A Guy Who Gets It

Everyone ought to read this article. We thought we made a few points in our little post about why the Virginia jury (and the American justice system) failed in the Moussaoui case. Mark Steyn in the Sun Times completely buries those who think this should be a "Law Enforcement" action rather than a War.
  • "America, you lose," said Zacarias Moussaoui as he was led away from the court last week.

Hard to disagree. Not just because he'll be living a long life at taxpayers' expense. He'd have had a good stretch of that even if he'd been "sentenced to death," which in America means you now spend more years sitting on Death Row exhausting your appeals than the average "life" sentence in Europe. America "lost" for a more basic reason: turning a war into a court case and upgrading the enemy to a defendant ensures you pretty much lose however it turns out. [emphasis added - SCC]
Go read the whole thing. It'll change your way of thinking of the "War on Terror."

Just want to get people thinking here. Cleveland P.D. is taking the city to court over their residency issue (same as ours, have to live in city). What the heck is our FOP doing?? It always seems to me like our fop is johnny come lately on everything and just jumps on the bandwagon from other cities initiatives. For instance the milwaukee time due thing (it's our time.. we should b able to use it whenever WE want to). Why isn't our FOP on the forefront with these issues. We are a huge dep't with lots of members and due's money, why aren't they in court fighting for our right to live outside the city?? Makes you wonder when u step back and think, really what have they done/are they doing for us?

I agree with that last poster. I think most of us would agree that the top of our all our wish lists is to get rid of the 6 day work week and the residency issue. Why in the world are we not allowed to live where ever we want. It's unbelievable to me that in this day and age they can still get away with that. So, that being said, what has the FOP done on those issues?? I'll give them that they tried that pilot program with the different work schedule... but what the heck? What happened? Sounded like everyone liked it. Why is our union doing nothing on this! I think everyone would support the union more if they actually fought for us, instead to me it seems like they just roll over. What are we paying them for? They have not done anything on the residency issue. I think they're playing the ol' game of wait and see what happens with other cities fights, but that's no way to gain support of your troops. Get in there, get in the fight. Do the job we elected you to do. Do what you promised us when you came around campaigning. Fight for us!

Alot of people are gonna get screwed if that residency rule is changed....I agree with getting rid of the 6day work week cause its killing us but, people have time vested into their homes, communities, kids in school. Kinda hard to just get up and leave. You gonna get what you are asking for your house? I think not. If you think its cheaper living in the burbs then you are dreaming.....you'll get killed on property tax....so lets watch what we wish for. Be safe everyone, always keep your head up and eyes open.

Perception is what counts in our world today. Had we put that prick motherfucker to death, his followers would have placed him on the martyr's pedestal. He doesn't deserve that. He was willing to murder innocent people for some fucked up interpretation of his religion. No where in the Koran is suicide tolerated. You have assholes with their own political agenda who talk stupid assholes into blowing themselves up for the promise of "martyrdom" and whatever else nonsense they can feed their feeble minds. If it's such a great idea, why don't they do it themselves?

Our society believes in an "eye for an eye." If this was strictly an American problem, I would understand. Unfortunately, we're dealing with a situation that is in the court of worldwide public opinion. Therefore, fuck this asshole! Don't give him shit, don't give him the privilege of joining "martyrs" or any thing even closely resembling that.

He's in his 30's......he will probably live another 40 years at least. Let him rot in Colorado in solitary confinement. I don't care how dedicated he is to his bullshit calling, time will wear him down. Time will show him that he was duped and that he's a dumbshit. Time will march on, life will march on, and all the while he's left behind. Good...fuck him. In 20 or so years we'll be hearing about how he's "rehabilitated" or some other nonsense. Fuck him! He'll rot in Colorado and that's OK with me. My 2¢ on the subject.

You are just being selfish. Your house value is going to go down, your kids schools, etc... . Well what about all the new people coming on the job? Are to suffer and try to scrape up 300k to buy your little fixer upper in mt. greenwood b/c that's the only place they can afford. That's a bullshit, selfish reason. I'd gladly pay the extra property tax in a nice suberb, then i would send my kids to free schools that aren't filled with animals. You just don't want the residency lifted b/c you know you wont be able to sell your crappy little house for a super inflated price. Quit being selfish and look at the bigger picture. You must be a complete idiot if you would rather have someone tell you that you can only live in a certain boundry instead of wherever YOU choose. You my friend are a selfish moron.

I'm not selfish 1st off, 2nd...if you think houses in the burbs are cheaper then.....I'd rather be selfish then STUPID! Last time I looked Chicago was looking pretty dam cheap compared to the burbs. And its not about having a crappy house so dont go guessing moron and I dont live in Mt stinkwood either. I'll agree that it would be nice to live in the burbs, I'd be stupid not to, but it just isnt gonna happen and too many people are gonna get fucked! F'n 2yr rookie, you wanna live in the burbs then be a suburban cop.

