There are many ways to do stupid shit. Everyone has done stupid shit. The key thing you have to remember about stupid shit is to (A) try not to get caught doing stupid shit and (B) if you get caught, learn from it so you don't do stupid shit again.
Many times, stupid shit is easy to avoid. These are usually common sense issues, but everyone has bad days. Occasionally, you have to be caught doing stupid shit to learn how to avoid it. These are usually things that you have been told to avoid, but for some reason, slip your mind and you end up getting SPARred to "assist" in reminding you to avoid further stupidity. And sometimes, rarely, you run across a situation where the only good that comes out of it is that you serve as a reminder to other people NOT to do stupid shit.
This would appear to be one of those times. Over beers last night, we were talking a friend of a friend who knows someone in the "Detective Familiarization" detail. During the instruction, they were specifically told to avoid unauthorized crime scene photos, whether by disposable camera, cell phone camera or digital camera, and we understand why: in the event that alternate photos become available, cases fall apart, stories become confused, reasonable doubt can be implied where none actually exists. Additionally, the possibility of pictures falling into the wrong hands or the hands of people who shouldn't be subjected to the content (families seeing homicide scenes) increases when unauthorized photos are out there.
And yet this person, who was told by instructors that they should avoid these types of photos, that when they are sergeants should ensure that these types of photos are NOT taken, is seen on the ABC Channel 7 News posing in an unauthorized photo at what is essentially a crime scene!
What the fuck? We wonder if this person is a "merit" pick. Does this sound like someone who even remotely "merits" a sergeant spot? Like someone you want supervising police officers? Like someone you want handling crime scenes or, god forbid, a police shooting? We have our doubts and so should whoever approved the recommendation of this person for sergeant. Aren't there a few thousand other people out there a tiny little bit more deserving of promotion, at least based on having good judgment? Of course there are.
Our friend was amazed that someone like this is actually on the way to being promoted - we, on the other hand, weren't. We just shook our head and ordered another round. This is exactly what happens when what is defined as "merit" is all in who you know and not what you've done.
UPDATE: Now we are getting conflicting info that this person may be a legit score promotion. If so, it seems to be a case of "book smart, street stupid." Regardless, our info that the entire class was told to avoid unauthorized picture taking stands. Stupid shit, boys and girls, has toasted more than one career.

I have no problem with cops getting their own personal record of their work via photo, video or other recording means. I want the practice to be encouraged. All photos and reports but for matters NOT under current investigation should be public record. (Turning unexposed film over to public labs for development is a really bad idea.) The legitimate media does not as a practice show images of dead or injured crime victims.
There are no ethics or rules in our new First Amendment, free-for-all that we have with Internet bloggers or those web sites for the macabre and disgusting stuff.
If there is wrongdoing here it’s in the release or Internet publishing of the photos involved in an ongoing investigation. That was what went wrong here.
Most of us are too young to remember the days when the Cook county Morgue would display the corpses of the like of John Dillinger for long lines of the curiosity struck public. Was that kind of reality somehow harmful? Remember the crime rate was MUCH lower then.
Any real danger comes when our government hides their activities from the rest of us. It’s always done in the name of “privacy” but the motives are too often much darker.
Saying all that I recognize we have to live with the General Orders and rules we are given.

LAPD to sponsor Chicago's Gay Games
The Los Angeles Police Department will be the first metropolitan police force to sponsor Gay Games VII in Chicago next July, according to a release Thursday.
Department members will meet with participants and visitors of the Gay Games Sports and Cultural Festival to discuss career opportunities within the force, in an effort to increase diversity, the LAPD said.

this female Sgt to be (maybe) is detailed to unit 610 from 188. She and an Area One Detective were in separate photos, but in the same location. The photos were captioned by her. The Area One Dick in one of the photos is a good guy....good Detective and good person. Don't know her....she emailed these photos all over....when I got them, at least 40 other email addresses showed in the forward section. Another dumb Sgt to be....

