Stroger Decision?

As reported in the Tribune, Sun Times and Channel 7, Cook County Board President John Stroger is (more likely than not) completely incapable of running for office, let alone serving out his current term due to the massive damage suffered in a stroke. It's unfortunate that this information didn't come to light in time to help Forrest Claypool win the primary battle, but now residents of Cook County are likely to be saddled with a candidate they had no voice in choosing but was rather appointed by one of the more corrupt organizations to grace the northeastern portion of Illinois.

VOTE FOR TONY PERAICA for President of the Cook Co. Board come November.

He's the only option to rid ourselves of these machine Democrats.

A vote for Peraica is a vote for the Croatian mafia. Most of his law partners have been disbarred and he's hidding a bunch of croat illegals in his various buildings on the southside. Blacks won't get the jobs but the county will be overrun with croatian janitors that nobody can understand.

shame on the media for calling an armed offender a "victim.

Hey you media retards get something straight.....when your house is broken into and you are not home .thats a burlary not a robbery and when a scumbag points a gun at police he is an armed offender not a victim.

the media should be ashamed of themselves

No we should be ashamed of ourselves for not taking corrective action. Here's one for the Irish gladhanders at FOP: How about identifying the sponsors, local or otherwise, of the news programs. Start a letter writing campaign informing the sponsors that we and our families will stop buying their products because of the unfair treatment Chicago Police Officers routinely recieve on these programs. This is what a proactive FOP would do instead of riding around on buses waving hankys at the Police Memorial and getting piss drunk afterward. Remember when are contract talks stalled for nearly three years? I had a great idea. Go out to Park Ridge, Bensenville, or another town getting fucked over by daleys O'Hare land grab and rent billboard space visible from the tollways adjacent to the airport. How about this: "Welcome to the murder capital of America! And Daley won't pay his police..." Embarrass the little Irish fuck. Do the same with the media. And remember, don't tell them anything-except for Jackie Bange...

City grappling with pension fund shortfalls

The Daley administration has opened an uncomfortable dialogue with union leaders about a problem that threatens to saddle future generations of Chicago taxpayers with a debt they can't handle: underfunded city pension funds

...

The only thing certain is that something's got to give. If nothing changes, the police and firefighter pension funds will run out of money in 20 and 23 years, respectively.

If any of you were able to speak and understand the English language, you would realize that the media are using the correct terms. The person who receives a gunshot IS the victim of the shooting regardless of whether he is shot justifiably or not. He may be the offender in another incident such as a robbery or resisting or even shooting at the police but as soon as he get shot, he becomes a victim of a shooting incident.

Nobody is trying to say that he is innocent and nobody is trying to say that he should not have been shot. The police use different terms because of our report writing and charging purposes. In the eyes of the police a person shot by the police is generally the offender because he did something to justify being shot. However, the English language considers a person who is the recipient of a gunshot wound as a gunshot victim regardless of the reason why that person was shot.

As one who left before the pension vested, I can attest to what you are giving up by moving to a "defined contribution" plan versus a "defined benefits" plan.

Rather than having an unlimited pool to take care of you from 50, 55, 60 or whatever with defined benefits until whatever day you die, you will instead go to a limited pool with resources you have to conserve over their lifetime (your retirement).

Huge difference. Its one of those things where after the mortgage is paid, you try and find every way possible to put money into tax-free retirement funds. And compared to quitting and drawing out starting at 55 or whatever in the current pension system, its WAY more likely that you would move to a second job up through social security age, just to avoid depleting the defined contribution pool which you will draw from.

You guys can complain about the salary, the clout, the danger, the stress etc. all you want. In my view, the pension is the one GREAT benefit that you have that isn't enjoyed (anymore) by the great mass of workers in other industries, including a decent portion of the federal government now.

This is the big one guys. Fight this tooth and nail, because without the pension, theres nothing left.

I've got 15 on and 10 left before I can start taking payments. I always planned on leaving at 50 and enjoying life...looks like I'll be working at Home Depot instead.

But as long as the Aldermen get their raise....

can't you roll over your police pensions into another pension, without penalty?

has anyone consulted with a financial planner, etc to see if you could do this, so you don't lose your pensions?

this city absolutely sucks

6/04/2006 12:56:00 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

12:56, I rolled over my unvested contributions when I left long before vesting. Put it this way, the unvested contributions which were returned were the equivalent of about 1/15th of my cumulative earnings while I worked there.