How bout the FOP hammering the city for better pay, tax breaks, lift some of borders so our kids can go to a decent public school.....cause they are there or tax breaks for sending kids to Catholic/private schooling. You wanna hang your hat on the burbs then you are the moron. There are better things our union can and should befighting for.

I'm not a rookie and I own a nice home. The residency rule is still unfair. Your arguments are just a cover up for your fear of losing value on your home. That in itself is not a valid argument. There is no reasonable legal or practical reason that we should be required to reside in the city. I pray that your son comes home in box Chevy with dubs and your daughter is knocked up by a nice young lad named Demetrious. Then you will realize that some things in life are more important than the value of your raised ranch in Garcia Ridge.

Lets argue then if you are so quick to wanna move outta the city then who do think is gonna buy your house? Who is gonna wanna live where you are at? You guessed it.......cause they will be the only ones who'll be able to afford it. How about keeping your/our neighborhoods the way they are. I'm sorry man, but I had to work and save a whole lot to have my house and I'll be dammned if you want me to feel sorry for a couple of rookies coming on the job! Hate to tell you........ass....but its hard for everyone out there! And your comments about the caprice and demetrious would get your teeth knocked in if we were face to face but we'll never know right? Here's an easy solution: why dont you move...I'll buy your house for whats its worth ($140..150K) I'll bulldoze it down and make my self and new one and when you are sitting in the burbs with all of the ghetto rats from the projects and where ever they came from (cause you know thats where they are going) you can be happy to know that I'll be living juust fine. Like I said earlier..........you are just a 2yr rookie and a MORON.

Get real, worry about your pension, health care and prescriptions, because you can live anywhere when you retire, but you'll need the money to do it.

You still miss the point,it should be your choice. If you have nothing to fear, because the burbs are no better, why are you so afraid of this becoming a reality? If your neighborhood is such a great value then you have no worries. Admit that the reason you want residency in this city is because of your greed. My house is worth double what I paid for it less than 10 years ago but I still believe that new guys and gals coming on the job should be able to raise their family in a decent home in a decent neighborhood. Then again, I dont live in a neighborhood of extremely overvalued shacks where the only "true value" is the fear of the element. That piece of turd you bought for 130k in 1999 and put that ugly ass addition on....is still an ugly turd. No one should be strong armed into buying it when you retire. Whatever the taxes are in the burbs, they ain't more than it costs for 12 years of private school. Uh-oh here come the teeth-kickers.

We are sooo fucked beyond belief! Oh, but don’t you guy’s and girls worry, we are the city that works and remember all our money that was given to us by the Government for counter terrorism went to cameras on all the major department stores on the magnificent mile and those beautiful flower pots that allows the “Shit Heads” to get away when POLICES chase them down!! My $$! and I knew I had to live here......so I'll say it again why did'nt you sign up to be a suburban police officer? You would'nt have to go through stuff like this right?! And yeah I'll tell you to eat shit cause when you make comments like your previous post you deserve to! Speaking of Virginia and terrorism, some jagoffs just stormed a Fairfax Co. police station and shot and killed one detective and wounded two others.

One offender dead per early media reports.

I left Chicago so I never would have to live in this environment again. You want to talk about scary for ordinary citizens (me! now)? Scary is thinking that the police won't be available in the neighborhood tonight because they are out shooting it out with terrorists who just stormed their station.

I don't care if Huberman or whoever gives you a disaster plan. If you are a sergeant and you are reading this, you should give your troops a default disaster plan and rally point.

This shit is real, and its fairly well terrifying to hear.

If they let us move out, I wouldn't. You talk about the "me" generation....your the one so worried about "your investment" . Not quite an investment if you bought in '85 or were you a realestate guru who predicted that the prices for homes would triple?Your the typical greedy, bitter motherfucker who posts on this blog. Yes, we all knew we would have to live here but that doesn't mean we shouldn't try and get as much as we can. Lotta places for a suburbanite like you to live here in Chicago. Unfortunately we are'nt making $300K a year. The station house was never under seige.

Like what????? How much more money you think they are gonna give us to do a job that a trained ape can do? Factor in the cost of living and we are one of the best paid big city departments in the country. Insurance? Any arbitrator is gonna keep pushing the cost of that up. They are gonna compare what we get to the private sector and say "Are you fucking crazy?". More vacation time? You get way more than most working Americans. And don't tell me how stressful your job is, save that for the relatives at Thanksgiving or the chicks at the tavern.
Residency is the ultimate quality of life issue. It deals with $, family and freedom of choice and if you think the city is forcing it upon us in your best interest, you should get your head examined.
