Economic Growth Continues

Despite all reports from the main stream media and the democratic national committee, economic growth continued and economists are predicting a strong 3.6% growth in the American economy for 2005 and a 3.3% increase in 2006. Unemployment, already at 5.5% is predicted to drop to 5.1% for 2005 and to 5% in 2006. Last quarter marked something like a dozen or thirteen straight quaters of growth. That's 3 plus years lefty. During a war. And hurricanes. And high gas prices. Today's economy is trucking along and shows few signs of slowing.

How come, teacher you always call me out and not Shady? No mind, I'll gladly answer your query.

The president, I mean YOUR president, can account for part of that growth in programs for the poor which have been cut. He now proposes to cut $50 billion in aid to the poor.

Riddle me this, Batman. What will the national debt be when this fan of the ultra-rich leaves office? I pity the poor Democrat or Republican (hold my nose), or even Ralph Nader, who takes over from Dubba. They shall have to make hard decisions and correct the sins of this man.

The cost of rebuilding from the hurricane season hasn't even begun. Answer that one in a few years.

The economy is trucking along, as you put it, at the expense of the working class that carry the burden of the country.

You were right about one thing though SCC, high gas prices. The highest gas prices in the history of the country. If Hillary had been in office this year with these high prices the GOP would have her to the cross.

Nevertheless, SCC, I still hope you and the family have a nice Thanksgiving. I wish the same to all here, even those who hate me. Maybe I'll see some of you Thanksgiving morning as we help those less fortunate.

Is every issue left v. right? Any fair analysis of the economy during President Bush’s administration would say the economy has remained stable. The numbers sighted in your post indicate the positives in our economy. And we should be grateful to this administration in their careful stewardship. The problem with the administration is the issues that are not being addressed. First, it is irresponsible to ask our military to be sacrificing life and limb over a national policy decision to go to war, and not ask the nation to make any sacrifice. If we send our military to war, we need to pay for it. We need to share in the sacrifice. We have hurricanes that have ravaged a large part of our country, and this administration and Congress have committed to rebuild. Again, a commitment and send the bill to the national credit card. The budget deficit is the largest it has ever been in our history. The employee benefits crisis has been ignored by the administration and the Congress. Health care provided as an employee benefit has put large corporations and state and municipal governments in a funding crisis. Any home, business, or government can feel good about itself by borrowing to pay its everyday bills. But we all know the day will come when the bills come due. We desperately need to change debate in our society. We have to stop left vs. right. We need to recognize our problems and gather the best ideas from citizens from any side of our political equation.

Yes, there are abuses in SSI, but I'd rather give money to deserving poor than to Halliburton.

Finally....while driving today I tuned into Rush, I cannot stomach him for more than 15 minutes at a time, but here's what he said. He spoke of being in a golf tourney down in Mexico last week. His compadres complained to him $200,000 per year in not enough to live on. When will you guys realize Rush is not for the working man.

I thought this thread was about the Bush Administration's handling of the economy. I suggest that if we eliminate section 8 and SSI for the unworthy we would still have the problems that we are ingnoring. The last line of defense in arguing over economic matters is assistance to the poor and the undeserving. I agree cut these programs, they only continue to feed a dependant class. That said, how do we pay for a war, a hurricane, and the employee benefit crisis?

One of the reasons, I think, that "broken borders" comes out so high on Lou Dobbs' survey, is that the borders issue is so high on his personal agenda, and he repeats it almost every chance he gets. It may or may not be an important issue "nationwide" (not discounting Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas, mind you), but who the hell cares what Lou Dobbs thinks? His opinion counts for ONE...just like Daley, Stroger, Kerry, Cline, Obama, Clinton, Bush, etc......

