A follow-up report commissioned by Mayor Brandon Johnson lays out an array of revenue-generating options that includes a sales tax on virtually “all consumer services,” taxing high-volume electricity users at a higher rate, and imposing a congestion fee on “vehicles entering or exiting a designated central area during peak periods.”
To chip away at Chicago’s $36 billion pension crisis and erase the city’s structural deficit, the 23-member group of civic leaders is also suggesting offering retirees lump-sum payouts in lieu of monthly pension checks, consolidating actuaries and administrators of the four city employee pension funds, and restoring the automatic escalator locking in annual property tax increases at the rate of inflation.
Downtown is a ghost town compared to pre-plandemic numbers. Plywood storefronts are everywhere. Restaurants that used to serve the downtown workers are few and far between. Parking is a breeze.
Congestion is something that happens in a thriving metropolis....which Chicago isn't at the moment. Any sort of "congestion fee" will only make people avoid downtown even more so that usual. As will the increased sales taxes and electricity rates.
How about cutting something, like fully-staffed 90%-empty-schools?

• “Toll free in'73” …a promise by Illinois politicians. Anybody remember that slogan? JB Pritzker and Illinois Democrats are now guaranteeing that Illinois tollway roads will not be toll-free by 2073, either.
In fact, Illinois tolls will increase by 45 cents to $1.20 a toll starting on Jan 1, 2027… and then ‘automatically increase very year afterwards starting in 2029.’ By increasing tolls automatically, Democrats will avoid having to vote to approve the a new toll increase which is politically awkward and embarrassing (as it should be)
Commercial vehicles will see a 30% toll hike.
In July, the tollway Authority will hold public hearings each of the 12 counties the tollway serves, and in August the tollway board, appointed by Gov Pritzker, will rubber stamp the increase anyway. The decision has already been made, the public hearing is just a formality.

This Moron Mayor, who hopefully will be voted out this Tuesday, February 23rd, 2027, will be advocating for a ‘congestion fee’ during Chicago Bears games being held in Hammond, Indiana.
Amazing how this group of “civic leaders” didn’t find one group/program/etc to cut funding from in order to “chip away” at the deficit. It is also amusing that they are trying to create revenue. Govt doesn’t create revenue, they just tax the citizenry

If he had any brains, it would be so easy to save billions of dollars start closing these indoctrination centers where he’s getting millions of dollars from for his own personal campaign. Obviously, the schools need to be combined so many schools with a full staff and very few if any students buildings need to be sold, but then again we do not have a Ceo. Another giant company WeatherTech rumor was it was leaving this corruption filled state now it’s looking more and more likely that they are going. They employ a ton of employees in Bolingbrook and pay good wages. They can’t even stay here.
