Caught an Airbag Thief!
Better than zero....but barely:
Chicago police have arrested a 26-year-old man in connection with a string of airbag thefts on the Near West Side and in the West Loop, marking only the second known arrest tied to a theft surge that has left more than 2,000 car owners without airbags so far this year.
Ricardo Bryant was taken into custody Thursday afternoon in the 2800 block of West Flournoy Street after CPD’s Auto Crimes Task Force determined he was responsible for a series of recent thefts in the area, police said. He faces four counts of burglary and one count of possessing burglary tools. Police also said he had two outstanding warrants at the time of his arrest.
Screw it - charge him with all 2,000 open cases.
And yes, we're aware there isn't much you can do with these thefts - it takes almost as much time to get an airbag as it does to cut off a catalytic converter....and you only need a box cutter along with a brick.
But a bunch of vigilantes might help alleviate the issue.

The Area will use this guy to Exceptionally Clear Close hundreds of cases!
Most people don’t know you could charge him with burglary of an auto. Even if he was charged the useless SAO would plea it down to a theft so they can count it as a win. They do not like to bring cases to trial. And then the judges will give him electronic monitoring which will count as time served. This arrestee more than likely cost the victims and the insurance companies thousands. But the loss wont hurt those companies because they just keep raising your rates to pay for it.
vigilantes might strap him to a chair wrapped in stolen airbags rigged to trigger...
could be a nice ppv on Xfinity
They gotta be selling all these airbags somewhere? Have someone keep an eye on junk yards when they go to sell them. But usually the junk yard is in on it because they lowball them when they buy the obviously stolen goods and they make a killing on the resale. Just like the catalytic converters If these businesses were not corrupt also there wouldn’t be a market for them and would be less thefts. As long as there is clients for the criminals there will be crime!
A brick and boxcutter may be of use against a thief. Just don't remain on scene, good citizen. I (and I assume others) wouldn't look very far or hard for you. <3
Case closed!
Promote accordingly.
Heard that there are a lot of out of state buyers.
Is Ricardo here legally ? Why have we not ask that question ? Where is ICE when you need them?
This is simply a case of the Great Unwashed Wesside Man doing what he does best.
Did I read that right? Chicago the murder capital of the world has a “task force devoted to the theft of auto accessories”. I feel so much safer now.
Agreed. Find the buyers and punish harshly
Somebody needs to rig an airbag up like some people have done to packages stolen by porch pirates. It would make for some fun videos.
Make VIGILANTES great again!
MGVA
I would recommend the vigilantes use a revolver...
Ever hear of the Broken Window Theory? It basically says crack down on the little things and the big things will go down also. This is not a minor issue. A lot of the airbag/cat converter thieves will shoot and have shot at anyone trying to interrupt their activities. Not a non-violence crime exactly.
They should just smash both of his hands with a sledge hammer and call it a day. You can’t steal if your hand don’t work.
Out of state buyers makes it a federal rap?
If they're still doing multiples, he will confess to all the open thefts.
You do realize these task forces go after armed individuals, the same ones who commit shootings.
They used to shoot horse theives. Anyone who disables a citizens transportation should be treated the same. Car jackers and auto theives also. A working person (or anyone for that matter) suffers greatly, could even loose their employment, when their automobile is disabled.
Actually, he should be charged with PSMV. Stealing a car or parts of a car all fall under PSMV. Read the statute under 625 ILCS.
Where was ICE for this guy? Did no one call?

One problem with the Broken Window theory is that there are no consequences when we make arrests for all those minor crimes considered broken windows. The cases all get dropped or put on EM over and over, and so the "broken windows" are never fixed, meanwhile the roof is leaking, the water pipes are broken, the foundation is cracked, walls have holes in them. The Broken Windows theory only works if you fix the broken windows
100 percent. Horse thieves were punished by death.
Take a look at Ebay. Thousands of used Honda airbags are on sale there.
