Another Suicide?
An unconfirmed report of an Officer nearing retirement, but facing some internal discipline, took his own life a few days ago.
The Department (according to numerous people) has steadfastly ignored this occurrence with nary a single mention or the usual e-mail from Larritorious.
Keep an eye out on your fellow Officers and seek help if you're at that darkest point. The Chaplains and EAP do decent work with this.
Prayers and condolences.

Dear SCC,
Thank you for your concern.
I got on in 86, I can tell bullshit and insincerity.
You folks are solid.
The upper management of CPD is garbage! The bosses are scum. They drive offices who gave everything and worked hard to throw it all away. I don’t know who did the unthinkable but, I have seen officers who just don’t care anymore! It’s the bosses, stupid!
Larry will be gone along with Brandon! Can’t wait to vote against this team. The FOP is also a disgrace! Need a new group there too!
The department covers things up that they don’t want to get out. The worst is BIA, they rig investigations involving the white shirts.
CPD is messed up and no one cares. Morale doesn’t matter. I personally know several officers going through a lot. The department is all about make it work for me. The place has become all about BS.
We are supposed to be helping people. ;(
Oh, this is just agonizing. My heart aches for his family.
Not surprised. The job is ran by idiots. CPD is more difficult. The job is no longer fun. Just do the best you can and go home. Everyone hates us.
This won’t be the last. The city and the department put a lot of this in motion. My heart goes out to the family.
A few years back, an organization, We Never Walk Alone, offered a suite of mental wellness services to the department for free. Dr Sobo said since the majority of that organizations peers were suburban cops, CPD wouldn’t be able to relate to them.
I’m not surprised. The job has become the job nobody wants. It got that way from politicians and gold stars. Surviving has become a lot harder.
Gold stars get me sick……………….
Another sad day. You will feel no pain, no more. I don’t know who you are. But tonight reading this. I feel your pain.
To the bosses reading this; you never know what kind of day someone is having. Be kind and compassionate. Enough with being a taskmaster.
Things have to change.
Rest in peace.
We work in a toxic work environment that just likes to discipline officers for any little thing nowadays. Blue shirt are treated like trash by this department unless you have clout. We are not better either, we treat each other like trash also. This job is high school with guns.
Started the sobriety process right after retirement. For me, it was a process and definitely wasn't easy. Best thing I could have done for myself. Think about it.
He was a very good man and a great police officer. His sister’s unexpected death and his relationship with his ex. brought out demons that he couldn’t handle.
RIP B.D. from a fellow classmate 99-3
Yes it's true. He killed himself in Michigan. Summer home perhaps? 27 years on in his fifties
Prayers for our brother or sister, their family, and those who served with them. This has gone beyond being an epidemic.
It’s time for a succession plan. Larry Snelling, please leave. You cannot handle the evolving needs of the department.
just an absolute great guy, he will be missed
Yes, another one from Michigan from here happened in Michigan not gonna get into the details another failed relationship leave it at that. He was a great guy who was seeking help. Keep an eye on each other. Boys and girls. Listen to what your fellow officer has to say do not disregard and if you see, they need help help them to get it. Sometimes you have to go to a higher authority in the department, let them know so they can get this person into a program before they do the most selfish thing. Suicide affects so many people around you remember that you’re not just doing it to yourself you’re doing it to others for the rest of their lives think about it first, please! This is coming from a person they copper who considered suicide but sort out and help prayer helps seek Dad seek Jesus go see a pastor in a remnant church
Well said, but your life is much more important then CPD.
another officer from 005, just an absolute great guy, always smiling and always nice to everyone. look after your fellow officers
The Dept sincerely doesn't give a f*** about you. I've been in 376 for a few years, for a non-criminal matter that could have been wrapped up inside of 6 months, and that's being generous with time. No real disciplinary history, so by Dept "standards" of progressive discipline, this should have been a warning / violation noted and maybe some mandatory counseling. Nope. C0PA (Criminals Over Police Always) wants separation and the undeserving and overpromoted gym teacher agreed. So now I sit in the land of misfit and broken toys. With many many years of impeccable service, it's enough to drive you to very dark places pretty damn easy.
Check on your friends, and check on them often. You may have forgotten about them, but they haven't forgotten about you.
