Missed Gun....Again
This time in the 009 District lockup:
- an arrest by the Tact Team (who should have searched the arrestee on scene)
- transported to the station by either a cage car or a wagon (who should have searched the arrestee before accepting custody)
...was found to have a gun in his groin area by the lockup keeper.
Completely inexcusable.
Has Academy instruction gotten so bad that Officers are afraid to properly search an arrestee?

There is an officer at call back who has been stripped for years for doing good searches on offenders in custody. CR numbers being handed out left and right for pat downs. Supposedly change is coming as the gutless Command Staff has finally had enough of seeing a lack of or no searching at all of people with guns. The order will change without input from COPA. Only way you fix this is dedicated search room in every police building that a prisoner could possibly walk into.
In the dedicated search room a full search and wanding with metal detector is done under the supervision of a Sgt and the Sgt signs off on the search and the Sgt and searching officers are Documented on any and all reports.
Searching has been and still is a problem and weakness in the CPD.
The only way you fix it is to search under supervision and document who searched where and when.
Hope it fixes the sloppy police work and there wonât be a need to gig the person(s) who missed the weapon because no weapons will be missed with stringent searches.

Used to be guys on Tac had at least four years on the job. Thanks to bullshit like COPA no one with any time on wants the job so this is what you get. Short timers on Tac teams that learned the job from watching TV. They literally grew up watching these TV shows. No time on, very little street experience. Most descended from greatness, ie, ".. my pops is a Lieutenant and he wants me on a Tac team til I get promoted..". The boneheads who initiated the arrest that got the guy killed and the other nearly dead should both be thirty days pending. Transport guys should do at least 10/15 days. Lockup also. No word on any disciplinary status since the Tac guys previously mentioned are probably descended from greatness and a cover is being formulated for them to escape any serious discipline. The department is already calling the fuck up " a tragic accident " instead of what it is: TOTAL INCOMPETENCE.

Start with a 3 day suspension for the first time poor search. Then go to 5 days and then 10. Ill bet they start searching their prisoners real good. The A/O should get 5 days off the bat. 3 for a bad search, and 2 more for handing off a prisoner with a concealed deadly weapon.

This isn't Mayberry. I have witnessed many officers searching for tins of heroin vigorously while not searching waste bands or patting the chest for a gun on a string dangling on an arrestees neck.
We all know the academy is trash, including the new training. Sure you get to use sim rounds and do LEMART WOOO, but the tactics they teach and bs changes annually. I'm all for improvements, but the issue is that every year its overhauled and no one can actually refine last years skills or review them.
Officers, you put your own firearm, tasers, knives, etc in a lockbox before entering a lockup. Why must officers bring the offenders gun into a lockup, leave it unattended on a lockup metal desk to prepare an inventory report. Record the recovered firearm's info outside the lockup on a piece of paper instead of physically bringing someone else's firearm into the lockup. Use a lockbox outside the lockup to secure the bad guys weapon. The same goes with knifes. Think safety.
If you bring someone into the lockup with cuffs, DO NOT undo the handcuffs prior to conducting a thorough search in the lockup. Search and search for weapons that can hurt unarmed officers in the lockup. Bags of weed cannot kill but firearms, icepicks, boxcutters, utility knives, screwdrivers, metal hair picks , etc. can kill or severely injure our superhero Men and Women in Blue. And take immediate possession of phones. Your safety is paramount. No police experienced copa henchmen can say what they want under color of general orders, special orders, assorted policies can't bring you back when you are murdered or heal the serious injuries inflicted by a criminal. A criminal who regularly lies cheats and steals will take full advantage of one's naivety, sympathy or guilt. Look out for number one and your collogues first. Search, search search. Its better to be judged by a copa flunkey than be carried by six from the CPD Honor Detail. And don't feel offended if another officer searches your prisoner. Sometime we miss things and are often distracted which could end up in a tragedy.
Whatâs a suspension going to do? Suspension doesnât mean a goddam thing anyway. Please search everyone not out of fear of receiving a suspension but rather for your fellow officersâ safety! Even if you DGAF, think of your fellow officers..

I remember years ago I was working a DUI saturation patrol and I brought my prisoner to a southside lockup. I can't remember which district, but the lock up guy, an old black dude takes my prisoner and tells him to pull his pants down, including his drawers. I guess that was a thorough way to do the job.

I was informed that at the end of May 001st District Tact arrested a guy and processed him in the processing area in 001. After processing the prisoner they turned him over to Central Detention staff who found a loaded semi auto in his underwear. May have even had a switch on it.
Be careful out there boys and girls and take your time and do a thorough job when doing your searches.

Go to call back and see the officers who were doing their job and making sure things were safe. Now they enjoy waiting to go into a no pay status for years before finally having a hearing. Check every weapon to ensure it is unloaded. Search every prisoner to ensure he/she/it is unarmed.
When you pass a weapon to me, you will check it first, and then I will check it. When you pass a Prisoner to me, you WILL search, and I WILL search again.
And the SGT may search a third time.

Manny is a miserable fuck!! He just changed watch and is still disgruntled. Hates everybody, officers and the public walking in the building. No, itâs not the same retards everyday, heâs just an angry little guy. But but but, he was in a unit back in the day, blah blah blah.
