the rumor is daley wiil "bargain" for an increase in our pension contribution from 9.5% to 11% anda decrease of the city's contibution by 1.75% in echange for elimination of the residency rule! You heard it here first.
Sounds good to me, I will save money on my kids school. I dont use my house as an investment so to you people that are going to cry about your homes losing value, tough shit learn to invest your money.
Someone needs to bring the residency rule to the bargaining table on the next contract. I understand there are procedures that have to be followed before we could even request a change. Anyone know what the steps are? I know it could be done but nobody (FOP) even starts the ball rolling on this issue. Hell, Daley is getting all these people to move back into downtown from the suburbs. It's not like all the coppers would leave in droves either. Chicago would not become another Detroit with the yuppies moving back in.
I would LOVE to be able to live outside of the city, but if the residency requirement were eliminated, our property values would PLUMMET. I hope I'd be among the first 5% to sell if it happened. Chicago would look like Detroit on 5 years.
I like my house, nd I like living in Chicago. No residency, the city is done for. Ill have to move to an all white suburd, or a smll town, with a lot of bored housewives, home all day, like me. oKAY, DUMP THE RESIDENCY!!!!!!!!!!
With housing prices going through the roof and re-gentrification in many areas of the city, it is only a matter of time before the average police officer will not be able to afford a home in Chicago. Residency will become a neccessity in the not too distant future, and the city leaders know it. Don't bargain away your future for what will happen anyway.
Some of you should leave your neighborhood now and again. Property values in "copland" (016 & 022) might take a small hit, but that's doubtful. Most people wouldn't sell their home if they thought the return had dropped. Chances are if they owned their home for a few years they'd still have substantial equity. They already live in a good neighborhood, so why would they leave?
Property values will continue to escalate in all those traditionally non-police neighborhoods. Do you really think a condo at Damen & Roscoe is going to sell for less because police residency is dropped?
Go into the alpha star query some time and run it by district of residence. You'll see police live everywhere in this city that isn't a ghetto (And there are some there too).
Young coppers looking to buy their first home would benefit the most from the drop in residency. The ridiculous rise in property values and the relatively low starting pay makes ending the requirement a must. We owe it to the young coppers. Of course, like everything else there will be no unity. Everything on this job is, "what about me"?
I normally hear similar arguements about the bottom falling out of the market if we were able to move out of the city.
I looked up the census info for Chicago. Total population, 2,869121 Home ownership rate = 43.8% That turns out to 1,262,413
Depending on who you talk to, we have 11,500 officers. Or for the sake of arguement use, 13,000 p.o.s Use the same 43.8% home ownership figure and you get 5060 out or 11,500 or 5720 out of 13,000 Police officers. Basically it is an insignificant .004 %
There are a lot of other variables, like some people would not sell their house or condo right away, as mentioned earlier. I tend to think the housing prices would not drop as dramatically as some would argue. It would be a nice alternative to consider.
Anyway check out the census information at quickfacts.census.gov
LAPD does not have a residency. The only advantage an LA copper gets for living in LA is a shorter drive to work. I spoke with a lieutenant last year about that, and according to his estimate, 20% of LAPD lives in LA. His commute to work is sixty miles....ONE WAY!! If that is what makes you happy, go for it.
On that note, very few municipalities in California require their police/fire to reside in the communities they work in. Naturally, some of them, I.E. Beverly Hills, are too expensive. I think if Chicago dropped the residency, there would be a flight out of the city, but eventually, things would settle down and it could work.
The real reason (the one no one wants to say) that residency is in place is the fear of white flight. No one wants to say it, but we all know it's true. My neighborhood is integrated and I don't see any harm coming from it. Personally, I like where I live and would stay even if I could move, but those who are willing to make the trip should be allowed. But as long as Lord Daley is master over the serfs of Chicago, it won't change.
Say no to lifting the residency... Take a trip to Dallas, Tx. no residency and the whole city outside of the dowtown area is just like the 10 and 11th districts mixed together. It's a shame. A lot of empty buildings and businesses. Only taco joints and fast food gease pits. Nothing but Crack heads and whores walking around aimlessly. It's a shitty place.