7:13 is correct. There is no plan. Neither political party has come up with a plan to pay for the war, to pay for hurricane relief, to reduce our deficit. Both sides have come up with excellent debating points on where the other side lacks. According to the right the left are skirt wearing cowards who secretly hate America, want to eliminate the defense budget to pay for more welfare programs. According to the left the right are crazy war mongering racists. When will this end? If we could ever get rational debate on public policy we may come to reasonable solutions. All the big issues of our time deserve better than a tired left vs. right debate.

FOLLOW-UP: "The Green River Killer"

A hiker just found a human skull in a heavily wooded area near the Green River. It was apparently "relocated" by foraging animals. Dental records identified it as the skull of Tracy Winston, then 19, last seen on the SeaTac "ho stroll" over 22 years ago. Gary Leon Ridgway, the most prolific known serial murderer in U.S. history, is currently serving just 48 consecutive life sentences at the Washington State Penitentiary at Walla Walla. As you may recall, Ridgway already "cut a deal" with prosecutors to escape the needle.

In Chicago, when it comes to CHA tenants going to traditional housing, it is not Section 8. That is a generic term for government funded housing. The proper term is CHAC. The Chicago Housing Authority's Housing Choice Voucher Program or CHAC. A private corporation oversees government funds while placing former CHA Tenants into traditional rental properties in each and every neighborhood. It is in essence a new model for public housing in Chicago and nationwide. It is another social experiment done by Democrats in the waning days of the Clinton presidency.

Read for yourself. www.chacinc.com

The tenants are trained on Chicago's Landlord Tenant Ordinance (A city ordinance set up in the tenants favor I may add.) and how to screw the landlord at each and every turn. I've been through the CHAC Tenant training and couldn't believe my ears.
Part of this new style of public housing also creats homeownership possibilities for the former CHA tenant. In essence if you become part of their 5 year program, and save a little bit of money, CHAC will help you buy a house. CHAC will supplement your downpayment, get you a competitive mortgage, and negotiate the deal for you. Don't worry about making the payments either. Those are supplemented by CHAC as well.

Now Lefty, tell me again how the middle class is getting screwed by the rich republicans.

Sorry to go off topic but I just saw on the news that that asshole railroad cop who shot those two TRU coppers in ten about nine months ago just got bailed out. Turns out an anonymous citizen "heard the cries and felt the pain" of the suspect's family, so he/she put up almost $200,000 so he could be home for the holidays. What about the two coppers who got shot? I guess their and their families feelings don't count. To the person who put up the bail for the attempted cop killer, I hope someone you love gets shot and have to live through a painful recovery. I'll personally rally to get the bail money for the shooter. Happy holidays, Asshole.

You walked into another one Lefty - when adjusted for inflation, gas prices are lower now than they were in 1980 at the end of the Carter administration. Go figure that one out. And gas prices are falling - down over 25 cents a gallon in the past two weeks and oil per barrel is down to it's lowest in 4 months and dropping. AND the economy still chugs along.

11/23/2005 12:42:00 AM

Wow, SCC, gas prices are down 25 cents, after they hit the highest in the history of this country. Do we have the president to thank for that? I doubt it. We can however thank him for allowing the oil industry to do almost anything that want without interference.

Also, the inflation index used today is NOT the same as used during the Carter administration. Do you actually think your family's income is going farther than when you were raised by your parents? Come on, think about it.

To 7:13 poster:

I think the Democrats care more about the working man than the GOP, but just about all politicians are in it for what they can benefit. It's all class warfare, man, and until the working class realizes this the USA shall continue to be operated by the ultra rich that control almost everything.

Lefty I think you completely missed my point. I do agree with you that this a class war. A war of the "haves" and "have nots" so to say. The haves in this case are getting everything handed to them. They can in effect get 15 years of mortgage payments made for them by taking on a $5/hour full-time job.( http://www.chacinc.com/home-ownership.asp ) Not much else is expected of the people in these programs. No expectations needed for folks who contribute nothing but yet receive a majority of the services.

In the meantime, middle class folks such as myself need to supplement our incomes by taking on second and sometimes even third jobs just to make ends meet or pay a college education for our children.

