RIP CFD Captain Meyer
After nearly 30 years with the Chicago Fire Department, Capt. David Meyer died “doing what he loved to do” Wednesday morning after a roofing beam fell on him during a garage blaze in Austin on the West Side, an emotional fire commissioner told reporters.
[...] Chicago Fire Fighters Union Local 2 said Meyer, 54, joined the department in October 1996. “He was a loyal member doing his job ... a dangerous job,” Patrick Cleary, president of Local 2, told the Chicago Sun-Times. “Our condolences to his family and co-workers.”
Larry Langford, fire department spokesman, said he was assigned to Truck 29 located the station at 3509 S. Lowe. “It’s a sad day for CFD and Chicago,” Langford posted on X
Just after 4 a.m., Meyer was among those who responded to a garage fire in the 5500 block of West Crystal Street when the garage collapsed, [...]. “It had to be a roofing beam, there’s nothing there except a few cross beams in the roof, so something got him from above,” Langford said.
It's been over a year since a Firefighter died in the Line of Duty and a reminder that even what appears to be routine can turn tragic in an instant.
Deepest sympathies to his family, friends and co-workers.

Deepest sympathy, R.I.P.
But I gotta ask, I was out west many years, I NEVER saw a Bridgeport truck out west.
We gotta be dangerously short....any thoughts?
Chicago Fire Department Truck 29 is at the 441 N. Waller and Engine 29 is at 3510 S. Lowe. A truck has the ladders and the engine has the hoses.
My condolences to all his co-workers, friends and family. My heart goes out to you all.

My prayers and condolences to the family who lost a husband and father. My heart goes out to you. Chicago lost a hero and hard working guy.
Deepest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Captain Meyer.
I won’t pretend to know the logistics and nuances of dispatching fire apparatus, but why were resources sent from that far away? Is this part and parcel to the lack of serviceable equipment and/or manpower? Did CFD robbing Peter to pay Paul contribute to this tragedy?
Just a horrible situation regardless of how you slice it. RIP, Sir.
Truck 29 at 439 n Waller— lake & Waller in Austin
Truck 29 is quartered at approx. Lake & Waller on the west side. They are the "home guard" for the alleged mayor's alleged domicile. It was apparently the beam that serves as a lintel over the garage door on a brick alley garage that collapsed on him.
RIP Capt. Meyer
It is always sad to hear about a death in the line of duty.
Another painful loss.
May family, friends & all of who know the worth of this good man find comfort
Engine 29 is located on lowe street. Not truck 29.
AI article with misinformation or some lazy out of town author who didn't bother to do two minutes of homework. The captain was not assigned to CFD Engine 29 (35th and Lowe) but rather Truck Company 29 (439 N. Waller - by Lake and Central on the west side). Whoever fact-checked the article really thinks a CFD company from Bridgeport was fighting a garage fire in the Austin area?
I really hope that's a misprint and not an actual quote from Langsford because Truck 29 is located at 439 N. Waller with Engine 96. Truck 29 is one of the busiest trucks in the city. Engine 29 is a retirement spot. That's a huge difference. God Speed Captain!
R.I.P. Thirty years on the job and still fighting fires as a Captain.
R.I.P. Captain Meyer... Godspeed...
Larry Langford couldn’t find his ass with a map and GPS.
Truck 29 is at Engine 96’s house on Waller.
Engine 29 is on Lowe in Bridgeport, DEI doofus!
3-3-5, Cap.
I don't want to try and act like I understand fire science or the CFD protocols, but I can't understand how it happened; were they inside the garage when the beam came down? or did it crash down and out towards them? It's an absolute tragedy to die putting out a fire in an empty garage. My heart bleeds for his family and coworkers, we bust balls, but we are united as first responders, and his tragic death is really hitting hard.
May God bless him and welcome him.
Captain Meyer,
Rest in Peace our brother First Responder.
Thank you for your countless acts of bravery, dedication and sacrifice over your many years of service to the City of Chicago and the CFD.
The discrepancy on the address and place of assignment was due to media affairs Larry Langford who IS an idiot and always has been an idiot and always will be an idiot....
another dei fire spokesman my advice get your engines n truck numbers right it is not that difficult
i hope the family tells that racist hater conehead not to atttend
My apologies, I saw a news report that the truck pulled out of 35th & Lowe. Saw today it was the house at Lake & Waller.
Rip Dave Meyer. Norwood park guy. Built lots of cops and firefighters homes on the NW side . Hell of a firefighter. Even better man. Led by example as a leader should.. May he rest in peace
Rip sir. But it’s an empty garage fire with nothing but rats and roaches. Property damage in the ghetto. They dont care. Rip but senseless death.
Danger exists.
We minimize it through Training and Discipline and Equipment.
We minimize Danger but cannot eliminate it. The Danger that still remains, the Danger that is still there, we accept because it is our DUTY.
And made point between engine and truck number here guys. Misprint. We get the point. Take a chill pill and that’s not the point. Oh Lord. Back to the bunk house. Let garage collapse. Senseless death.
That is why they call it an accident.High risk jobs have more accidents.
CFD dont have a problem with the mayor. Just cops.
The danger of the lintel failure, that is the metal beam that holds up layers of bricks over the door in residential garages, is a well known danger. What this brave man didn't know was the condition of the alley wall. You can see it on google earth.
I'm sorry... let a ghetto burn.. He lost his life for that? I can't believe that fire fighters have to enter shithole structure where there is no lives to save..
Steel lintel over the garage door expanded with the heat and loosened the masonry holding it up
Rest in heavenly peace. God bless your family!
CFD just had a mandatory online training in January about the importance of entering every garage fire to search for victims
Don't go to the wake or funeral. POS. Hope you live a week after retirement. Gfys
Yo-yo strikes again.
One of her staff members had a few too many at her promotional party tonight and got a little loose with some gossip. I was an ear shot away. claims that yo-yo wants to get rid of the honor guard because they just dumped (about too?) dump a clouted member. Yo-yo tried to intervene and got her ass handed too her by snelling and now she wants payback. Apparently snelling told yo-yo to sit her ass down and drop it but you know how these entitled merit hacks are. This staffer was talking a whole lot of shit for someone so connected. Of all the battles she wants to pick on her first month, she attacks the honor guard? Talk about tasteless b!*h!
I’m not in the loop on all of it, but if someone was removed, trust there was a reason. From what I’ve been told about the honor guard they don’t make those calls lightly, and it’s reassuring to know the Superintendent backed the team when it mattered. For the honor guard it appears integrity over clout every time.
Larry, get your nose out of the bottle and look up where Truck 29 is located.
Hey 10:30:18
You are also a piece of sh!t for wishing that on someone who served that city.
She’s the face of the honor guard! Just ask her she’ll tell ya!
I can attest, she was over served. Loose lips sink ships.
That’s because they has Snelling behind them which was the right move
No, we DO have a problem with the mayor. His refusal to even negotiate in good faith with us is the reason
