Best Qualified AND Most Diverse
- If 25,000 people applied for $10.41-an-hour jobs at the new Evergreen Park Wal-Mart, imagine the crowd when Chicago holds its first firefighters entrance exam in more than a decade for a job that pays $44,838-a year.
- "We not only want the best-qualified set of applicants. We also want the most diverse set of applicants. We want a Fire Department that looks like Chicago -- and that means more women and minorities in the ranks. I want children in Chicago -- regardless of gender or background -- to see Chicago firefighters in action and think, 'That could be me some day,' " Mayor Daley said after a Navy Pier graduation for new firefighters.
First of all, the WalMart job is an opening level retail job. We wouldn't expect master's degree candidates to be applying for a job that pays $10.41 an hour. We'd expect to see kids working their first jobs, retirees looking to stay active, persons hard up on their luck and others who chose not to continue their education to be the mainstay of the WalMart work force.
For the Fire Department? We would expect reasonably fit men and women of all stripes who can climb ladders, move equipment, drag hoses full of water up stairwells, and a certain amount of bravado necessary to run into a burning building and cut out the roof that they're standing on (we've been in a burning building and it ain't fun.)
We could really give a rat's ass if the Fire Department reflects the city population. We just want them at our house within seconds of our 911 call. Same thing with the Police. Black, Brown, White or Yellow - show up - fast. Sure, reflecting the city might be an ideal - but it isn't reality. You can't run a city on an ideal, no matter how hard the mayor tries to convince you otherwise. As an aside, the mayor is unwittingly making an argument against "merit" promotions and that just tickles our funny bone to no end. Does anyone think he even realizes it?

no, I don't think the mayor even realizes he's making an argument against his own "argument." The best and the brightest...and that it might conflict with the idea (democratic party?) that "diversity" is the goal. So, what is it? Should the workforce "look like" the municipality, or should the workforce be the best?

Because if you follow the popular media you'll know that fireman are heroes and cops are all crooked. There are three offenders in Hollywood: cops, soldiers, and politicians. In 50% of these cop shows the offender is always a policeman. The fireman is always your friend and a hero. Of course working 80 days a year and sleeping at work is always a good incentive to take a job.
Did you read the saturday suntimes? Now the africans are complaining about the psych test. Hell I failed dozens of them on suburban tests. I should of called the news papers as well. Keep your nose in a book and forget about being a rapper.
Walmart is hiring off-duty cops for security. How many of you rent-a-guns gonna jump. Hey, they might take some of you retired guys who MUST stay here and carry guns.

Why the hell would anyone want to apply for fire and police?
Some of these civil service people are very strange. What these departments need to do is to give psych tests in the beginning of hire as well as later on.
I have never seen so many that have gambling, sex addiction, alcohol, domestic problems, etc.
They can't pay enough for the crap you guys do, both fire and police. Moreso police.
That's why nobody applies...
so that explains why the CFD is 80% White..........
I have to laugh at the testing this city does to hire candidates for the fire department.
Years ago the city was not happy with the results of the fire test. Because not many minorities ( read black) did well. So the city hires an "African American" firm to develop the last test that was taken. Again the city was not happy that minorities (read Black) did not do well. Ironic it was a test developed by another black person or persons.
Now I really have to laugh, this new test is only going to be Pass/Fail. no ranking, just get over the the lowered threshold and ..BAM... your in the fire acadamy.
Maybe Trotter could just have the candidates play a game of musical chairs. That sounds just as challenging as how this new test will be.
Say what you will, but Lord help us if one of our houses are on fire.
I personally can not stand the dumbing down of standards just for the sake of praying to the alter of P.C. and "diversity".

For the right price a lot of coppers would jump at Walmart Security job.
You see, we get bare minimum raises that are taken right back with overinflated health insurance rates.
So in essence we do not even get a decent cost of living raise as opposed to lakeys like you that have your marketing or techie job and are given 30,000.00 a year bonus' with stock options to go along with it.
Yet, you don't see morons/techies/marketing geeks like you getting shot at, chasing the bad guy, listening to how everyone pays their salery everyday, in general putting up with a whole lotta shit day in and day out.
No, you live in your $500,000.00 condo and complain about how bad the police are to you and yours.

Lets face it, fireman are not the sharpest tacks in the box. I just hope Trotter packs the Fire Department with enough blacks, hispanics and women to give them a taste of what the police have been dealing with for the past 20+ years.
What would be even better would be if fire had to start working eight (8) hour days instead of their stupid one day on two/three days off. They'd all have to give up their full-time professions of carpentry and other brainless trades. There is absolutely no reason for fire to work a 24 hour shift. This is not 1863 where they had to travel to the firehouse via horse & buggy.
Fireman are lazy! Unfortunately, the public worships them as heros, while the police are scorned whenever possible.
Yeah, I dislike fireman. Thats because I know them to be the drunken, lazy, thiefs that they truly are.

Here is Daley's take on the Fire Department, and for that matter on the rest of us.
About 10-12 years ago, the Chicago Sun-Times had a series where readers could write in and ask questions of famous people. When it was Daley's turn, someone who I assume is a fireman asked. (As near as I can quote this word for word.)
"How can the city grant the mayor a 35% pay increase and the aldermen a 30% increase and yet only offer the firefighters and police officers a 2 and 1/2% pay increase?"
Hizzonor's reply, "I am the mayor of a great city and the aldermen are the legislators of a great city. I am very proud of the salary I make. If this person doesn't like what we are offering, he can quit. We had 40,000 people sign up to take the firefighters test and he won't be missed."
This is the mentality of the man who has cut our benefits to finance hired trucks, iron fences and flower pots. He has gotten away with it because he thinks we would never vote him out or that he would never wind up in an orange jumpsuit. I wonder if Dan Rostenkowski will return the favor of wineing and dining him just before he reports to Club Fed.

How many of us (the 2 1/2 %-ers) found ourselves out on some street corner getting 40oz lofted at us by the animals, getting shot at, risking our collective asses, as we fought to maintain some order in the City? It was also our best opportunity to to just let the animals act like the assholes they are, and let Mr 35% and his army of 30%-ers take care of that problem. Alas, we did then, and we will do again; the next riot, the next shooting, the next major incident here, we will continue to do "a good job", while Mr 35% and the 30%-ers continue to rob & steal every thing they can!
God Forbid anything like Sept 11th happens here. I wouldent wish that on anyone! (OK, maby 1 or 2 hee, hee) Lil Dick Daley will probably give himself a 50% and the rest of his ass-licks a 45% raise, and we'll still get a 2, or 2 1/2%!
