Another Crooked DEI Judge
Many judicial careers need to come to an end - here's another one:
When prosecutors ask a judge to detain someone during their first appearance on a new felony charge at the Leighton Criminal Courthouse in Chicago, the judge will side with prosecutors nearly 7 out of 10 times. That is, unless prosecutors are asking Judge D’Anthony Thedford.
Thedford, who began hearing pretrial cases at 26th Street on February 5, sides with defendants more than half the time. And in recent weeks, he has sided with defendants nearly six out of 10 times, court records show.
Appointed to the bench in 2024, Thedford started in the Traffic Division, but Cook County’s new Chief Judge, Charles Beach, reassigned him to the Pretrial Division in January, and Thedford began hearing cases on February 5.

The primary difference between Thedford and the other nine judges who actively hear cases in the 26th Street Pretrial Division is that Thedford is far more likely to release people facing firearms possession charges, even if they are convicted felons.
Another difference: For most judges in the Pretrial Division, being accused of committing a violent crime on the CTA qualifies defendants for detention as a public safety threat. For Thedford, that line is not so clearly drawn.
CWB has a whole series of cases where he just lets people go on the 100% effective Electronic Monitoring program, even for repeat gun felons and especially for CTA crimes - almost like he wants the CTA to become completely unrideable.
Hopefully, the CWB blog is keeping a list of incompetent judges and a couple of examples of their incompetence that we can help publicize closer to Election Day.

Aren't all judges these days crooked dei in crook county? Very few hold em. They simply don't want to see one race in jail but will skewer the other race for minor stuff. This truly is hellinois. More are fleeing, including the north shore. People don't feel safe.

This is crazy but I sometimes wonder if these judges do these things intentionally to show just how f'ed-up the judicial system really is in the hopes they will initiate change. Wait! What! Forget it, I just woke up.

There’s no ambiguity. It all boils down to one simple fact- there are “too many black and brown in jail” BECAUSE too many black and brown just do not stop committing crimes of violence. So, to change that narrative, those in power are not sending those who DO violent crimes TO jail- judges and prosecutors who let them out on EM and reduce violent felonies to misdemeanors and probation. Only ones safe in the governors Safe-T Act are the criminals.

I am always amazed that more people don't vote no on all judges. Why would you vote yes for someone you don't know anything about? It's just another dumbass trait of the cook county voter. Also, when there is no one running against a listed candidate I know nothing about, I don't throw a vote just to "fill" my ballot. I undervote...

You'd think that owing that much in back taxes would be a violation of judical ethics. Certainly a judge that doesn't pay his taxes should not be passing judgment on anyone.

I think one of the prerequisites for becoming a Cook county judge is that they must have served in the public defenders office at one point. By the way, Judge Gump in branch 35 is terrible.
