Officer Recovering

It appears he was wounded through a closed doorway and the bullet struck below his vest - one of the worst spots to get shot:
When officers approached the door, the man allegedly shot through it and struck a police officer.
The officer was shot in the lower abdomen and was taken to Illinois Masonic Hospital.
Twenty years ago or so, we remember seeing the HBT people (this was before SWAT) had a large ballistic shield - almost like a Kevlar curtain - that had to measure al least six feet by six feet square on a frame. It appeared to be mounted on a pipe frame for ease of movement.
This was in addition to the man-portable shields with a visual window to see through that covered from the top of the head to the knees, protecting the vital organ areas.
Were none of these available?
Prayers and best wishes to the wounded Officer for a full recovery.

He was breaching a door to perform a hostage rescue. Shield was positioned across his head and chest, dude shot through the door and hit his belly while he was swinging the ram.

I believe the situation warranted a dynamic entry since there were two people held hostage and the offender had already shot one person. The shield probably had to be moved out of the way to breach the door.

I cant help but wonder if complacency was key here. The old CPD blunt force entry was the norm for HBT and this injured officer was a long time SWAT team member. Was there not not enough training? Or not enough supervision?

I remember when the "old man" and " the senator" from 189 were shot through a closed door on a SW. The offender was found not guilty. Said he thgought he was getting robbed. Those officers were the last of a dying breed. Amazing time for CPD, not so much now.

Now let’s shift gears here, the officer is expected to make a full recovery which is absolutely wonderful. However, while on the road to make a full recovery he or she may endure several months of physical painful events, mental flashbacks and a host of other unforeseen problems which may lead to struggles to make yourself whole again. Let’s not forget the toll the officer’s injury has on his/her family. Keep all in your prayers.
Having access to something for use and training in it’s use are two very different animals.

My understanding is that he was in the process of emergency breaching the door. You can shield high, maybe shield low but rounds fired and hitting mid section is right where you’re swinging the ram.
Keep up the prayers for this injured officer along with Nelson C., who is still in the hospital from his gunshot wound that sadly took the life of his partner John B.

You realize police will be the shock troops for the eventual take over, right? You work for the government no matter who is in charge. You really gonna risk your paycheck to do what’s right, or you gonna abuse the rights of citizens to protect your livelihood? Critical thinking is a skill. You can't breach a door with a shield. They had shields, but the breacher, needs to be able to ram the door.

In search warrant training we were taught to position the shield in front of the door slightly above the handle and the breach officer stand to the side and hit the deadbolt
