A proposal to move the Chicago White Sox from Rate Field in Bridgeport to a new riverfront stadium in the South Loop is drawing mixed reactions from fans and elected officials as the team considers the concept as a potential future ballpark site.
Developer Canal Edge recently unveiled renderings for "The Railyards," a proposed mixed-use development near Roosevelt Road and Canal Street that would include a possible new home for the White Sox, along with residential, commercial and retail components and an outpatient care center for Northwestern Medicine.
The proposal remains in its early stages.
Someone had an opinion piece up that this would signal the end of Bridgeport.
We don't know about that, but the reason Wrigley Field does so well is there's somewhere to go before and after the games, namely the bar and restaurant scene.
One of the major reasons there Bears were looking to move is to build a large bar and restaurant scene within walking distance of the new stadium instead of a museum campus with zero amenities.
The Blackhawks are making semi-steady progress with their property on the west side as they price the undesirable elements out of the neighborhood. Give it another twenty years.
If the Sox stay in town.....

The United Center will always have public housing up. Westhaven (former Henry Horner Homes) and Oakley Square (former Saint Stephens) are still wild as El Rukn. Despite that, plenty of people have moved in thanks to the nearby amenities and proximity to the West Loop, Fulton Market, Downtown, etc. The proposed location for the Sox stadium has so much potential. Exciting for Chicago unless you live in Bridgeport.

Sox fans shouldn’t get too excited yet. The plan calls for moving the existing railyard to 35th st. That is going to require a lot of federal infrastructure work and that process alone is going to take several years even if the next owner pays for it. If this stadium is going to be built, it’s going to take at least 10 years. They’re better off going to Tinley or Ford City

Hope they move the Sox out of Bridgeport. Neighborhood will be fine and better off once they’re gone. It ain’t like they are spending money at neighborhood establishments. They tailgate in the parking lots. And the ones that at too cheap to pay to park in the lots, walk through our neighborhood like loud obnoxious children and piss everywhere and throw their garbage everywhere. Property in Bridgeport will continue to go up in value regardless of that stadium. We are too close to downtown. Good riddance to that team.

Hey numb nuts, the Bears have also pitched their stadium deal as being self financed……..BUT THEY STILL WANT TAXPAYERS TO FUND THE INFRASTRUCTURE. New water/sewer lines, new sidewalks, new streets, new lighting, new public transportation stop etc etc . What do you think the new White Sox owner is going to ask for???

Bridgeport will be better off if the team goes to Nashville. The team does nothing for the neighborhood. Also, the unruly fans, who also contribute nothing positive to the neighborhood, can go get high, vomit, piss, fight, and speed in Nashville, instead of doing so while walking and/or driving through Bridgeport. The team, fans, and park will not be missed at all.
ICE could meet half their quota just staking out the “church van” sweatshop worker buses & the Casino shuttles around Cermak & Wentworth. But no, for some mysterious reason you only hear about them picking up Mexicans & Venezuelans.

And when you need sidewalk/street/sewer repairs on your street do you pay for it yourself? Seems like the Bears aren’t being unreasonable, they cover the cost of a new stadium that’s going to create jobs, events, opportunities, but you want them to pay for the public street/sidewalk/sewer? Infrastructure that’s going to directly lead to benefiting the county too.
The Sox contribute plenty of OT to the state police officers who then pad the F out of their 80% pensions. Its a great gig to work a year before retirement!

Not totally disagreeing with ford city property, grew up there and worked there in high school......the property is a mile long and at least a half mile wide going back to the rail yard. For a city like Chicago that's alot of unused property. It's on both Pulaski and Cicero and I55 is like30 blocks down each. The hood is mostly Mexican now but so is most of the south side. I never thought of it as a stadium location but it wouldn't be bad at all..midway airport is a mile north and Cicero is all motels. There is a mile of current parking there as it sits. Sooooo it's really not as bad as some think. Me, I don't care, I'm trying to get out of illinois.
The neighborhood won't be fine. Look at the aerial view of the proposed new stadium, and you see that massive Amtrak maintenenace rail yard??? That's what'll be coming to Bridgeport if this stadium idea succeeds. I have zero ties to Bridgeport, but the residents there don't deserve to have a maintenance rail yard that operates 24 hours a day in their backyard, with locomotives running all through the night, for a new Sox stadium
The current location is already next to a highway + commuter rail and it still doesn’t get filled. Take away those 2 options away and you lose your fans that travel to a Sox game. If you’re an owner would you bet that your stadium is going to be filled by residents of West Lawn, Scottsdale, Gresham, Oak Lawn and 1-2 neighborhoods beyond? Half the southside is already Cubs fans. The parking situation is great, but the location not so much. Now if the Bears put a stadium there, people would come from all over and fill that stadium regardless of the terrible commute and surrounding area.

You are correct. In contrast look at Denver. 40 years ago They did the opposite as the Sox. Built a retro style stadium in the part of their downtown that was akin to South Loop in the 90s; meaning it was undeveloped & nondescript. Now? Coors field is the anchor of Denver’s LoDo district & the social scene remains vibrant, & has been ever since the late 90s. Meanwhile the Sox have struggled with attendance for the past 3 decades (minus the short lived Championship era).
