Application Deadline Extended

Anyone want to guess the number of applicants they've gotten that would require them to extend the deadline an extra 30 days?
  • The Chicago Police Department is extending the time period within which potential applicants may apply to join the police department.

    Applications are being accepted now through Sunday, January 16. A written exam will be administered the weekend of April 16, 2016 for those who applied.

    A special focus is being placed on encouraging more minority participation in the written exam and building diversity in police ranks. The city is also reaching out to military veterans and Chicago Public School graduates to ensure that a portion of recruit classes meet these criteria.
There seems to be no dearth of people who can tell us how to do the job, but not too many stepping up to actually do it. That would actually take some guts. But maybe it's for the better - how many unemployed liberal art majors could we possible hire?

Why any one would want to be a police officer in today's anti police climate is beyond me. Very dangerous times to be a cop. And then throw in the destruction of the pension by politicians makes taking this job unthinkable. Sad times

to divorce CPD from state training and education standards.

No minimum standards.
No drug screening.
No criminal background screening.
No more state certification.

Minimal firearms training.
No personal ownership
of firearms as a condition
of employment.

Every swing-dick running around downtown has plenty
Of opinions on how we should do this job.

Nary a swing-dick will step up and sign up to show us old
dinosaurs how to do it.

My kid ('15 college grad) told me he'd rather work at Home Depot until something opens up in his field and he can leave Chicago.

Reading, writing not required. Drug use, arrest record, no problem. Give them a representative police force. Test is for show only. Don't worry about being on time or even showing up at all. You want the job? You got it. You are entitled to it. Must be true, I heard it on tv.

All those ranks of people who have time in grade and age should leave ASAP.....get the last bit of free health care by 2017 and vanish. Enjoy the rest of your lives. Leave while you can....this is a rapidly sinking ship and it will only get worse.

Got hired during the 1980's we had 36,000 applications, now when no one with any credibility wants this job what does that tell you? simple question, maybe because your chances to be injured, sued, lose your freedom family, have to raise a family in this "once great city" living here for 30 years kids complete lives not a great deal!

The City of Chicago is also trying to bolster the minority numbers by including anybody that did not make it to the original exam in a military Make-up exam. This is UNBELIEVABLE. In the past, the city used to lock the doors at the time indicated on the ticket. Now, if you overslept and missed the exam, here's your chance. Read for yourself:
"The City of Chicago, Department of Human Resources (DHR), will be administering a make-up exam for the 2014 Chicago Firefighter/EMT examination. The make-up examinations are offered to military personnel who were on active duty during the original application period (7/16/14 – 9/16/14) or examination (12/13/14 & 12/14/14) as well as candidates who applied during the original application period (7/16/14 – 9/16/14) but could not attend the original examination due to:
religious restrictions,
medical/travel emergency,
or life event"

The all-encompassing "life event". The all night party the applicant chose to go to the day before the Examination that caused the applicant to oversleep could be considered a "Life Event". I've been told by exempt ranks that they have been told to overlook criminal convictions. Not criminal records they have overlooked in the past such as "unlawful use of alcohol by a minor, etc.", but Aggrivated Battery, felony drug distribution convictions, etc. Also, the age to be hired as a Firefighter in the City of Chicago has been lowered to 18 years old from 20 years old. Not because they want younger workers, but lowering the age gives the applicant less time to amass a serious adult criminal record. Certain groups of people steadfastly refused to change their culture, so now the CFD will have to change theirs so this group can be included. Read the city announcement for yourself:

I tell people all the time, go do something else!

Police work is not glamorous and not what it used to be!

It's a shitty job, filled with hate filled anti-police public, bad hours, cronyism, nepotism and favoritism for the chosen, lest you wind up on a beat car for 30 years!

Not to mention this area sucks, high taxes, high cost of living, and bad weather!

Why in the hell, would you want to continue to live in this shithole of a city and state!

I was born and raised here and yet I can't wait to leave for good!

One of our officers left our dept a couple months ago to go to the academy. The officer came back last week to visit and the issue of the "increased minority hiring" came up. The officer is black and said the CPD brass in the academy took the officer and the other black classmates aside one by one for a sit down to ask them how they can reach out to and hire more minorities.

Not how can we hire the best candidates for the job, but how to hire more minorities. That is what CPD is currently concerned about. Not hiring the best candidates makes it unsafe for everyone. Affirmative action at it's finest.

If my kid goes to private religious school he/she is penalized on the police test. (cps graduates get extra points). Sounds like religious discrimination to me.
