Sergeant Test

Any good stories about the test? Is the next Sergeant of Police reading this blog today? Well, probably not THE next sergeant off the new list because they're still supposed to make one more class off the old list. But maybe the class after that.

Personally, we think we aced it.

I think you aced part one of the test too, SCC.
The problem is...Everyone aces part one of the test.
5,000+ take the test, only about 400 fail it. (Must make sure our "merit" guys pass part one, or they can't be promoted by merit).
I would love to know how they decide the passing score for part one.

A little over twenty years ago then Secretary of Education Willliam Bennett described the Chicago Public School system as the most failed system in the nation. Yet even today this most failed school system requires as score of seventy-percent to pass any given course matter. Not so for the Chicago Police Department, which now requires an incredible fifty-five percent right, or less, on a the Part 1 written examination, thus enabling ward healers to promote morons into the supervisory ranks. You saw the results of this process strutting around the halls of Lane Tech this morning. Another thousand years of evolution won't change them, neither will meritorious promotions.

The tests are rigged to benefit the city's agenda, to act as a people pleaser. There are minorities on this job that are offended by the issue of saying a score was lowered to make it appear they are not smart enough to pass. Natch, if your going to get promoted who the hell is going to turn it down? None of us. I know the arguements, we still get to blame the Pol's and their own greed.

Nepotism is a major problem in Chicago and always has been. How do you clean that up? So regardless if you have sense or not, whether your qualified or not, you go to the top. This has screwed the dept., to an all time low, on top of the above issue's.

The player's in city hall are playing back biting games to advance their own agenda's. The old Vote's and We Rule Mentality!

The passing score is the lowest ass-clown-with-clout test score. Why do you think it takes a month to "figure" out the results. A scantron sheet can be graded in seconds. It would take a day tops to grade and print out all of the letters to your house with the results. I know many people that work at Ernst and Young LLC(Proctored and made up the test)

How many cops does it take to throw a man down the stairs???

None. He fell.

A policeman is on scene at a terrible accident - body parts everywhere. He is making his notes of where the pieces are and comes across a head.

He writes in his notebook: "Head on bullevard" and scratchs out his spelling error.

"Head on bouelevard" Nope, doesn't look right - scratch scratch.

"Head on boolevard..." dang it! Scratch scratch.

He looks around and sees that no one is looking at him as he kicks the head.

"Head on curb."

A squad car driver was covering a quiet beat out in the sticks when he was amazed to find a former lieutenant on the police force covering the beat.

He stopped the car and asked, "Why, Irish Mike, this wouldn't be your new beat out here in the sticks, would it?"

"That it is, "Irish Mike replied grimly, "ever since I arrested the judge on his way to the masquerade ball."

"You mean you pinched his honor?" asked Pat.

"How was I to know that his convict suit was only a costume?" demanded Mike.

"Well," mused Pat, "there's a lesson in this somewhere."

"That there is," replied Irish Mike...." 'Tis wise never to book a judge by his cover."

I'd personally like to thank the city for fucking up the test and wasting my precious time. After spending fifteen minutes double checking the Incident reporting guide for the answer to the dog fighting question, my proctor (who was a hot little blonde cooze) said that the question was fucked up.

I also wrote " I am taking this test under duress" on the top. If I am unlucky enough to get promoted out of the Detective Division, I'll at least get my 25 bucks back, and maybe be able to fuck some hot PPOS when they come into a district.

Also, if "dude's" answer key next to me was any indication of overall performance, SOME people will NEVER get promoted.

Oh -- and I loved shitting at Gangbanger Tech. No doors on the stalls.

You know what makes this test so legit too-LOL. The department doesn’t take the first and second part’s score and add them to get a grand total and then you are ranked. Not only does this department perpetuate mediocrity, it embraces it.

"RESIDENTAL ARSON"

Not arson cause it was under $150, Not agg, cause well y know.

3/25/2006 06:56:00 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

The $125 dollar value of the dog house was a red herring, not a mistake. Therefore the best answer might have been agg. arson in that "property of another" means any property, whether real or personal... I might be in the doghouse myself with my best guess, but I chose agg. arson.

3/25/2006 06:57:00 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

But a doghouse, although personal property, is not a dwelling. Therefore, can't be residential arson.

3/25/2006 07:00:00 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

It's agg arson. A HOUSE OR STRUCTURE ADJACENT TO a dwelling or home.