Same here👍been a couple months with the 1st month being so R O U G H. But I work it one day at a time.. I'm finally at the point where when I'm out, I realize my desire to have a (?) is out of habit (abuse suffered on the job:( but I 😇 thank God for the clarity sobriety brings. Getting stronger everyday.
P,s, there are many persons promoted on this job that aren't competent to scrub a toliet.
P,p,s, to the incompetent, A-hole bosses referenced above (you know who you are), do better.
Hardest part is they usually give no signs. Most hide it well You think everything is ok and have no reason to even think about suicide and then it happens
They'll show their "crocodile tears" but of course, it's nothing to the brass/politicians. There is concern, compassion, but possibly "no one to talk to" is what we often hear" and that is sad. Nobody is worth one harming themself.
Prayers for the Officer/those involved.
As a rule officers will not seek help whether it’s free or administered by other officers
Disagree on FOP as a disgrace. They are a good organization that just needs to have the board refreshed.
There are suicide genes. The department needs to mandatory test for it! Genetics is real. Tough topic, but it's real.
ESR1, an estrogen receptor, has been previously identified as a causal genetic driver gene of PTSD and depression, which are risk factors for suicidal behaviors among veterans. Estrogen is also suspected as a cause of sex differences in depression rates, and loss of ESR1 has been found to produce effects on brain tissue in men.
DRD2, a dopamine receptor, has been associated with suicide attempts, schizophrenia, mood disorders, ADHD, risky behaviors, and alcohol use disorder.
DCC, which is expressed in brain tissue across the lifespan, has been associated with multiple psychiatric conditions and is elevated in the brains of people who die by suicide.
TRAF3 is associated with antisocial behavior, substance use, and ADHD. Lithium -- a gold standard treatment for bipolar disorder shown to reduce suicide risk -- modulates the expression of TRAF3 and several other inflammatory genes.
There's also about 9 others. Look it up.
Most BIA investigators try to help the Officers when they can, but the gold stars are afraid to take a stand and make them add every little pimpy allegation onto the investigation. Also, it's not a blue shirt/white shirt thing as to who gets the "extra" help. It's who knows and is connected to whom.
Thank you! I completely agree!
BIA is completely screwed up! They are worse than criminals.
Start with getting rid of the fop
Just go to your calls and make it to retirement.
I know! Very sad news waking up to.
Just horrible.
Booze is the biggest demon and has ruined many lives, marriages and jobs
Job is messed up all thanks to the bosses. The politicians they work for hate and defund the police. The bosses go along with it. I told my husband if I was killed, just have a private funeral. I don’t want some weird boss looking down on me. A bunch of creepy bosses.
They hate us. I am really starting to hate them. No one gets in trouble for doing nothing. Hang in there.
Gold Stars are toxic. They have no clue what is going on or what they are doing.
Just smile.
Thank you for your service!
My heart goes out to all involved.
No doubt Larry is a failure. His leadership team is a disaster. I can’t wait for him and them to move on.
Bring back the baseball caps. FOP lost them without a fight.
Very true. CPD is so messed up and it is the bosses.
Sad to say. Yes the department leadership failed us. Nothing comes from them but a bunch of garbage.
You are 100% correct!! In the 70's there were private police key clubs (I attended the one in 014), where we could drink in peace 24 hours a day and there was a back room with cots to sleep it off. I was young and dumb and grateful that those days are behind me. It was not easy but worth the price
This is what happens when you don’t think your addiction will kill you. It will,,,one way or another. RIP bro
The dept’s response is to blame the officer. Other coppers will blame this officer too. “The job was just part of the problem”. Yes that’s in fact correct. This “job” unfortunately has become intolerable. It’s become toxic beyond repair. It is not the same environment it used to be. Fun, connected, full of comradery, and rewarding. Roll calls are like funeral parlors (no pun intended). Coppers despise each other. They despise bosses and bosses despise them. They do whatever they can to avoid all public contact. Everyone knows the summer approaches with the prospect of no time off. The fop is more useless and corrupt than it’s ever been. The work has become totally undo able. Too many reasons to list here. So yeah, the job was the final straw. But it was a straw that broke the camels back.
Good choice; good luck with your recovery. God Bless.
Another cancelled weekend due to the City not willing to stand up to criminal scum. Every officer is cancelled day off on a sunday afternoon, for 12-20 hour mandatory shifts because they are not willing to cancel pride parade. They are not willing to make arrest on criminals.
