A socialist lawmaker in New York City has claimed “biological need” gives shoplifters the right to steal from store shelves.
State Assemblywoman Emily Gallagher, who describes herself as a “neighborhood organizer” and “democratic socialist,” made her comments on Thursday outside Manhattan Criminal Court, the New York Post reported Saturday.
She was joined by members of Court Watch NYC, which claimed they monitored hundreds of arraignments for several days and found half of those cases were misdemeanors.
Gallagher said:
Most of what we saw were crimes of poverty-people who are stealing things like toothpaste, people who were stealing things like, you know, soap. And that means if you’re stealing those things, you need them. And we are choosing to protect billion-dollar companies, like CVS and Walgreens, over the people who are struggling to get by. So I would say that the true crime is that there is such incredible wealth disparity in this city that there are people who can be thrown in jail simply for having a biological need.

When criminals steal the consumer’s pay more. When the cost becomes too high the merchant closes the store. All this idiotic dialogue is because the school system isn’t teaching what the people need to survive in the real world. They want to live in a made up fantasy world we you can live doing nothing and not contributing to civilization.
And I’m sure it will only get worse!! Maybe she should donate her money and time to the soup kitchen

Everyone needs to steal food from her just because they need it. She certainly can miss a few meals.

Went to Orland this weekend specifically to Dick’s and some of the retail stores. Had to leave. Teens stealing like it was a free for all. Told employee that a kid just stufffed two pair of new kicks into his backpack he looked at me like I was the criminal. Not just one race doing it. It’s a teen thing now.
I thought the taxes I pay towards EBT and WIC were supposed to pay for the same shit these clowns are stealing.

Ignores the criminal gangs that use homeless people turn the items into cash and drugs. Also ignores that the vast majority of businesses refuse to take actions against shoplifters and when it gets out of control just close
That would be a very compelling argument if it wasn't for one problem - people steal toothpaste and shampoo because they turn it over to other people who then resell it. They aren't stealing it because they want minty fresh breath - it's all about the secondary market. Odd that a well educated (to the extent you agree Ithaca College is a decent school) person would miss such an obvious point in their pursuit of a narrative......

Back in 1980 I arrested a guy for breaking into a car and stealing a tape deck.
When I searched his car after and incident to the arrest, as he tried to drive away, I found 2 or 3 more tape decks. Turned out these were stolen earlier in the month.
After Miranda I asked him why he did it.

Bingo ! All those essentials are taken and sold. Just like the link cards are sold every month. The money from the stolen essential items is used to buy narcotics. The money from the essentials sold from corner stores goes to organized crime rings. That money goes back over seas to fuel terrorism. The smarter corner store trades narcotics for the stolen essentials. Those investigations take a lot of time and work. Bosses don't like that. They need numbers. People are too worried about Data Centers and Flock cameras.

Or (gasp) to Catholic Charities, which gives away soap, laundry detergent, dish detergent, toothpaste and toothbrushes to any needy person who asks. I know - a religious organization isn't the state, so leftists can't worship their chosen idol if they support it.
I'd like to see some of the appliances in her house. I'm due for a new television set, a dish washer and a stand mixer. Maybe I should go to her house and see if she has what I need.

Yeah - when someone steals 1 or 2 bars of soap, then maybe it's because they need it at home. When they lift the entire end-cap, it's because they're selling it out of the back of their hoopdie.
EBT and WIC don't cover toiletries, but at least in Indiana, the city / county trustee's office offers vouchers for them, and several local charities also provide this stuff.
