Midway Mess

Pretty amazing photos at all these sites. What a freaking mess. Does anyone else wonder why the entire Chicagoland population has such poor short term memory when it comes to driving in the snow? We must have seen 20 or 30 spinouts, cars up curbs, trucks in ditches. SLOW DOWN PEOPLE! Sheesh.

I guess I'm an asshole, but I don't think this particular string needs any humor, not with a six year old boy dead.

Just imagine, you, your wife and your three little kids are waiting at the stoplight and fucking plane lands on you. Your oldest is killed and the rest of you are in the hospital. All because a pilot didn't have the balls to admit he didn't get the approach right and couldn't make the landing, so he kept on anyway.

What a tragedy for this family. God be with them.

Ninety-eight passengers aboard the plane and only two F/1'S alledged injury. Remember the urban legend about the CTA bus that gets nicked in traffic on a southside run-four or five passengers on the bus-but dozens of "peoples" suddenly emerge-sprawled out on the street waiting for the lawyers? These two mutts probably apprenticed for last nights act as passengers on a bus. God bless the family who lost their son.

I was there, it was really sad to see that car smashed under the plane. The worst thing was seeing a child car seat laying in the snow about 30 feet from the car, I can only assume that the poor kid was sitting in it at the time the plane crushed the car. I can tell you ther weren't any jokes being told on the scene. Most of the emergency personnel, including CFD and CPD, were acting in a professional manner.

Say a prayer for the poor little guy.

I think we've all seen death and have cracked a joke on occasion, but there's absolutely nothing humorous about the tragic death of an innocent 6 year-old.

I'm not asking for anyone to throw mud needlessly, but I'm still interested since I'm no longer there...

How did Zone 6 do last night? Anybody from 007 or 008 comment on whether things were organized well, whether a lieutenant was quickly appointed as a temporary incident commander, whether staging area(s) were provided? Etc. etc. etc. I expect nothing but the best from my former coworkers on zone 6, but would like to confirm that whoever was there handled it well. TIA

Years back, a Route 126 Jackson Blvd. bus was involved in an accident at Pulaski Rd. Only a few passengers were aboard.

However, thirty reported to hospital emergency rooms for "injuries" sustained as bus passengers.

Anyone check to see if 812 is ok at 58th and Central? I think he spilled his coffee on his lap and went IOD. What I dont understand is why wasnt TRU sent to scene instead of pulling cars from every district? 1632 went last night leaving no beat car? Well atleast 1631 stayed we would want them to get sleepy and crash car.....

I worked the crash site last nite, all of the brass were out there trying to get their 5 minutes of fame. All in all it went well, don't know what kind of guy he is but 890 had his shit together, getting the streets blocked off and outside cars deployed to various intersections and crowd control.I've been to a few major disasters in 30+ years and this one was run very well.Any CPD that was out there deserves a pat on the back for a job well done.

10:10:02..Yeah, in over 20 years in this business, I've seen my share of death and destruction. Shit, any copper with two years on the job has seen death. And yes, I've cracked a ton of jokes. They call it black humor...how else do we handle it?

But I've never seen anyone joke around when the victim was a kid. Call me old fashioned, call me an asshole, but when it's a kid, it's tragic and no place for a joke.

I'm not preaching, just offering an opinion. Merry Christmas

I'm with you, 10:10:02.

When I used to see a Person Calling for Help job, I'd sit back and whimpers softly to my partner in a high-pitched voice, "hep!, hep!". Pretty black humor and all.

But the one thing that I've always seen taken seriously in this department are any crimes or incidents where the victims are either children, vulnerable elderly or handicapped people. Not. Funny.

In this enviroment, we are constantly exposed to incidents where victims are offenders and vice versa. After awhile, its hard not be skeptical of sound-minded adults. But I might as well eat the gun when I start thinking anything involving death or injury to children is funny.

It just never will be to me.

ZONE-6 always does a good job, but every once and a while we get these fill-in dispatcher's that are borderline retarded.

I was there and Carlos (Z6 dispatcher) was on his "A" Game as always....There was an eerie somberness out there....I made the turn to go south on central from archer adn "HOLY ^#%*@ it's in the middle of the street....Thoughts and prayers are with the family, the pilot adn co-pilot...I don't think they ever anticipated this and are having their own hard time dealing with it....

My hats off to CFD, they worked quietly and faster then I have ever seen to get Joshua Wood out of there...Coppers, detectives, fire and everybody else that were there did a GREAT JOB... See what we can do when we throw the petty BS aside...

Cars are always taken from throughout the city in situations like this (E2, LaSalle Fire, etc) doesn't have anything to do with DOC BS, area still needs to be secured for ongoing investigation....quit bitching about 016 being there...if it were at O'Hare, 004 would be there too...That's life and needed

Yup, its not particular to 016. That said, even though there are supposed to be TRU, SOS etc. on 3rd watch, they are not automatically available to dispatchers when the plan is implemented. In fact, pretty much the only cars available for dispatching are the district units. Thus, they are trained to pull district cars from far and wide.

Its not to say that SOS and TRU aren't sent by their supervisors or the citywide bosses. But there is some level of miscommunication if someone calls a plan 5, the dispatchers implement it with district units, and the SOS/TRU are sent as unaccountable overhead.

The rational thing to do would be to tell the supervisors in supplemental units like SOS and TRU that they will tell the dispatcher how many cars they have available, and that these cars are not under the authority of the incident commander.

If its ever happened that way, it was only rarely.

On another note, district rapid response cars, not beat cars, should have been sent by the other zones. Just a little quibble there.

The big picture is that the "special" police should be made available and accountable (when available) for the "special" emergencies that require mass-manpower. The failure to require just this is the reason that 1631 or 1632 or whoever would get sent off their beat, out of their district, out of their area, out of the north side, and all the way to Midway airport for a single-fatality plane crash.

This failure is not on the part of the lowly workers. Its a result of the bosses' desire to have unaccountable units where they can put clout bunnies and call them special.
