Trees Are Tough

From the CFD crash we posted about yesterday:

They were responding to a call, lights and sirens, when struck by a pick-up truck.

We would have thought the bumper would have held up better than that, but we suppose it did what it was supposed to do.

Now they'll get some beater reserve engine that was ready for the scrap yard. They'll get some hospital tape to number the doors.

I guess the city will be one less fire truck for a while now. BJ will be looking for the best scrap pricing

Stupid CFD policy: Firefighters are trained to put on their air tank BEFORE getting on the rig to go to a fire run. Therefore they can't put their seat belts on.
Fuck the fire. Protect yourself FIRST.

With Chicago’s luck it was brand new and on its first run. Now it will take 10 years to replace.
Hope the crew is ok, but utilizing their contractual medical benefits to the fullest.

It's not an exaggeration that this company will now be a in 20+ year old spare for at least a year, as the departments fleet of spare apparatus is literally in violation of federal law because a department of our size has to maintain a fleet of a certain amount of spares.

Remember the old Checker Marathon taxis with the big water-filled bumpers that had a row of blowout plugs along the top?

If no CFD or Private Citizen was killed or injured, this is not— say again, not— a big deal. Vehicles exist to protect Human Life, not the other way around.