Amen, one day at a time, and go to meetings!
Please seek counseling it’s okay to not be okay RIP officer
May he rest in peace now.. 💔💙💔
Too sad for words.
Lord hold him in your precious embrace and sooth his troubled soul. Seek out my fellow blue coats in dire need of healing and show them the power of your love.
Many of the 86 class members have been tested and tempted
Very sad to hear another officer took their life. Has been happening way too much lately over the last few years. The upper brass and bosses truly do not care and just make our daily work life harder on top of what people may be dealing with off duty. I have tried emailing some of the bosses about some things that are bothering and affecting officers and you know there was never a response or consideration to help out. Snelling is set in his ways and won’t listen to anybody.
Why'd you wait so long?
Still an easy way to pull down six figures. Just gotta follow a few rules and regs. Nothing worth killing yourself over. Help is waiting for you to call. They arent going to call you...Worked for bad bosses, retired, and there are still bad bosses. Went to stress management classes once a year. There were people there who were way more stressed than I was. Not because I needed it, but because my bosses always tried to talk me out of it.
You still can. Just dont get angry about everything. Pick up a senior citizen waiting for the bus and give them a lift home. Little things make a big difference. Complaining on an anonomous blog wont change anything.
Dr Sobo has been with CPD for too long. He knows a comfy spot when he sees one. I sought his help and from talking to him, I knew he had been speaking with management. He helped me marginaly, but I made some changes and got better on my own.
They may or may not be gone soon, but the pattern will continue. Chicago is a cultural mess. Its organizations are run by politicians. It is the Chicago way.
My condolences to this officer’s family and friends. I wish the people who come on here and blame the supervisors, the job or politicians would stop. I spent 30 plus years on the job and people were taking their lives back then too. Domestics, criminal or administrative charges and financial issues are usually the cause.
this i why never got married worked alot of overtime n maxed out in my deferred comp and then before i retired i hit the medical for year (my final f-ckyou from a working non clouted po. make the job work for you
WASHINGTON, June 24 (Reuters) - New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani scored a massive political victory on Tuesday when his trio of insurgent congressional candidates toppled two incumbents and the establishment favorite in an open seat, results some described as "a political earthquake" for Democrats.
All three of Mamdani's candidates have ties to the Democratic Socialists of America and favor issues such as universal health insurance and ending U.S. support to Israel's military operations in Gaza. On Wednesday, many Democratic members of Congress doubted the tremors would extend beyond the biggest U.S. city in an era when President Donald Trump has labeled even some mainstream Democratic officials as "radical left lunatics."
"The American people in New York and increasingly all over the country are sick and tired of status quo establishment politics," said Senator Bernie Sanders, a Vermont independent and democratic socialist who ran for president in 2016. "They want members of Congress having the guts to stand up to big money and create a government that works for them and not just a few."
not too fast conehead could get reelected there are alot og lib tards in the citylook at new york
Keep an eye out for your fellow officers whether active or retired? That’s a joke. CPD does not do jack shit
There’s an organization thru the police department that helps , especially the survivors and it’s through EAP
Kathleen A. O'Neill, MA, LCPC, CCTP
Assistant Director
Professional Counseling Unit/EAP
Class of 86-9E still runs it.
They disguise their feelings and are smiling and most of the other officers think they are in a good place. After the suicide everyone says” if I only knew” or “I had no idea, I talked to him yesterday and he was smiling and everything seemed ok”.
this happens in other departments too lost a couple of mt suburban friends to this also usually involves a relationship ) divorce) my advise do not get married (boyfriend or girlfriend) ok remember marriage is a federal contract
wit regards to the cpd do not drink smoke or get married i know you will survive i did n retired
SCC I hate to contradict you because 99% of the time you guys are on point except for EAP. I was going to EAP sessions once a week for a bit over two months, my counselor was fantastic and really helping me with my struggles. I had never wanted to admit that after seeing so much death in the line of duty, being involved in several police shooting it had affected me tremendously. Some might comment that I'm weak, a coward, etc. but I don't care. People who know me, know who I am. In regard to EAP, the head person there did not want me to continue my sessions anymore. My circumstances are unusual and probably they've never dealt with something like this, but if EAP really cared about officers, they would have never pushed me away. It was difficult for me to ask for help; my counselor is the only who knows my struggles. Not a friend, family member or even my wife knows about what I'm going through. I'm waiting for my appointment with my regular doctor to get a referral for a shrink. No, I'm not crazy, but PTSD is a real issue that I refused to admit. If it does not benefit the POLICE dept. EAP is not there for you; I'm the prime example. So, seek for help through you own insurance. It's even difficult to comment about in here but other officers should hopefully learn about their own struggles.