3/25/2006 07:10:00 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I think it was arson-a bad question but technically a dog house is real property...something built in a fixed place...nailed down, dug in etc. If it's burnable it's permanenet enough to be real property regardless of cost. Sh**ty question though.

3/25/2006 07:15:00 PM

I didn't take the test, but from what I read about this "dog house arson" case - in order to charge AGG. ARSON, you must knowingly damage any building or structure (you have this), AND - I repeat - AND - know that someone is present within (or reasonably should know) or any person suffers great bodily harm etc., or a police officer or firefighter is injured in the coourse of performing his duties. Based on what I read here - your choice is definitley arson, not aggravated.

After I finished part 1, I had about 1.25 hours to daydream. So I was looking at the walls of the classroom (Steinmetz H.S.) and It took me back to my days in grammar school..the crayon drawings on the walls, the colored construction paper designs that adorned the walls, etc..When SHIT, IT HIT MY SUBLIMINAL..That's why Chicago is so FUCKED-UP, this is high school, NOT Grammar school!

These gang-banging, high school fucks today, are doing in high school..what I was doing in 4th-6th grade.

Bottom line is my grammar school education from 30+ years ago has served me better than a high school education would today!

Another thing..Those desks seemed spacious 30 years ago..Next test that comes around "The Brass" will have to make some special accomodations (like sitting us at tables in the lunch room) for us old FAT asses that won't be able to wedge ourselves into those desks made for 100 lb. kids!

The F/1 next to me had her cell phone and it was ringing in her purse. She also went to the bathroom 2 times during the test. The dog fighting question was bad and a couple of those questions dealt with things we, in the CPD, do not deal with.

HEY YOU GUYS!
JUST THOUGHT I'D BRING UP AN OBSERVATION I MADE AS ALL OF US SGT. HOPEFULS WAITED TO TAKE THE CITY'S VERSION OF AN ACADEMIC BRAIN BUSTER HELD AT LANE TECH. SOME OF THE QUESTIONS WERE RIDICULOUS AND WE WILL BE TALKING ABOUT THEM FOR SOME TIME.
DESPITE THE OBVIOUS CLOUT QUESTIONS I OBSERVED SOMETHING ELSE THAT MIGHT INTEREST SOME OF YOU.
IT SEEMED APPARENT TO ME THAT IF "JAMAL" THE TERRORIST WANTED TO MAKE A MARK FOR HIMSELF IN THIS CITY'S AND END UP WITH 70 BITCHES IN THE AFTERLAND ALL HE WOULD HAVE HAD TO DO WAS MONITOR THE WELL PUBLICIZED NOTIFICATION OF THE SERGEANTS'TEST AND LOCATIONS AND PLACE A CAR WITH EXPLOSIVES IN THE PARKING LOT. AT LANE TECH WITH THE MISMANAGED SYSTEM OF PARKING AND THE LINE THAT FOLLOWED IT WOULD HAVE BEEN EASY.
WAS THERE ANY KIND OF SECURITY ANYWHERE AROUND TO OBSERVE THIS TYPE OF BEHAVIOR? I CERTAINLY DIDN'T SEE ANY.
REALITY: WHAT PERCENTAGE OF THE POLICE DEPARTMENT DO YOU THINK WOULD HAVE BEEN INJURED AT 1230 HOURS AT LANE TECH WHEN THE EARLY TESTERS MET THE AFTERNOON TESTERS IF "HABIB" HAD BEEN THERE?
IT'S NO WONDER THERE WAS NO QUESTION ON THE EXAM RELATING TO THE TERRORIST AND WMD GENERAL ORDERS ON THE READING LIST !
NO ONE KNOWS WHY THE TEST HAD TO BE HELD EXCUSIVELY ON THE NORTH SIDE BUT AT LEAST ON THE SOUTH SIDE "WE" WOULD HAVE RECOGNIZED "HABIB" IF HE WAS IN THE AREA AND PERHAPS BEEN ABLE TO STOP A TRAVESTY FROM OCCURRING.
THANK TO HABIB FOR DROPPING THE BALL!!!

(720 ILCS 5/20‑1) (from Ch. 38, par. 20‑1)
Sec. 20‑1. << Arson>> .
A person commits << arson>> when, by means of fire or explosive, he knowingly:
(a) Damages any real property, or any personal property having a value of $150 or more, of another without his consent; or
(b) With intent to defraud an insurer, damages any property or any personal property having a value of $150 or more.
Property "of another" means a building or other property, whether real or personal, in which a person other than the offender has an interest which the offender has no authority to defeat or impair, even though the offender may also have an interest in the building or property.
(c) Sentence.
<< Arson>> is a Class 2 felony.

