The Chicago Police Department is investigating one of its sergeants after a video posted online shows him threatening to knock out a teenager’s father before apparently striking or knocking a phone from the hand of a girl who was recording the off-duty confrontation.
A CPD spokesperson confirmed Monday afternoon that an investigation is underway but said it has not yet been determined whether the matter will be handled by the department’s Bureau of Internal Affairs or the Civilian Office of Police Accountability, the city’s external police oversight agency.
Not a good look, but then these types of situations rarely look like anything professional or good.
There will be an investigation. It will take a while. More so if there are political sponsors involved in how someone got their spot.
If IAD investigates, long suspensions most likely.
If COPA, firing recommendations followed by appeals.
Lawsuit inbound - 100% guaranteed.
Whenever minors are involved, it never turns out good for the police:

- this incident
And when it's off-duty, it's usually worse, because you're supposed to be the adult in these situations, taking the place of the obvious failures of parents to raise and discipline their spawn properly.
But this one will be replayed for the foreseeable future since the media wore out all the Abbate footage a few years ago and haven't been able to make deep-fakes to replace the video tapes.

Give them a speedy investigation and outcome. We all have a duty to intervene per the Illinois Safety Act, if I were there he would have been locked up with his own handcuffs. I have never been promoted but love locking up bullies. Just an embarrassment to the profession. Something has to give and the bosses are the problem leading by bad example.
How can a supervisor be stripped. They can’t perform their primary duties. The whole place is a joke. Send him home while the investigation continues.

WOW! Vigilante justice is unacceptable! IAD isn’t going to do anything. Bring in a special prosecutor. It’s clear without legal authority he threatened to hurt everyone on the scene and a father of one of the children. There is enough evidence a little girl struck and hurt in the incident. That made him feel like a big man hurting her while filming his violent rage. His presence was very unsettling in that video. I felt very uneasy watching his very violent behavior. I believe there needs to be a warning on that video for viewers discretion advised for violence and strong language. The families are going to sue the department and him. His behavior does not represent the goals and values of the department. Has he been tested for steroid use. It seems to be a steroid fueled rage. Anger targeting the neighborhoods most vulnerable isn’t something an OFF DUTY SGT of police should be involved with. OFF DUTY means you shouldn’t be doing what you were doing. That fact that your family members were somehow involved means you are to close and to emotionally involved to be doing anything that wasn’t life threatening. I’ll bet he never even called the police in a timely manner. That call all be verified with his registered phone.
With four years on the job I can’t wait to see how this one ends. I’m seriously afraid to be near a Sgt who thinks muscles is the way to solve problems. Use your brains Sgt. We lost all respect for you. You might be the tough guy at home but you can’t do that crap out on the street or at home. You most likely will end up in divorce court. Those kids were causing issues and were known to be in the area. Video doesn’t look good but in also looking at if and when more video comes out of the entire incident. One of the yutes has been on FB stiring shit up acting like a banger. And one of them one of the individuals was in a park posing on swings above age 12, and another one with what appeared to be a shotgun in an alley whether it’s replica or not unknown. There simply is no excuse here. It’s all on video. A crime occurred here. If we responded to this incident and the offender was not the police, he’d be in cuffs and arrested. Why is the is not the case here? We are not above the law and deserve the public’s trust then the right thing to do is to arrest this idiot and let the legal system handle it. COPA and IAD should be secondary as we already know how slow of a process that involves. The public is 100% correct in that for his actions, this individual will continue to be paid while assigned to call back. The girl was too dumb to fake anything. These were scared and naïve kids. No deep fake. He will have to justify his actions and it will be a lot harder than you think. Especially when his money and livelihood is on the line. This is not BS with no consequences.

We’re seeing a portion of an incident, not necessarily what led up to it. The video doesn’t clearly show a punch, yet people are already predicting suspensions, termination and lawsuits as if every fact has been established.
Let IAD or COPA do what they’re supposed to do: review the complete video, statements, witnesses and circumstances from beginning to end. If the Sergeant was wrong, the investigation will establish that. If there’s important context missing, that matters too.
The disappointing part is watching people immediately eat their own. We should know better than anyone that a short video rarely tells the entire story. If it did the next time you bring in a TRR to the WOL maybe YOU should retain an attorney from the start.