Who pays for these programs? The middle class, plain and simple. Not the uber rich or the poor. It's you and I footing the bill for another FDR-like social experiment gone overboard.

The things I keep asking myself are "Why didn't anyone kiss me?" and Where's my reach-around?" It's the least that could have been done.

Two politicians are walking down the street. One Democrat, one Republican. A "residentially challenged American" approaches them and asks for money. The Republican looks at the person and asks questions concerning his condition, then proceeds to take money out of his own pocket and gives it to the person. The Democrat sees this, bites his lower lip, and tells the person he feels their pain. The Democrat then reaches into the Republicans pocket and gives that person the rest.

As a few truly enlightened bloggers stated, neither side has done shit for us and won't. Why??? They don't want to. They have set up cushions for themselves and will sell us out to the best offer when the time comes. That is both sides, not one or the other. They can bash the shit out of each other but not tell us what they've done.

Its funny that people on this blog will blast each other and every boss and unit in the dept. Wheres's the vicious bashing of the Coward Cheney!!! Arrogant Ass Rumsfeld!! Manchurian Pres Bush!!! Communist Hillary!!! Eyes closed to white collar crime and player Bill Clinton!!! I'm for the poor but I own 10% of the country Kerry!!!The list goes on and on.

We truly deserve each other on this dept. How can anybody stick up for any these assholes??? We should all be appalled that GM is laying off 30,000 workers!! I can guarentee after the dust settles the adiministrative talent will get nice bonuses for fuck a job well done to the common man. No kiss, no lube, no protection.

Now, go cry that the FOP has done nothing and we didn't get a big enough raise (I know people who haven't gotten a raise in 5 years). We pay to much for health care(we pay nothing compared to the private sector). I did't get my free coffee and newspaper and they gave me a job out of rollcall.

The GM workers losing their jobs won't be crying about working to hard anymore. They will be begging to work harder to keep their jobs!!! Something every copper should be thinking about. The left and right pals that your sticking up for won't be thinking about it. They will be hoping the stock they have in GM goes up after this.

To the 0230 poster, I have a contract book in front of me as i've had one since the inception of the FOP as our bargaining agent. It's the weakest piece of shit we have ever had. We lost ground on every contract since the first one (ok the second one). The original contract was strong. Whenever a grievance came up, we won almost every one bacause the city did'nt have a clue about contract language. This was the contract that Marv Gittler wrote (a professional that we hired). On the second (or third) contract, the FOP did not want to spend the money for a professional (they thought they could do it better thenselves) and we suffered. By then the city was getting better lawyers to write their proposals, and we were slowly giving up small points to benefit the majority of the union. The first contract was adopted in August 1981. Read that one, then read the new one and you'll find loads of stuff that has disappeared. So mister know it all, BLOW it out your ASS.

Hey 1;48,

I'm calling it the way it is. When this program was initiated in 99' it was signed into law by Pres. Cumstain. The funding is there until 2010 at the least.
Let's say that Bush was to stop these pork programs designed to enslave the urban poor. You and your liberal guilted ilk would be crying foul and stating the "Bush hates blacks" line for eternity.

Live with the fact that Bill Cinton did more damage to the middle class than FDR, Johnson and Carter combined. Over taxing the working man to pay for failed social programs that only benefitted the private contractor.
Thank them all for the social security fiasco. The most easily abused program in governmental history.
Thank them for the housing projects that kept the poor in prison like conditions for the last half century creating the current mind set of our urban poor.
Thank them for the crumbling infrastructure of our highways and public spaces.
Thank them for double digit inflation, double digit unemployment, the loss of the American steel industry, the weakened American Labor Unions and countless other overspent, overtaxed abuses heaped upon the backs of the middle class working man.

The only thing I ever got from a Democrat was a bill for getting screwed.

So Clinton invented all of Sec 8 from it's beginings? Don't be so foolish.

