Copper Injured in Fire
- Five people were injured in a fire that broke out Saturday afternoon in a bedroom on the 50th floor of the John Hancock Center, officials said.
None of the injuries was considered serious, officials said at a late-afternoon news conference. One person was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital. One of the injured was a police officer who suffered smoke inhalation.
The cause of the fire has not been determined, officials said.
A high-rise fire has to be one of the more challenging events for CFD to respond to, but it all seemed to run smoothly from the coverage we heard/saw. Best wishes to the injured for a speedy recovery.

Stay safeĀ out there. And may God bless you for the work you and the Fire Fighters do. - Not a Cop
Good luck Officer.
While not yet confirmed, the injured "Sergeant" had some complications which caused him to be transferred for further medical treatment.
My best wishes for a complete and speedy recovery as well.
Let the firemen who work one and off two fight fires. You don't see firemen chasing criminals down dark alleys and gangways. Remember the cemetery is filled with dead hero's. Go home to your family at the end of your tour.
Wishing a speedy recovery to the officer. Thank you for your service.
I heard there aren't sprinklers on the upper floors? Yikes.

Fire on the 50th floor of the Chicago John Hancock Skyscraper
Here was True News USA's concern with this fire....
Although it appears this was not a terror related incident NOW....
It occurred while Magnificent Mile Lights Festival Parade was in progress.
Police and fire rushed to the floor of the fire...
Had terrorists set this fire in order to draw 1st responders to it...
and then had lots of explosives a few floors below this fire...
And they waited for all these first responders to be on the fire floor before setting off the explosives...
Chicago would have lost a lot of POLICE & FIREFIGHTERS...
While hundred of thousands parade spectators looked on.....
I have to wonder if any of the Chicago police or fire department bosses gave this any thought? True News makes a very good point.
Fifty flights of stairs! Not only should this officer receive a Lifesaving award but also a Physical Fitness Ribbon with oak clusters. I do that stair stepping machine and after 20 floors I'm exhausted. Glad to hear the officer will recover and lives that matter were saved. Kind of stole the thunder from the other heroes who drag hoses, blow air horns excessively and adorn flame retardant reflective rubber trench coats. Good job office!
Great job by all, wishing quick recovery, high rise fires are tough, totally different skillset we have no matter the naysayers the best police & Fire department in this country!
The copper involved in the shooting of Laquan McDonald will be charged on Monday. Please pray for the officer and his family. Also people on social media are circulating pictures of the officer on social media.
Police are not fire fighters. Ifor fire is on scene let them do a job that they are trained for.

Well, except for the fact the fire was accidental and it occurred many hours before the festival was set to begin, the scenario could be valid. Let's hope True-whatever didn't give some terrorist the idea to do something like that.

The Sgt is a Great Guy, I saw him save a suicidal person 10 years ago, Get well soon.
10:09am. Well said.
Who has command at the scene of fire? Fire departtment! Sergeant should know better to make it any more difficult for Fire to begin their search and rescue! Stay out! Don't be a fool!

To the above and others comments like the above - wtf with the negative 'let's do nothing and just be lazy cpd' comments??? I was not at the fire, but I would bet the police arrived on the scene first. It's a good police officers natural reaction to go into danger and start banging on doors to make sure people get out before the fire spreads. It sounds like once CFD arrived and the smoke was so bad, this particular officer got out and let CFD carry on their duties. Kudos to him!
OT - CHIRAQ premier is tonight downtown. I am sure that will be a fun fest.
They really pumped it up on WGN-TV.
I don't think many are going to go rush to see it. Well, maybe those who were in it as extras?
All the Comments that we're not Firemen and So and So,We knock on doors make noise and help people out of burning buildings....
I know the fire officer who cautioned the cops not to go up there, we wear SCBA air packs so we can breathe in toxic environments, please listen to us in situations like this. That said good luck to the cop.
Stay safe,
Firefighter

11/22/2015 09:34:00 PM And we're not paramedics either, but sometimes we have to make a decision based on whats happening NOW. Ever been on a scene and waited 5 minutes for fire or EMS? It happens. A lot. The Sgt involved isn't some new kid looking for a ribbon. He's a good guy who knows his job and made a decision. Hoping for a full recovery.
High rise fires are crazy, never know what floor the smoke can be on..no air pack,be careful.
I work with this SGT and he is a Hero, Ive seen him work,Saving a Life is the most rewarding thing you can do,Im not saying to run in a burning building thats all up to you Its a big risk.