It's sad to think that we must discuss what we shouold do with the Felony gun thief job.

1st
The beat car should slap Patel for bothering him with nonsense.

2nd
Drive the old guy home.

3rd
If you do call for a Sgt. you're gonna have to take a report. And if you have a report the best way to save the old guy from sitting with the gang bangers in the lockup and not jam yourself up is to tell Patel to get a summons. Like someone said earlier your not a Doctor and obviously Patel wants Police action.

If the guty really is senile, then there is not intent in the first place.

Well I guess I should have expected the usual, but I thought it was made clear that no cell phones, beverages, or bags were allowed. Me, foolishly thinking that only professionals were taking the SGT. test would read and follow the clearly posted instructions on the enterence form like I did, and most others. As I sat at my desk waiting to start the test in walked a F/1 with her cell phone to her ear having a loud conversation and at the same time checking in with the proctor who then informed her that cell phones are not allowed at which time she replied, "sorry darling." About one hour into the test a hip-hop type song began to ring-out through our testing room for a good 15 seconds. As we all looked at each other a different F/1 reached into her bag that was on the floor next to her, pulled out her cell phone and said, "sorry guys." She then had to leave the room to take the call. I also noticed that she has a nice big bottle of water on her desk. Foolish me, I left my bottle water and cell phone in my car like the instructions said! I guess I should have expected the usual!

my answer to the $125 dog house.
agg arson
why: It states, in the course of committing arson he knowingly damages, partially or totally, ANY building or structure, including AJACENT building or structure and he knows or reasonably should know that one or more people are present therein. So my figuring was that the dog house was a structure next to the RESIDENCE that had people in it. So if a crazy nut sets fire to a detached garage in the backyard while the people are in the residence 20ft away eating dinner. its aggravated.

I think most of you screwed up the dog house question. A dog house is personal property, not real property, generally its value is less than $150.00 but it could be more but more importantly it is not designed to house people. Best answer would be Criminal Damage to Property. Think of it as a detached structure, such as a garage w/o the value. The $125.00 was deliberately placed in the question to get the dog house out of the arson category. So simple yet so far away.

Don't know what the answer was to the old man who stole the gum but it really sounds like a bad question. OTOH if you brought me an old man like think for approval based on these sets of facts, I'd really be pissed. You, not the clerk, are the police - you are not trained attack dogs who jump into action just because someone yells attack, if your gut says that this is not a proper arrest situation, don't make the arrest, advise warrants, or issue an ANOV if you can (I know its theft so you can't here, but perhaps in other situations.) All that will happen once I get the arrest report is that I will release the guy w/o charges, ream you a new one, and maybe send the guy to the hospital if we can't locate a relative. No way is this guy going to court!!!!!! Just my 2 cents.

Day guy (0838) made a legimate point about detonating an explosive-ladden vehicle at Lane Tech at about 1300 hrs taking out the test-taking morning shift and the test-waiting afternoon group. I think almost half of the department would hav been lost.

Yet, he should be condemned for his use of anti-Arab slurs in his tirade. I hope he is at the end of his career and not the beginning because of his bias against the Arab community.

proposal for establishing the "passing score" for the Sgt's test:
take 10 cadets from the most receint graduating class (random can be fixed, so lets say the 10 cadets with the highest star numbers), have them take the test, and average their scores. above that score is passing.
$1000 says their scores would be better then what the city establishes as the "passing score", which is to suggest that many of our "merit" Sgt's can't even supervise a PPO.

You are working BT 2510, sitting in your car at 5040 W. Fullerton eating a doubble pizza when you monitor a call of children held hostage in a burning building on the 4900 block of W. Dickens. As you respond to the scene, you observe the assigned car stop in front of the residence, exit the vehicle, and run into the burning house. Shortly there after, you hear numerous gun shots, followed by the officer leaving the house carrying 2 children over his shoulder. The officer informs you that as he entered the house, 3 men began shooting at him, and he fired upon them. You notice the officer is bleeding fron several locations about his arms and legs.
As a supervisor, what would be the most effective next step for you to take:
1) Inform the officer that he will receive a summmary punishment for failing to have his seatbelt on upon his arrival to the scene.
2) Inform the officer that he will receive a summary punishment for failing to notify OEMC of his weapon discharge in a timely manner.
3) You realize the officer is on BT 2520's log, return to your vehicle, and allow BT 2520 to take charge of the scene, once he leaves the station.