Cynthia White taught me to understand it's all BS
God bless you 🙏
Hug a 👮♂️
From the officers who were denied time due while you were on the medical, enjoy your retirement.
No pain no more.
Agree. It’s just a job.
Saw Bill Kushner on the Attention Now podcast. He is working with a group called Rising Star Ranch that does equine therapy for First-Responders and Vets. They offer free services and do not keep records. Positive outlets can help, people care about you. Reach out to a friend who might need your help.
Snelling is a degenerate.
Sure, as long as you stop reporting things back to the department.
Dr. Soto and Kathleen speak with management regularly.
Most BIA investigators are looking to screw over officers for a merit bump that they never receive.
Spot on. CPD has been a joke of a department for years...but since 2020 it has become beyond broken. You can't make an honest mistake. At least 3 officers on my watch can barely speak and write English. There are also some real retards and creeps on the job now. I rather work 99 most of the time since so many are dangerous and would shoot themselves (or me in the back) in a high-stress situation or crash the squad car just trying to get to a hot call. So many of us are going to retire early.
EAP is a useless. Another grifting unit filled with police-haters.
When a first started the was always the idiot bosses and there were a few that were really good at being the boss. Now we only have idiots. That is putting things nicely.
Eat well. Sleep well. Hobbies. Reading.
You are too valuable to the law abiding people of Chicago—who are the overwhelming majority— to waste what you have been given in terms of intelligence, integrity, physical fitness, dedication to duty, sound judgement.
To die is to die. To live is to fight and to fight is to win.
Till we get good Command staff that supports the officers nobody cares!
It doesn’t help that we talk shit constantly and tear each other down. I’ve heard and seen cops treat other cops with less respect than the shitheads on the street give us. We always talk about supporting each other and how much we are a brotherhood willing to die for each other….but look at every district and it’s just a straight up high school or corporate culture of backstabbing and shit talking. Definitely doesn’t help any cop going through a hard time. Let’s take a good look at ourselves.
Go away already. YOU are the problem. You and everyone like you. There wasn’t body cams 30 years ago. No intrusive GPS in the car. No overzelous, over-promoted supervisors. Nor was there 7 different types of oversight. Each actively looking to destroy cop’s lives. No doxing. No camera phones, no overly critical, scared to death watch commanders. No YouTube sensations. No defund the police lunatics. No coppers getting pregnant just to get time off. Officers respected and stood by one another. Or at least all spoke English. The saftey act didn’t exist. The Daley family was corrupt, but competent and understood how a world with a healthy civilization works. Chicago cops had generations from the same family that became cops. Tough, confident and proud neighborhood guys used to dominate the hiring pool. 25-30,000 people took the test praying they would be hired. Today you’re lucky if 2,500- 3,000 people sign up to take the test. It’s become a last resort for shitty candidates. It’s become a steady pay check with good benefits to people who shouldn’t be hired to work as a stock person at Target. 30 years ago was literally a lifetime ago. So stop already. There is a reason that Chicago has the highest suicide rate in the country. You’ll never understand the depravity and toxicity that dominates today’s Chicago police dept world.
This is extremely accurate and well said. You are forgotten down in that unit and it’s sad. These coppers need us, reach out to your buddies / coworkers stuck in 376, you don’t know what struggles they are going through. Could be any one of us there, remember that!
Reading these comments as I normally do two things are glaring & I hope you all read this.
1. Bosses are bosses, some great & some ain't! I'm not being cute but if you're pushing a car get out of the station & away from these morons!!
2. This is the saddest, there are multiple posts in different stories & they say something like "well everyone hates us.
My God, you're so wrong, I'm not a cop but am very close to several. I DONT HATE ANY OF YOU. I make it a point to say hello & please be safe we need you. Some smile, some (most) say thank you! But if you're going to listen to dude & the other animals. You MUST hear those of us that respect you and respect the uniform. Please know we're out here! I'm grateful to law enforcement because as bad as things are W/O you brave men & women we would be in so much more misery & pain. God bless this officer, his family & the entire CPD family. 🙏
That corrupt Boudreau is involved with that program. No Thank You. If he’s involved, he’s lining his pockets. He has cost this City enough money.
