Sorry to burst your bubble, but it will take a change in Illinois law to accomplish that.
When Ogilve was Sheriff, they changed the state law to divide the Sheriff's office into three branches: Police, Corrections and Court Services. In the smaller counties of Illinois, a Deputy Sheriff could work in the courts, jail or the street. Same title, same pay. In Cook County it's different. Until or unless the law is changed, you'll have the three branches.
We need stricter accountability and screening for DOC. And while I'm smoking wacky tobaccy, I may as well wish for a legitimate process for appointment to the Sheriff's Police. Anyone with a 3rd grade education or better knows the Sheriff's office is politically motivated on all fronts. It's politically motivated to get hired in court services or DOC, and it's definately politically motivated to become a sheriff's police. Until this changes, it will continue to be a cesspool.
These problems will continue until the jail staff is doubled...which will be never. Even a 50% increase in staff would help tremendously. But Stroger needs that money for more important things...just ask him.
There are good people working there, and shitty, gangbangers working there. JUST LIKE ON CPD!!! Imagine how much just ONE dirty jail guard could fuck up. It's mind boggling!

If you really are CPD, I wouldn't throw stones, my man. I've worked as a deputy for 5 years and have been CPD for around 5 years now. I can tell you that the shit I've watched CPD guys pull off has made my head spin compared to anything I ever saw a deputy do on duty!

Actually the Cook County Correctional Officers, Court Service Officers ETC are the Police. They also have more juristicion greater that CPD. You can't blame the rank and file for turning the Dept. into political garbage, blame the polititions who hired the gang bangers, low lifes and other slugs.

Deputies and Corrections are certified as Peace Officers not Police Officers. Training is different. Deputies and Corrections get half the acadamy training as Police Officers. So they are not the Police.
Chicago doesn't have a SWAT team. When that det. got shot in 025 they showed up after bad guy was dead and gone. But their boss gave the whole team medals. Useless clowns. Go figure.
To 3:38 Jurisdiction was not the proper term, but you are granted your powers by the state. All state certified police have equal power state wide. Yes an on-duty Cook County Sheriff has more "jurisdiction" a.k.a. square miles to cover. But the point is moot, a sheriff can't order me to do shit, nor can I order him to do shit. The state law supercedes any training Bulletin put together by the city legal dept.
The Training Bulletin is an interpretation of the State law. When I came on the job, there was no such thing as a State Certification Test--so am I certified or not?

But all in all, we, CPD are the hardest working, bullshit absorbing, must live in the city, political influenced department around. Try working midnights in 007. Try working a rapid car in 011. Try working in 002, 003, 004, 005, 006, 008, 009, 010, 015, 025. But stay in 007 or 011 and compare that to your jail guards, county police, or coppers in the burbs.
I love it when all those other places roll their eyes when they hear a CPD copper say, "Chicago is the real police". If we are not, who the fuck is? Palos Hills? Darien? As fucked up Cicero is and all the shit their police put up with, they still have a few places to run and hide..relax..eat at a nice, clean place. Find me a nice place in 007 or 011...can you?

I worked the suburbs before coming on the job here in Chicago, and yes, we deal with a whole hell of a lot more shit than most suburbs could ever hope to.
But that doesn't mean we walk on water. Suburban coppers don't deal with as much as we do, but they get their fair share of shit. And unfortunately, some of them die over it.
I can't stand prima donnas that think because they're city police, that their shit doesn't stink. I also can't stand that "real police" mentality. It's condescending and bullsht. Having been on both sides of the fence I don't think I'm anything special.
I've also dealt with feds more than I care to say. Most of them are all right, but a few of them think that federal jurisdiction gives them some special power. They're assholes...those kinds of feds.
Those of us in law enforcement, whether we're corrections, police, sheriff, state, or fed....we're just doing a job that needs to be done. This "I'm the real police, or I'm better than you" mentality is bullshit. Prima donnas can go fuck themselves.
Look at the entire picture, not just the city and the suburbs, but cops EVERYWHERE! We're all doing a job that needs to be done. Some of us have it better than others in terms of benefits, salary, perks, whatever. But not a one of us walks on water. If you think you do, then go fuck yourself!

9:12, I got it the first time. The picture you are trying to paint is a jail guard or REAL suburban police departments (I do not consider Cicero, Maywood, Harvey suburbs) and CPD officers have the same job. We don't.
Yeah, we all have fancy lil uniforms, stars, guns..stuff like that. But our work place is much different...just look at the posts above.
The "38 year Chicago Vet." (ooooook!) says burbs invest money in up-to-date equipment. True. We are one of the busiest police departments in the world, yet...how many times we went out on the street without a working PDT? How many times we let go an offender because he gives a bullshit name and nothing we can do because our PDT's are not up-to-date? On top of all we deal with, we have shit like that to deal with.
Yes, we also have to deal with lazy supervisors. Everybody seems to know what the working conditions CPD has to deal with, yet everyone else feels they can relate.
We have "13,000" people on this job. That's more than most cities here. A lot of different attitudes, and that beat copper deals with all of um.
Aside the "fat lady bosses" and "being proud of saving gang bangers", working 6 days in a row makes us different, our equipment, or "clients", our partners, PPO's, shitty cars, gives us much more to put up with.
It is much more stressful here...plain and simple, than any other place. I do not see anything wrong with being proud of being able to endure the stress..on the street and station. To know I can put up with all the shit here, make me know for sure I can put up with anything in life. That's why CPD coppers are proud to say "Real police" (I wonder how many county guys, suburbanites or other wannabe's rolled their eyes!) :)

But imagine yourself a Harvey police officer for example. Harvey is a cesspool and faster than a lot of city districts. You deal in all the bullshit we do, and yet you work by yourself. Then imagine again your being told by some city copper that you're not the "real police." Imagine then how you'd have contempt for all the prima donnas who set themselves up as better than you.