The bosses kids do not "get the test", that would be cheating. They get a special "study group" for the second part of the test. Its like in the academy when they read you the tests and then "wink, wink that would be a good answer". So in fact they don't really get the test, they are just told all the stuff thats on it and are told the answers so this way it can't be proved that they are given the test. This is FACT, just ask Matt, Wayne, Dan O'Shea, Christen and others that attended the invite only study group at 35th. for the last test. See you can't make 'em merit, then people might not "respect" them.

"Decease(d)" refers to the DEAD. "Desist" means "stop". "Forthwith" is commonly used in the NYPD for "immediately" (like yesterday).

Malcolm. Your comments might be taken seriously if you would kindly CEASE FORTHWITH in your bombastic use of "African-American" and "European-American".

"Black" and "white" are perfectly respectful monosyllables. Use them and you will be less likely to come across as a pompous asshole.

This is all according to the statues but of course trying to get a dick or felony review to approve it is another thing.

We can't answer your questiion until you tell us which watch you are referring to. If your 2510 on days, don't worry. You will be OK because he will never show up at the job nor will you hear from him. If the miracle of miracles does occur and he does show up,then the correct answer is 3. He's not going to stick around and do anything in the way of supervision when he can blow it off onto another Sgt. so I think that 3 would probably be a safe pick. If you are referring to 2510 on afternoons, then the patrolman could be in real trouble, no matter how heroic is actions are. Answer number 3 can be ruled out because 2510 3rd watch would NEVER waste or miss an opportunity to discipline a patrolman. If you are referring to 2510 on 1st watch then the correct answer is none of the above because he will be off running a seatbelt mission or DUI'ing somebody (maybe a copper) and be unable to show.

Notify OEC of shots fired at and by the police....a police officer is shot and unknown if any civilians. Get EMS immediately for gunshot victims and for the children. Above all get our copper to the hospital.

Set up a perimiter until CFD puts out the fire. Assign a paper car and wait until the field lieutenant/watch commander/street deputy arrive and take over this mess from you....which definately will happen with a copper shooting and being shot.

Before you go home, write up our copper for the Blue Star and Medal of Valor awards.

That's what I'd do.

Lock-up a senile seventy-five-year-old? A good sergeant, or any decent human being would not need to be guided by any general order and know what to do. And sometimes we need a good sergeant to make the call when the P.O. doesn't have a clue.

For instance, thirteen years ago in the midst of the first Bulls Championship riot I transported my two Black Souls turned burglars to the 011th District lock-up. Upon arrival I stood in line at the 011th District lock-up in back of two black policeman who brought in a black eighteen-year-old with Down Syndrome. When I asked the officers what he did they stated that they had reponded to call of looting inside a store in 010. The officers went on to say that as fifty to one hundred looters ran past them and fled the store they found the mentally retarded teenager standing alone inside and took him into custody. Nice pinch guys. I wish I was your sergeant then. I might be in a few months.

Don't worry, if they need to resort to desparation tactics like calling for help on their cell phone they should hit somewhere in the fifty to fifty-five percent correct range on Part 1. But according to all the crybaby hillbillies on this department, it's a deadly sin if the blacks, hispanics, arabs, or any other piece of shit hacks, play the game and move themselves up...no matter how underqualified they are.

I guess when the rest of the country looks at whites in the midwest as a bunch of inbred rednecks, the inferiority complex kicks in and the m/2's and f/2's on the CPD think they are actually more qualified than ALL minorities to get a promotion, simply because of the color of their skin---even though their I.Q. level equal a bag of rocks

Wake up motherfuckers, because there are actually MANY minorities that are going to get these spots on their OWN merit. Nevermind all the HACKS that get the spots for kissing ass.

This test did NOT make any sence. It is supposed to evaluate our knowledge of a supervisor's job function, but that wasn't the case. besides, there were NO questions DEALING WITH: weapons discharge, narcotics, terrorism, hazardous materials, onle 1 question on vehicle pesuits, only 1 question on school violence incidents. I felt like the test was written in a way that people who have never worked on the streets or done any police work, could pass this part of the test. This was supposed to be a TEST developed by people that SUPPOSEDLY had been observing SGT. performing their duties while on the streets or in the districts. About 75% of those questions did not have ANYTHING to do with the job of desk or street SGTS., WHO ARE THEY TRYING TO FOOL? Furthermore, did anyone ever see anybody in a patrol car observing a SGT.? That would be too much liability for the city! Besides, the good SGT's would probably tell them to GET THE FUCK OUT OF THEIR SQUAD CARS. GOOD LUCK TO ALL WHO REALLY STUDIED, AND WORK HARD, BECAUSE YOU REALLY DESERVE IT.