I wish you guys always got there first. A lot of times you do. But sometimes you don't and a real copper, just like a real fireman HAS to go in despite the risk to themselves. It's why most of us (I hope) came on our jobs.
I am going to retire soon and I, like so many before me, will miss all of it like crazy. We GET to be the good guy, We GET to catch the bad guy. We GET to save a life. We GET to make someone's life better each and every day. What a gift I was given to be able to do this job.
From your measured response I can tell you are one of the good guys. I wish you well and let us pray that there are enough with that same calling to keep us all safe.
fire has command of scene.yes.coppers on-view or arrive 1st.yes.not trying to honk our own horn, but as my old man who was CFD told me "Coppers made more saves than we did".so tell me, in the dozen or so instances, that we have encountered, we should have stood by and take no action? fuck that. and btw...no green ribbons involved.
SCC, I have a question, or maybe a request. I have read the blog almost since its inception. During that time there have been multiple superintendants, most of whom have been hated or at a minimum disparaged by the majority of your respondents. I'd like to know who the readers here would like to see get the job. I'd like to read some thoughtful and articulable reasons why a particular reader might want a certain person to be in charge. Let's have a thoughtful reasonable discussion. Maybe there should be some criteria established. The new boss should be able to:
1. Make everyone on the job happy by putting them in the watch they want, or in the unit that they want.
2. Be allowed to hire as many people as he/she wants even though there is no money to do so.
3. Be able to upgrade equipment even though there is no money to do so.
4. He/she must be able to solve, through some magical means, the violence problem in our city, a problem that has nothing to
do with missions, boxes, number of officers, deployment or a cop on every street because the violence is not a law enforcement problem, it is a family, neighborhood and lack of self respect problem.
5. And finally he/she had to be able to keep politicians, special interest groups, religious leaders and the media and all of the agendas attached to these groups happy.
There's more he/she should do, but I'll stop there. Let's hear some possible names!
Seiser for Super!
Risking severe injury to yourself by entering a fire is STUPID, firefighters have equipment for a reason. If a ff is injured/killed not wearing his protective breathing apparatus, they face the same discipline we face if not wearing a vest or seatbelt!!! Instead of banging on doors, use your damn sirens and lights!!! Furthermore, you can get in the way of the ffs who are trained and paid to handle fires. Best wishes to the injured Sgt though. One more thing, if you are approached at a fire scene by "distraught" persons who tell you there are children still inside, have them escort you to where said children are if you really feel the need to go inside a fire!!! The highest ranking firefighter is in charge at a fire, ask a certain lt. about her 30 day suspension for blowing off a order from a battalion chief at a fire. Classic true story.
10:01pm, I would love to see Glenn Evans as the supt.!!! I am serious!!!
Actually, this officer severely impeded the efforts of Cfd. Since the officer became lost and unresponsive on the fire floor the first arriving Cfd companies treated this as a mayday situation and the first truck company entered a hallway both heavily charged with smoke and rapidly deteriorating fire conditions. All without a hose line putting themselves at great personal risk. The officer was found on the floor very near to the fire apartment, as the officer was being removed the apartment door failed and fire burned into the hallway. Mere seconds more and this would have certainly been a line of duty death. Kudos to truck 3 and squad 1 for getting our guy out. It's one thing to knock on doors and warn people to get out. But exercise extreme judgement when operating on the same floor as the fire or a floor above.