As an NRA member, copper, gun owner (before I was a copper) I respect your opinion. hmmm, on second thought, FUCK YOU!
Some observations: 1) I think that the Sgts got what everyone else got (pay raises, .75 hour cu every working day, etc.); I think they lost on the issue of getting an additional raise based on the d-2a pay grade (not sure about that, though); 2) some things about OEC.....a) they seem to be under tremendous pressure to "get the jobs out", at whatever the cost or result. That, coupled with the fact that almost no one there has any understanding of police work, makes for a tough mix between the OEC people and the cops; b) OEC has their own, separate complaint process (not CR's); they decide what beefs to take and how to handle them, they are not CPD employees; c)if I didn't actually see this for myself, I would not have believed it: a situation where there were "problems" (on the air) between a dispatcher and a beat car. Calls were made to OEC, asking for the name of the dispatcher; OEC supervisors flatly refused to identify the dispatcher, saying, among other things, they had no obligation to identify any of their employees by name......
Homicides are up? O.K. I can live with that. Now, lets get to business....Disband TRU, Forget about these DOCs and Seatbelt missions and outdoor roll calls because after all it was all just smoke and mirrors anyway. Give us back our manpower and lets do some police work.

But I know that being a dispatcher make you a better PO! Don't believe me? Of the first 200 or 250 civilian dispatchers hired since 1995, probably 60 or 70 have gone on the job. One was made sergeant in the minimum time possible. I think he was married to Townsend's daughter.
Than there is Roy I. of the recent detective promotion list. Only 3 years as a PO and he's in the top 50 on the first dicks list.

All of a sudden, Photoshop pictures placing him at the scene of various disasters appeared on the Internet, and whole web sites were dedicated to him. Does anybody here really think that anything we do has any effect on the murder rate? Few of these are street crimes (i.e., in the public way by random, unknown offenders); most are domestics with known offenders (these occasionally get solved); and how do you predict or stop either????
Give us back our manpower - get rid of TRU, SOS, and any all those extra tactical/gang units who are floating around all the time and let the Captains run their watches.

Most of these murders are not domestics, they are drug/gang related. If TRU, SOS, Gang/Tact Teams, etc are not saturating the area and locking these assholes up, the murder rate would be a lot higher. Do I feel bad the districts are understaffed, of course. But the answer isn't pulling these guys who love doing what they do back into the districts to handle bullshit beat jobs. The answer is to hire more cops to do that stuff, the city just can't seem to find people who want to.
Heard there is a CR number on those photos. Also a photo lab called OPS and obtained a different CR number with the complaint that they had to develop crime scene photos with dead people in them.

SCC, I agree with you 110% about the planecrash photos. I received them in e-mails from 3 different people, none of them police, but civilian friends, with notes attached telling me how ignorant my co-workers are. Another blackeye for us.
You'll all be sucking her ass 3 months from now when you want 2 on the end with your slip held.
I have 19yrs on now, and enjoyed being the police (working/no-working.. who cares)and look forward to more years. I have a great job (not patrol, an outside unit) but have the utmost repect for the uniformed guys on this job. It is one of the hardest jobs (confined to a beat,sector,etc., answereing radio assignments, and putting up with all types of BULLSHIT from citizens to a (some)supervisor(s) who doen't have a clue regarding police work or taking care of his men.
Furthermore, there are also great working coppers in outside units along with non-workers. True some have inherited their SPOTS, but in time they will learn how to treat fellow policemen.
Your work and attitude are reflected in how YOU were trained on this job.
Yes, we should worry about what other coppers do on and off duty, but realize that we DO need to LOOK OUT for each other and when the time comes to to help, 99% of us will and do the right thing.

I never claimed to be "better" than a beat guy, we all started out in districts at some point. When last I checked we are all on the same side, so I hardly see how calling me an asshole or telling me that I am claiming to be the police helps our cause. I do not bother with dispersals and I wouldn't even know how to do a spray paint arrest, I am not pimpy like that. Just because I feel that some units are needed does not mean beat cars are not needed. We all serve a purpose out there.
And our purpose is to support those beat cars!
The blonde ain't stupid, fellas. She just plays it up. She is arrogant. She plays the stupid blonde to suck up to the bosses, and it works. She did it because she knows she can and no one will do a thing to her. She was told not to do it just a couple weeks earlier in the academy and she ignored it because she just doesn't care.
