Psych Test Fallout
Is the Psych test unfair? We have no idea. Back when we took it, it was a couple of hundred questions (200 or so?) all basically variations on the same theme: Do you hate your mother?; Do you hear voices?; Do you like to experience/inflict pain on yourself or others?; crap like that. We saw it as an amusing exercise in attempting to remember how certain questions were phrased so that we would answer consistently throughout. To an organized psychotic (which is how we categorize ourselves), we did pretty well. We don't even remember the interview portion of the test, but it must have gone well because they hired us. We felt it was kind of lame.
But then we heard stories about people who had sued to get on the department after failing the psych test and realized that there must be something in the results (we don't understand the mechanics of all of it) that picks up on certain warning signs, because a lot of those people who sued to get around the psych test were borderline nuts - some were bat-shit crazy.
Now certain aldercreatures are crying "racism" of all things and the city council is debating continuing the contract of the current testing firm. Part of this ties into our previous post about the mayor demanding the departments reflecting the city diversity AND having the best qualified people in the positions. But if you aren't thoroughly screening the people you're bringing in, aren't you going to be paying out the ass in lawsuits somewhere down the line?

I'm a white guy and I had trouble with the Psych test back in 93 and I didn't cry Racism...first of all because I couldn't and second of all...nobody would listen... I made it though and I took the test for Sgt. and made that LEGIT too....imagine that?? The CPD needs extensive use of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), a widely-used screening device consisting of over 500 true/false items to weed out the psychopathic and mentally unstable applicants without regard to ethnicity or gender.
If the MMPI results set off red flags, a psychiatric interview by skilled professionals is mandatory.
All candidates for exempt positions should also be retested since a statistically significant number of these people are sociopaths and even psychotic.

Well, this is Chicago, anything could and will happen.
Bogus........years ago minorities and almost exclusively Blacks were denied jobs on the CPD, because for some reason they were detected with heart murmurs doing their physicals and again the city was sued and after rechecking the city hired medical techs,these guys took it on their selves to thin out the number of minority applicants on their own....The city had to pay up with tenure and back pay...GUESS OUT OF WHO'S Pockets!!!!Now everything isn't about racism....But the city of Chicago has such a terible track record that almost anything that they do can be questioned one way or another.....actually before pointing fingers the city should first procure those individuals tests and find out if and fact that they failed or not....as far as I know all that the applicants get is a notification of pass or fail.....if most of us took any type of exam and was informed that you have failed it...most would want to know what portions or questions that they might have blown...I think its only fair if the city can call you a NUT...they should be able to show you that you are, by the test you paid to take....if you are diagnosis with some sort of phobia, someone especially those conducting the test should be able to put a label to it and give the results to the effective person, that could eliminate alot of the problems.....but then if these testers can't subtantiate what they are saying....that's when the shoe will drop again, didn't just recently some hired medical personnel for the city provide medical tests/procedures for city employees without even seeing them
but they bill the city anyway and now all this have to be redone at a cost to the same tax payers
The City paid our because they are a bunch of spinless, yellow-bellied, cowardly whores. The cowardly whores (City Hall/Police HQ) did not have the balls to stand up for what is right. Never did, never will. Maybe the question that eliminated some peoples was "HAVE YOU EVER BEEN ARRESTED FOR A FELONY".
Why is that an objectional question? Because most of city hall would have to truthfully answer YES!
When I had my psych interview (1994) the three dimestore psychologists doing all the interviews were black. Maybe they were filled with self-hate.
With all of the nut cases on this job, The City should be happy that they are able to replenished their roll. Do you know how many coppers have been put on pscy leave and return to duty after six months of paid R&R. A couple of years ago we even had some female trying to hang her self at the academy. Then we have those guys who think they can drink their weight in booze and still drive, and the guy who's always bitching because everybody is an asshole but him, the ever imposing know it all, done it all. I really believe after 5 years on this job everyone of us would have a hard time getting pass a pscyh test, most barely passing the Sgt test.
Get over it Kiddies, this is the same City where all you used to do is go into a barber shop in the 9th ward drop $250.00 and start as a policemen the next week, still everyone that comes on this job is via of some stinkin' exam

Like I said , Ive taken probably 35 police tests in the suburbs when I was trying to get on this job. I took the same written test twice in one weekend with different departments failing one and passing the other.
Its a typical black thing as always. Why not change the test to proper english like saying the word ask instead of ax, and funeral instead of froonrall.
There are several lie indicators in those tests. Maybe marine boy just isnt cut out to be the police? However quite saying its because the test is bogus or cuz we black. Its getting old. Just a couple of observations, nothing more than that.
Ike Carothers' has a relative that represents every high level gangbanger from the westside. Whenever a P.O. testifies she calls them a racist. Ms. Rivkin-Carothers also sues the police dept on a regular basis while her relative Ike is on the Police/Fire Committee and approves the payouts.
The psych exam is useless. Seen ONE copper through the last 20+ years get fired THREE separate times because of insane behavior on and off duty. He sues and gets back on. After the last incident he was off for over FIVE years and yet was given his job back.

When I came on(86)the psych test was the MMPI. If red flags were raised they sent you to a shrink for further testing. I don't know why they changed it.