There were over 160 GO, SO, LB's etc. Make 3 Q's from each item. That comes out to 480 Q's.

Scantron it. No reference, no weighted. Just study your ass off and come with the answers in your head. They can give you the 3-4 hrs whatever. The results should be in 2-3 days later. First 500 that score the highest win. Period.

What is a Sgt supposed to do anyway? A Sgt is supposed to HAVE THE ANSWER READY WHEN YOU ASK HIM. Any asshole blue shirt can look up ILCS info or a GO. You don't need stripes to do that. Reference Q's: gone. not needed.

What is the point of the weighted questions?? Is the Dept admitting there is more than one right way to do something? No. There is only one truth. Not a 2 point or 1 point truth. If I have to call a Sgt over for help, I don't want him to give a 1 point answer if there is a 2 point answer to my question!

Again, one 500+ recall question test. No essays, no short answers, no reference--just know your shit!

D.S.O. 05-02 says upon discovery of clandestine lab you will immediately notify OEMC. OEMC will then notify NAGIS. This was tricky because D.S.O. 04-12-01 says immediate notification to NAGIS 24 hour desk. "Notify OEMC" was the more correct answer.

D.S.O 04-12-01 says notify RBT in all identity thefts!!

It is amazing to me how much bitching is done about the "merit" part of the promotion process. There is nothing you can do about the 30 % the city has. If most of you study as much as you bitch you might actually score well enough to make it on your own.

It's not just the 30% merit!!!
Those who work with/for (and family members of) the Subject matter experts and Senior subject matter experts are privy to the test questions before the test is given. This is not a secret.
Look at the clusters of high scorers from the prior exams, and their respective units.
Then there are the house mouses who instead of doing police work are being paid to study for the exam, with full knowledge from their bosses.
Finally, there are the clout bunnies in the units, who instead of doing their usual police work are being held down by thier bosses on station assignments for several hours a day. You'll see these kids in the back offices and lunch rooms studying for the test.

How the hell does the no-clout working copper compete with this?

Put another way, out of 5000 coppers taking the test, they will promote the 300 or so.
100 will be "merit", so you must score in the top 200.
Keep in mind that there will be AT LEAST 200 coppers who already have the test questions.

30% merit tells the rest of the world that 1/3 of cpd supervisors are incompetent...for promotions there should be 0% merit promotions...seriously we aren't being tested on nuclear physics...were taking a test on shit were suppose to know...these general orders aren't there for nothing...it's how we do our job...if you can't even do your job correctly why get promoted...i know that the elite will always get tests ahead of time...that is the nature of the beast...and all the house mouse sexy sluts get to study on department time...that leaves all us idiots working a beat car stuck with handling stupid he ate the last piece of chicken domestics...all we can do is try to study harder than everyone else...and if a working cop gets promoted i'll raise my glass to him.{note i didn't say her} not too many females on the street....all we can do is enjoy having a job that pays us....my friend has a masters degree and only makes $35,000........we have it a lot better than most people....where ever you go in human society there will always be favorites....."clout" it's a part of human nature and it will never change....if you made boss wouldn't your team compose of guys you know....

If the test were on nuclear physics I would be in the top 5.
If part 2 includes questions pertaining to police work, I should do fairly well.
If the test includes questions pertaining to supervising police work, I hope I will do well. Should the test actually measure one's knowledge of polioce work, and one's ability to supervise, and I did poorly, I would be content that the position is not for me (at this time).
HOWEVER, when the first question on part 2 is "which unit or department should be contacted to repair the Xerox machine?"......

Sgt's test was pretty easy, but we all know that the suck asses will get by. For instance, the back stabbing, suckhole pj from the a/4 gun team. He is so far up the lt's butt. he is the one we have to watch out for. let's studing for the second part of the test so that we get good supervisors out ther on the streets.

yup i can think of alot of good supervisors that did not last long in patrol (Vail, Sanchez, BLopez, Stubie011, Stack011) we dont need the jaycox types to supervise. Beside you cant find him, he's lost in the lt's underware.
