This is Legal?
We see a lot of challenges to it:
- Requires the Secretary of State to administer the Intelligent Speed Assistance Program.
- Provides that a driver who commits 2 qualifying offenses within a 12-month period is required to enroll in the Program, and the Secretary shall suspend the driver's license or driving privileges which shall remain suspended until the driver participates in the Program for 365 days for a driver's first Program enrollment, 730 days for a driver's second Program enrollment, or 1,095 days for a driver's third or subsequent Program enrollment.
- Sets forth requirements for notification, application for an Intelligent Speed Assistance Permit, and installation and proof of installation of an intelligent speed assistance device.
- Requires a participant in the Program to pay the Secretary a Permit administration fee in an amount not to exceed $30 per month.
- Creates the Indigent Intelligent Speed Assistance Device Fund and the Intelligent Speed Assistance Permit Fee Fund.
- Establishes....
You get the idea. you get caught speeding twice and you are required to install government monitor in your car and pay $30 per month for a year ($360 for the year).
If you get a second set of violations, it's $30 per month for two years. Third time is a three year enrollment with the $30 per month "administration fee."
You can read the whole thing at the link up top. We don't see how the government gets you to forcibly enroll in a subscription series of fines for something that used to cost you about $100 for the moving violation.
Are speed camera tickets part of this? Does the Traffic School option still exist? Since police can't chase for "minor" violations, we're seriously considering putting magnets on our license plates and taking them off when driving around town.
UPDATE: this monitor tracks the car, not the person driving it? So exactly like Chicago speed and red light tickets - the owner of the registered vehicle on the hook? Great - we'll keep Grandma's name on the title (R.I.P Nana) and keep the car at our out-of-state property.
UPDATE: Amazing that these politicians think they'll be able to monitor and track vehicles without an issue, but Electronic Monitoring for violent felons is a total failure. If this worked so well, how come child molesters and gun offenders aren't tracked at all? The failure rate of GPS trackers on domestic violence offenders is rumored to be north of 80% in terms of timely notifications.

So the registered person gets the fine/device and not the person committing the violation. Hmmmmm. Prob never happen, too much to be made on hard copies for speeding. Plus the locals get no fine money and it all goes to the state

Seeing many new speed limit signs popping up along my drive on rural roads between home and the Metra that display measured speed. Can’t help but wonder if this is the camel’s nose in the tent for this program and vehicle details can be captured as well, like flock. The funny thing with these is they will toggle the speed displayed among several vehicles nearby, both directions. Ought to be an easy path to tossing for reasonable doubt (also the “folks” exemptions).
Tackle expired plates on the road and illegal window tint. I really don’t blame the plate scofflaws in light of the high fee that fata$$ got, but it pisses me off to see it when I fork it out on time for five cars in the family that are now crazy expensive to insure (illegals and scamdemic inflation) and maintain due to IL roads that are now a lunar proving ground due to neglect. Many communities have added license plate readers, not only to their police cars, but to the light poles at every entrance into the community. These readers go into a private company that instantly has access to the SOS records and can give the police instant information that your plates or driver's license is suspended. Big Brother is here.

OT: 5 coppers in 012 were struck by a vehicle at a street takeover / block party. I’m not sure why the bosses of this sinking ship even attempt to stop this shit , because the ONLY way to do so is to use some sort of force and god forbid that happens to a certain demographic in this city. This post is exactly why people are losing trust in politics and media.
Governor Pritzker and Illinois Democrats have passed plenty of bad bills that deserve criticism. We do not need to exaggerate or misrepresent legislation to make the case.
HB4948 does NOT say that people with “two speeding tickets” will be forced to install a tracking device in their car.
The bill applies to people convicted of two or more reckless driving offenses within one year. Instead of automatically losing their license, a court may allow them to voluntarily install a speed-limiting device during probation, at their own expense.
There is no tracking provision in the bill.
You can still oppose the policy. But we should all be arguing from the same facts.