The department is ran by incompetent goofs.
federal contract? you must have been in the 'qualified' group when you got hired.
🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
living a clean life and working out daily…. relieves stress, reduces anxiety and depression. guaranteed
Sometimes it’s not police related. He seems like a great guy who handled the job well
From an ole timer. It’s still the 3 B’s. Broads(wives, exes and girlfriends) booze and bullets. Most officers have found their place on the department some still like to play police and like the job and others that don’t are inside or in a special do nothing unit Community services and units like that aren’t going to put any stress on you
The commander staff have nothing to do with our well being. We are responsible for our own health.
Thanks Dr. Vinny Boombatz
So it's Snelling's fault now that someone who got themselves
'caught up' took the suicide way out? I don't think so.
And in no way do I support Johnson, but it's not his fault
either. Wrongdoing officers have been killing themselves
for quite a long time when their (alleged) deeds were exposed.
That's always going to happen, and it will continue to happen,
and in a lot of professions besides law enforcement. People
do crime, but can't face the time.
This has nothing to do with SUPPORT. Someone got themselves
caught up, and took this way out. It's happened countless times
before, and it will always be a sad option to those whose wrong-
doings get exposed. How about just do the right thing? Seems
easy enough to do.
Wasn’t it broads, booze, and bread?
Add #4 Bucks as in taking $ or over spending for toys.
I’ll second that. Boudreau is a slimy leech.
The old 012 district had a side cell in lockup that was used by some coppers who had pulled a double shift at Ira's.
You my friend are delusional.
BIA helping officers out, you gotta be kidding me!
Yes! Bring back the CPD baseball caps!
Do you think Command staff are going to hold your hand, sing kumbaya, and give you a shoulder to cry on?
It's good there's EAP but it's not great. You must talk to your friends and listen to your friends. A good sergeant can be a resource too (note, a good sgt). Ultimately, getting help begins with you wanting help and seeking it. If you don't want help, all the resources in the world will do nothing.
Who is the "good" command staff?
Funny but so true Booze and broads do it to you every time
Wasn’t always like that. Changed with the new department make up and all the special units, made up jobs and taking care of the girls. Years ago the majority were in patrol rotating shifts every 28 days. Not good but it did keep everybody closer. We were all in it together
yes bucks was also a huge problem
Men. This is the playbook: Do not get married wait until after you retire and by that point just find a life partner you enjoy being around. Marriage is set up for the man to lose so the best way to win is to not play. Also. Don’t have kids not worth it. Every dad will tell you that in private not worth it. Work some OT in a strategic way. Bank your money. Hit the gym 4 days a week. Have gym goals. Live under your means pretend you only make 50k a year. Have a reliable vehicle and a decent home. You don’t need 20 pairs of shoes don’t need 6 streaming services you don’t need to go on vacation 3x a year don’t need 4 designer watches. Get on TRT if you want to date keep it super chill nobody at work no man wants to date someone half his colleagues tagged. Avoid booze. Microdose psilocybin instead you’ll stay super functional eat well forget restaurants cook for yourself get a dog that’s low maintenance. That’s the recipe for success for a man these days. Consider a good Bible based church as well.
If you’re a retiree, long time or recent, don’t count on the CPD for ANYthing. All that family and brotherhood talk is 100% bullshit. I know of numerous retired guys and gals, and not a single one of them has ever heard a word from CPD as to their well-being. It’s all a fuckin lie, so if you need help, go see your pastor, helpful family members, buddies, VA Counselors etc. but not the useless CPD ..
Merit Appointments are simply payoffs for previous favors owed for all sorts of things both legal and illegal, as well as a crime of Theft from a rightfully qualified candidate. Make no mistake, “Merit Appointments” are Thefts from someone who deserved the promotions and played by the rules. CPD Merit Promotions are in reality, Criminal Acts, designed to circumvent the legal promotional procedures and law, that are coverups by Politicians and ranking CPD Personnel. Feds could stop or minimize but don’t. Why is that ? Hummm
