No Brakes!

CFD is short working equipment and their pool rides are as bad as ours:

These things weigh between ten and twenty tons including a full water tank. That's a lot of momentum with zero brakes to be flying around city streets.

This is the result of the CFD maintenance shops being incorporated into the department of fleet management This type of incident NEVER occurred when the CFD had control of their own shops. Same is true of the CPD motor maintenance division. The focus at fleet management is the snow plows and garbage trucks and fuck the CPD, CFD rolling stock.

Who cares about the CFD. Look at CPDs crap ass equipment. What happens to all the grant money the CPD is awarded? Take a deep dive into that and I am sure you’ll see the money not being applied to what it was won for.

How about the $300,000+ Marine unit dive truck that took 3 1/2 years to build. It has been in the shop twice since it arrived. Once for leaks through the roof and now for oil leaks. It has been here for 6 months and has spent 4+ in the Shop and currently still there. Additionally there is a million plus boat that has sat in dry dock for 3 years and another that was suppose to be refurbished but 2FM waited so long and kept fucking up that they lost the $800,000 grant that was awarded to refurbish it. Money gone.

Thank god I retired and don’t have to deal with that nonsense anymore.

If this was a private truck without a valid inspection sticker and faulty brakes, the owner operator would receive thousands of dollars of fines and be put on notice for an expensive mechanical inspections of the fleet. And once the insurance company got hold of this information, expect insurance premiums to skyrocket. I'm grateful the City of Chicago can skirt the vehicle safety laws written by government for the little guys.

CFD sounds like a rouge organization. Time to put the organization under a federal Consent Decree Monitor. Appoint a federal judge, some slick U.S. prosecuting attorneys and a gaggle of federal fire marshals to oversee the day to day operations. The overseers can find things wrong, publish it in their annual report justifying the need for more regulations, more unnecessary oversight strangling common sense life saving day to day operations. Powers granted to an unwarranted bureaucracy with its potential revenue streams for each monitor is priority #1 for this out of control municipal agency and public safety comes second in a ranked order for the public.

Put the Fire Commissioner under oath and affirmation in a City Council hearing to unmask the root causes of dilapidated fire apparatuses and identify responsible apparatchiks. Assemble the city's Elders or council members in a blue ribbon panel to investigate this matter complete with future employment referrals from each ward. Appoint a special counsel or connected law firm to investigate broken down fire rides, provide a comprehensive report on tire inflation and review air horn blowing policies complete with Venn Diaphragms in 12 months.

Aren't the air brakes on that designed to apply (stop the thing) on failed air? Trains and heavy equipment work like that, won't move until air is pumped up, they grind to a stop the air is lost. Helps with idyit-proofing, since pumping the brakes (that depletes the air, unlike on a hydraulic braked car or light truck) won't disable all braking.

Los Angeles has the highest tax rates in the country. Their democrat leadership compromised public safety with broken down trucks and dry fire hydrants despite being a stone's throw away from an enormous body of water, the Pacific Ocean.
Chicago too is taxed in oblivion too. Your telling me that we cannot afford or have raised awareness of an aging fleet of first responder chariots. Where is the fire leadership? No one has figured this out. Lots of money devoted to other than Americans but not for critical fire equipment.

Here's a little secret I learned from my time as a sergeant: the 06 sergeant isn't randomly deciding to hold cars down on burglary missions. They were instructed to do so by a lieutenant, most likely at the direction of the commander, most likely because there is a burglary problem in the district. That's probably the whole reason there's even an 06 sergeant to begin with. Hope this helps.
