls all hours of the day because he wanted to have an answer for Hein, the biggest pussy to ever wear the uniform.

Hein called him to HQ during El Grito because he decided to go home and use the bathroom, grab coffee, and see his family. Hein cried because Will wasn't in 025 when he was "supposed to". Fuck Hein. Will sacrificed his health so Hein's bitch ass would lay off. Fucking clown. Go back to the cornfields you grew up in.

I'm guessing Larry is super insecure as he knows he didn't get to where he is on actual merit alone and this is why he can't be seen to have dropped the ball on anything therefore he'll ream out any boss that doesn't give him a heads up on any thing that's happened ! Just shows he's not confident or qualified for the position he's in ! Hope the May rumor is true but I dread to see what this complete moron identity politicing asshole Mayor will put in his place !

Of course CPD has never done it correctly.

“Street deputies” should be handling everything during sleep hours, say 22:00 to 07:00. Exempts keep phones silent only allowing calls from HQ for,
officer fatality, shot, or severely injured. Then the exempts in the officers chain of command are called.

Many of these scenes turn in to an exempt circle jerk because they are expected to be seen.

Better rest leads to less stress and mistakes.

This is why golden braid pensions should be maintained with better incentives like allowing them to collect overtime while they are working. It is only fair. Let's do right by the deputy and demand reforms.

Street deputy should be making all late night notifications about shootings if the chiefs and supe want to be notified. You have a midnight street deputy for that reason. CPIC and street deputy should monitor the board and notify when something happens. If chief wants a call then call the chief and handle the details with the district WOL. Email the chief and commander a brief note about the shooting with the details. Not a chance I’m waking up at 2am for a call from a Lt about someone getting shot in the hand, then staying awake so I can call and email people. If a commander wants to be called, the he can leave specific instructions with his LT’s of when to notify him and how to do that. Screw that, I’ll stay a captain.

Send them back to the watches and the watch lts and Cmdr and Capt can dictate where they go. Not like they do anything anymore anyway. They’re the blue card and shoplifting police now.

Will was a solid police officer. He went on tac in 014 with 2 years on the job. His tac team was assigned to the 10 sector but he was always working/responding to the most dangerous beat 1423 (the zone).
I’m a very critical person and have known him for 30 years. I’m not his buddy, but can honestly say “he’s the real police!”
He and big country made a great team.

How so? I take home a car and radio to the fort I built. When PH1 comes over the air, I ask what it’s wanted for. That’s OT slips right there. Other days when 5700A calls out an LPR hit, I ask the last known direction… more OT! Your tact LT is doing it wrong!

The only reason they are exempt is so they don’t have to pay them ot, as most work 12-14 hr days, which is why they make more salary, otherwise Capts and Lts. could run things and accrue a ton of ot, they don’t want that.

The area Lt's are a joke. They have zero responsibility for anything other than sending an occasional email about deployments or case updates. another job a secretary can figure out. No need to have a Lt doing that or being a useless tact Lt. and btw I've never seen so many phone call cry babies being assigned as Tact Lts before in my entire career. Guess nobody with experience or brains wants that spot.