The Republicans (WH, Cong, now SCt) have had at most 4 years to do away with it. They will have 8 total (more when Jeb runs) to kill it. They have the votes in the Cong. They can do it. Yet they have not and they will not. So who's worse? Clinton for "inventing" it, or the Repubs, who know it's wrong and continue to let it happen.

I've never even heard the words "welfare reform" come out of the neocon's mouths in the last 4 years! Shame on them! You can blame Clinton for what happened, but we can only blame Bush for what's going on now.

Seeing the shit I see on the street I cannot be a liberal.

JOE: That's mine, too.

ME: So you have $300, right?

JOE: Ya.

ME: So you don't need the LINK card then, huh?

JOE: Sure I do. They put money on there!

There you have it. The sense of entitlement. You want to blame Clinton for everything, fine, ok. I'll help you.

CLINTON!!CLINTON!!CLINTON!!CLINTON!!CLINTON!!CLINTON!!CLINTON!!CLINTON!!CLINTON!!CLINTON!!CLINTON!!CLINTON!!

Ok, are we done yet?

But where is Bush? He should be cutting this BS off. The Repub Cong should be passing through new bills. The Conserv SCt should rule all of CLINTON!!'s crap unconstitutional. But they aren't.

Working Class Hero
by John Lennon
As soon as you're born they make you feel small
By giving you no time instead of it all
Till the pain is so big you feel nothing at all
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be

They hurt you at home and they hit you at school
They hate you if you're clever and they despise a fool
Till you're so fucking crazy you can't follow their rules
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be

When they've tortured and scared you for twenty odd years
Then they expect you to pick a career
When you can't really function you're so full of fear
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be

Keep you doped with religion and sex and TV
And you think you're so clever and class less and free
But you're still fucking peasants as far as I can see
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be

There's room at the top they are telling you still
But first you must learn how to smile as you kill
If you want to be like the folks on the hill
A working class hero is something to be

To the poster who told me to blow it out my ass, get a clue. Go to the closest office building in your neighborhood and ask the employees how much they pay for health insurance each month? When they say $300 dollars or more just for themself and not the rest of the family, then tell me who knows it all.

Next go to a police dept that doesn't have the FOP as their bargaining unit. See how their grievance procedure works. I know how it works as I have friends in depts without FOP. U either take the suspension thats given to you or take 30 days for daring to stand up to the chief of police in that town.

U r correct that we lose something in each contract. U r correct that we pay enough union dues to always have a professional negotiate our contract. That being said r u two years old and have to win every single point from the city? U admitted yourself the city wasn't on to the FOP when we first got them. The city didn't hand us our ass in the last contract and you should be thankful. The union members of GM aern't feeling to good right now. That was my point in the first place. A veteran officer of over 24 years if you were on the job in 1981 since you have the contract book in front of you should know better.

U can make comments about posts and still be professional. I could make a disrespectful comment about you but I won't. Police Officers should be professinal until its time not to be. I don't know you or anything about you. Therefore have a good day and have a Happy Thanksgiving.

I am fortunate enough to have family on the job who never had a union until FOP. We do have it alot better now then they did with no union. That being said.....we need to stand our ground and progress.....not lose the things the original union fought for.....we have given the city too much back in recent years.

i too have worked multiple jobs for many years and am discusted by the entitlement mentality so often displayed by these professional victims of life who frequently turn to crime - no doubt out of frustration. the answer is to educate the general population who will then straighten out the polititions who will give us the mandate to sort out the shit heads who refuse to lead relativly honest and productive lives.

About Lefty and Shady

They are two people. I don't agree with most of what Lefty says but at least he sounds sane (albiet misguided in my opinion) and apparently has done some policework in his life. On the other hand, Shady sounds like a twit who looks down on the police and has never done any policework himself. His arrogance is apparent when he thinks we need him to add or link to definitions of the words he uses in his posts. No wonder he's medicated. He is in a profession he loathes with co-workers he despises. Perhaps they should have let him quit when he wanted to.