The car had seen better days.
Police on Sunday were trying to figure out who set fire to a Chicago Police officer's squad car Saturday night -- a day after its window had been smashed in -- and whether the two incidents were related.
The officer had parked the unmarked police vehicle near his home in the 6900 block of North Algonquin on the Northwest Side, police said.
Sometime between Friday and Saturday, someone broke the car's window and removed a city parking placard, a Jefferson Park District lieutenant said.
Then, around 10:30 p.m. Saturday, someone "torched" the car, the lieutenant said.
"There might be a relationship between the two [incidents]," he said.
The police Bomb and Arson Unit, which is investigating, would not provide further details.
Probably caused by careless smoking by the user of the vehicle.

* no, I don't have my masters degree like you, but as I stated, this test doesn't weed out all the nuts. you don't need a masters degree to see that. and i know the web here knows that because their a sharf knife in the drawer of life.
Psych test or no psych test, it really doesn't matter. Nut jobs always have and always will slip through the cracks on this job. I've only been on a short time (6 years) and in that time I've seen nuts skate through on a daily basis. Sure, some of them get jammed up and end up on psych-leave, but 9 out of 10 of them usually get their jobs back, with back pay to boot.
Yes, the psych test may be racially motivated as a way to keep a quota, but if they get
rid of it or change it, they'll just find another way to weed people out so that the police department "reflects the diversity of the city."
But we are all to blame for this trend. How many of us have witnessed first hand the nuttiness on this job and did nothing about it? Probably most of us.....
So answer this: Are all the rejects placed in 025 on purpose, or does being assigned there just make you stupid ( while believing that you are God's gift to the world ) over time?

I am not going to name any names, but if you worked third watch in 013 between 2001 and 2003 you know about the nut cases that worked the wagon..ever heard of the incident that happened on Erie/Noble in front of a local pub while people are eating inside and these two officers got into it and one unsnaps his holster...like I said nut cases.

I remember taking the police test in Las Vegas about 10 years ago and they had one of those 500 question psych tests.
I swear there were easily 50 questions asking about necrophilia in different ways!!!!! Is fucking corpses a big problem out west or what?!?!?
They also had at least 100 questions regarding gambling, but that at least seems understandable.

How about a psych before you retire? Guys were PTSD'd after Nam who were supply clerks who may have been shot at a couple times. Ever notice how a civilian breaks a finger nail in a train wreck then gets a lawyer and doctor to claim they are suffering post traumatic stress, can't work for 5 years etc etc. Gee, 25yrs in the crap. shoveling a 8 week decomp into a body bag in august,handling dozens more, watching someone burn to death in a car, jumper from 20 floors up, shotguns to the face, infants with cracked skulls, splayed vaginas. The current revised Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI-2) consists of 550 true/false items. The questions are measured on about 13 different scales including psychopathy, paranoia, schizophrenia, depression, hypochondria, etc.
Perhaps the most sophisticated and subtle scale (the K-scale) measures the "defensiveness" of the subject while two other scales measure any attempts to falsify results. Even if a clever subject attempts to fake responses for better or worse, it will become apparent to the professional analyst by elevated scores well outside the normal range, even off the chart in some cases/scales.
A significant number of police applicants would most likely have problems with Scale 4 (Psychopathy). Generally, the scores of serial killers are among those that score off the chart in Scale 4.
As a standardized psychological instrument, the MMPI has been around for more than fifty years. Empirical results have long established that the MMPI is the most effective and widely-used validation instrument in measuring mental instability.
If the city does lower the bar on the use of the MMPI, it will ultimately accomodate walking "time bombs" donning the blue.
Sadly, it will eventually become apparent to all that in this age of "political correctness", any further watering down of standardized IQ tests and the MMPI will result in an even more dysfunctional police department.
The City must reassess its priorities and re-establish and maintain high standards across the board lest we suffer the catastrophic consequences. Even if "ethnic diversity" and recruitment suffers, the highest standards are not an option.
If the City foolishly opts otherwise, it will only come back to haunt them--big-time.

If you want to see a Messed Up Police Dept that really lowered their standards to attract diversity just look at the D.C. Police Dept the early 1990's. They are still settling lawsuits from those hires.

I failed the Psych test the first time I took it. So be It. Didn't get hired.
Went to the library, checked out the book explaining the indicators (flagged questions) for public service/police. CPI-434 (one of the tests used) has 91 indicators, and several good books stating what they are (read as - state the exact questions and the desired answer). learn the question, learn the answer they want, fill in the right circle when you take the test. ITS JUST THAT SIMPLE.
I don't know why it is bad to be afraid of deep water if you are the police, I just know I have to answer that I'm not afraid of deep water to get hired (note: I'm not afraid of deep water, just the things that may live in it).
If you want the job bad enough, do your homework.

Not hiring, not promotions, not assignments.
The reasons these psych tests are used (MMPI and CPI-434) is because they have withstood many legal challenges (arguable the only thing this city cares about).
If you are, or know, a potential hire that is worried about the Psych test, instruct him/her to go the their nearest college library and STUDY THE TEST. If they are too lazy, fuck em.