Which is to say, if I worked for 30 years and, for whatever reason never vested (like, say, bankruptcy), I was returned a proportion which would be equivalent to 2 years salary for rolling over purposes.

It IS that scary.

I left for a MUCH higher paying job in an entirely different field, the difference between what I got after X years and what my friends and family are promised after 20-30 prompted me to realize the value of the pension. Its greatly disproportionate to your salary.

In fact, if you work 30 from 25-55 yoa, and then pension out for 30 from 55-85 yoa, I'd suggest that you have drawn out an additional 80-100% of your salary in retirement, without working an extra day.

You will NEVER see that in the private sector, and its something y'all need to fight tooth and nail to keep. It is the ONE great benefit of the garbage job.

to 10:24...dear mr. noah webster, please feel free to not grace us illiterate police officers with your views. if a bad guy gets shot by the police or a victim of the crime perpetrated by said bad guy...he is not a victim. he is an offender who brought on his or her own demise due to his or her actions. you can attempt to play on words, but, a victim in my eyes is a person who was the receiver of a violent or criminal action done unto him without provocation. you can see this any way that you want, but, anyone shot by the police for causing the police to fear for his own safety or that of another IS an offender. there are no two ways about it. so, please keep your liberal views to yourself and your tree-hugging protestor buddies. if you are the police, you should be ashamed of yourself for these idiotic views. how's that ? not bad for an illiterate police officer. go back to the suburbs...jerkoff

Please be warned that if we allow a two tiered pension system, with lesser benefits for new hires we run the risk of having it shoved up our ass when we’re retired. Because the new guys will be running the FOP (or what ever passes for our barging agent) when we are old and retired. They’ll say that we didn’t watch out for them when we had the chance so fuck those old retired guys, we’ll let the city cut their benefits so we can get what we need now!

Not only do they give away our pension money but also our hard earned dues go to pay Mark $'s Donahue 176 k a year plus his top board guys total making over 1.5 mil combined. Nice for a bunch of high school grad, hang up on the members when they call guys.
FOP also used our money to endorse their pension fund candidate Steve Robbins and the retired guys running for the pension board.
Go to an FOP meeting stand up and be heard! Demand Pension reform or at the very least scream bloody murder until the city meets it's obligations. The problem is NOT THE FUND it is the CITY NOT WILLING TO FULLFILL IT'S CONTRIBUTIONS!!!! FOP FORGIVING THE DEBT!!!! SO THEY COULD GET RE-ELECTED

You're right, Mr. Anonymous, so what, it's only 0.6%! Why don't we just give 0.6% away every couple of years or so, who cares, it's only 0.6%! The whole point is that we were promised a lot more - like 80% - and we were lied to and then the FOP decided to forgive a debt that should not have been forgiven by them, at all. Whether it is 0.6% forgiven every so often, or underfunding each year by the City, the point is that we are slowly getting screwed. When the issue was raised about the pension fund forgiveness, everyone just looked away and said, "oh well", even though Harej and Hallinan and their team tried to tell you that it was the wrong thing to do.

Here is the big problem, boys and girls, Donahue's people like to divide everyone. They did it with the patromen and the detectives and they would like to do it now with the retirees and the active personnel. The retirees do care what happens - they put their time in, long before you could even put your baby butt into a baseball cap. They have been lied to many times by the City, their experience is useful and worth listening to, not tossing aside.

Those who have their pensions vested should be caring, as well, since by the time of vesting, most of those will be remaining on the job, until 20 years on or 50 y.o.a.

As for you youngsters, a lot of things that the FOP could be doing for you, could be done by retirees who have time on their hands and who are willing to do a good job.

Just like people voting for Stroger who was already a "veggie" at the time of the election, far too many young coppers have their heads up their asses thinking how important they are and voting for nitwits, whether it be the people in power - municipal, county or statewide, or FOP.

Well, sorry for the rant, but as long as this went off topic, let me add a bit here and say that I think SCC might be a sergeant who sits on the FOP board with the last name beginning with an "M".