US jobless tally higher than expected

All Financial Times News

US initial jobless claims rose by 30,000 in the week ending November 19 from the prior week, according to figures released by the Labor Department.

Yes but the U.S. jobless rate does not include those who do not want to work, have never worked and will never work. This because I pay 30% in taxes which is given to them for doing and contributing absolutly nothing.

What ever happend to wellfare reform? Remember is was only to be availible for two years and then you on your own.

Growing economy my ass!

I have to pay over $11,000 in tuition to keep my kid out of Chicago Public School failure factories. Neither the parocial or public schools will cut you a break for being a city employee.

My family medical costs will increase greatly thanks to Richie Daley and his benefit cuts. I wonder what medial plans he and the other politicans get as their fringe.

Any my mortgage will cost an additional $600 a year thanks to increased property taxes.

As a member of the hard working middle-class, this economy sucks!

The economy is getting better all the time. We're adding new jobs! So what if most of those jobs are fast food and retail near minimum wage, but hey, it'll all work out in the end I'm sure. That's what we call "working it out differently." And if Wal Mart doesn't pay enough, you can always join the glorious imperial legions and help make the world safe for race to the bottom capitalism by dropping bombs on innocent civilians.

I'm calling it the way it is. When this program was initiated in 99' it was signed into law by Pres. Cumstain. The funding is there until 2010 at the least.

--------

Too bad it was a REPUBLICAN majority in the US House that year that passed the law.

1995-2003 104th-107th Richard K. "Dick" Armey Republican Texas

YOUR people shouldn't have let Clinton even come close to signing it into law.

The reality is that the United States is positively awash in a tsunami of imported merchandise of every conceivable description. How could it be otherwise as the captains of American industry destroy the country from within, ransacking the economy, plundering entire industries and communities as they loot the productive base of the country for their own personal enrichment, without the slightest thought for the well-being of anyone else at all. Under those conditions, as the psychopaths and sociopaths in the American government and in high finance and Fortune 500 board rooms and executive suites liquidate the country from under our feet, how could it be any different?

Their behavior is like that of madmen and mad women who heat the house in the cruel depths of a bone-chilling Siberian winter by stripping the insulation out of the walls and using it to stoke the furnace! As the flames leap higher they strip the shingles and plywood off the roof and fling them into the furnace!! As a death-numbing deep freeze descends on the home they fling back the blankets from the beds, rip the paneling off of the walls, tear up the floor boards and take an axe to the furniture and feed it all to the devouring flames in the furnace.

In the end all that remains are their shrill, demented cries of pyromanic glee, and the roaring flames of the furnace as they demolish the last vestiges of their home and dance around the last flickering embers as the last flames gutter feebly out, and the savage darkness and deadly cold of the Arctic winter descend on the remains of the homestead gutted and destroyed by their deranged insanity.

I think capitalism works a lot better than anything else out there, but there's a point where greed takes over. Here's something to chew on...United Airlines declares bankruptcy and states that they have to be able to "restructure" employee pensions and health benefits in order to be able to compete in today's market.
GM lays off 30,000 workers and makes plans to close numerous plants. Ford is rumored to be following suit soon. Reason: Two of the "Big Three" are no longer able to hold their share of today's market because of employee pensions and health care benefits. Let's not forget DaimlerChrysler, the other "American" car maker who emerged from a previous government sponsored bailout because it couldn't compete in the current market. Do you think Chrysler workers made concessions?
Finally, there's the once flourishing US steel industry which basically dried up because it couldn't compete due to the costs of pensions and other employee benefits.
My point here is that it is no coincidence that all of these industries are being systematically stripped of traditional worker benefits. At what point does this get around to governmental workers like us? Take care of your finances, stay informed and stay together. Mark my words, it's only a matter of time before they start messing with our benefits (besides health care).
