The scenario (via Channel 5 News):
- A Chicago couple who lost their children in the fire are suing the city to obtain the 911 records, saying some calls for help were ignored.
- The judge will listen to oral arguments from both sides Friday. The city of Chicago is seeking a protection order, saying the release of the 911 records is a threat to security because they could potentially be used to overwhelm the city's 911 response by targeting certain police districts at specific times. The city wants to keep the records confidential, but the family's lawyer disputes the city's claim, suggesting the city's real motive is to conceal that the 911 center is understaffed and mismanaged.
The family even set up a website that has been mentioned in our comments section on numerous occasions - www.911failure.com. The decision?
- A judge has ordered the shutdown of a Web site reporting on 911 mistakes, arguing that it might be a threat to the security of the city. Channel 2.
- A Web site that posted detailed information about the city of Chicago's 9-1-1 Center was ordered shut down Friday. A Cook County judge ruled that 9-1-1 call taking information cannot be displayed on the internet because it could threaten national security. Channel 7.
This is likely to be overturned on appeal. And we'd support anything that shows the City is constantly trying to do MORE with FEWER trained personnel. Just look at our Department - chronically understaffed and unable to properly meet the demands for service. And don't even get us started on the "mismanagement" part of that statement.

How can the 911 center not be mismanaged? Look who is in charge! An ex-gold star drunk, a HDO hire the third who barely can complete full sentences and the mayor's wonder boy who is still pulling the strings. Just had time due denied because of under staffing on the watch. The reason 2 cars need to be detailed to Garfied park. Oh well my time was denied! Why is the department taking away officers from tax paying districts to address crime there? What is SOS and TRU doing? Its time the media looks into the true numbers we are at and do a story on the numbers we should be at.
Each district is allowed to employ a number of officers per persons who live there RIGHT? Where did all the cops go ????????????????
Sick of being cheated
Overwhelm targeted police districts is sort of a funny assertion.
The 9-1-1 calls are centralized, so its not that a particular police district's call center would have to be overwhelmed. It would be the entire city's call center that would have to be overwhelmed at once (i.e., all police districts). They would need a lot of terrorists making prank calls. Nah, this can't be what they are talking about.
Could the assertion be that they overwhelm the call center by giving high priority calls to addresses within certain geographic boundaries? Uhm, that already happens daily in many districts where backlogs are declared. We are already overwhelmed, but they suggest it would be more dangerous when the terrorists do it? How?
What they need to do is have field supervisors who can be both the police and a boss. Field supervisors need to be pushed to recognize when call volumes are out of control, and 19-Paul classes of calls en masse. Do paper over the phone etc.
The city's whole defense is absolutely absurd. They talk as if terrorist's are going to do something that the exempts themselves haven't. Terrorists don't need to overwhelm the system or a district with phone calls. The Democrats have already allowed this to happen on a daily basis.

The city is gonna get whats coming and they (The 911 Center) hopefully will get the tune up it needs. My wife called 911 last year when my 10 yr old son fell off his bike. His friends rode back to our house to tell my wife my son was laying in the street down the block with a bone sticking out of his arm. My wife ran there, called 911. She told them I was a PO at work and that she needed an ambulance. My wife doesn't drive. The call taker told her to see if she could get a neighbor to bring him to the hospital. No ambulance was dispatched. A stranger driving by (turns out to be off duty CFD) takes them to the hospital.
But yet we get an ambulance for every drunk we find passed out or fell down on the street.
As for our response time, how many times have you arrived to a job only to have the caller ask what took so long, claiming to have called 15 minutes ago. I show my pdt and inform them I was 3 blocks away and just got the job, but yet its a slow day. Why does it take so long to get the job out. We have sgt's on the street looking up pending jobs that have not been givin out yet, and yet, there is no radio traffic. What the fuck!
It would also be nice if the call taker would follow the script and take an extra minute to get more information to the police to work with. Nothing sucks more than getting dispatched to a domestic where the ticket says disturbance with the husband. No further information. No clothing description, no mention of weapons, drugs, alcohol. We might just pass the guy on the way to the job and never know it.
As for Emergency response in a disaster, were screwed. Teflon Mayor shows off all the high tech equipment down town and claims were ready for a major disaster, but we still have radios that loose the charge in 5 hours and cant transmit in a high rise or hospital. PDT's out of range on a regular basis in the same spots for years. They still cant get that fixed. And last, we dont have enough cops on the street because on top of the lack of man power on the payroll, a big chunk of our cops are out doing details at all the parades, fest's and sports games providing traffic control. (Good use of highly trained police officers). We take officers out of the district to go to the west side only to babysit the animals. There are sometimes so many cops, were stepping over eachother. An speaking of the animals, remember, there all watching for us with camcorder or camera in hand. Waiting for that big payout buy the city with the deep pockets. Be careful out there. Keep your homes and family intact. Think safety for yourself and fellow officers first. Let the animals eat each other alive. Less trouble for us.
I have to say, I have informed my family that if anything ever happens to me on the job. Get the 911 tapes. Get a lawyer, make sure all the procedures were followed properly. One lazy slip up by our 911 center and at least my family can collect. And Im sure they will seeing the way thing are run here.

Yes the communications center is sorely understaffed. CAPS cannot be implemented if your district has no rapids. If you came home to find your house burglarized, called 911 and you didn't see a car for 3 hrs, I would imagine you would have had to call the center at least 8 -10 times looking for the police, now just picture hundreds waiting and calling, waiting and calling, the field po's are not to be blamed, mgt obviously believes you can handle 10 jobs an hour.

I've said it before and I'll say it again- THERE IS NO SUPERVISION ON THIS DEPARTMENT! If sergeants and Lts would call the dogs on their lazy bs, we would have a lot less backlogs, and most likely there will be enough police to go around. Good thing I stayed in the house. It was my day off. I went to court in the morning, then came home and had a few beers to relax and enjoy my 7th working fucking day.

Forget it what you did was right. All you can do is protect your family and retire when the time comes. Nobody on this job gives a shit about you. Remember years ago the off duty PO on the southside went outside to a disturbance? Asshole caved his head in with a brick I believe. Any of the heroes on this job remember him or his family? Once again this department is sending 2 units from each district to Garfield Park to babysit the animals.
If we had proper staffing this wouldnt be occurring every Friday, saturday, & Sunday nights. But because the animal cannot live peacefully like normal individuals, more Police presence is needed to contain the animal.
We have to babysit the animal leaving the other non animal districts with less Police Coverage.
I love my job. I hate this city.

In the appropriate circumstance, we all would step in and do the right thing, especially if violence and personal injury were a factor. I agree that we should not accept burglary to auto, or any other property crime as an acceptable way of life, like those in other communities do, but in his circumstance, the decision to call 911 and request police service was correct. With or without the gun, five on one are never good odds, even if you are Joe Jock. It's not worth an ass kickin or worse, and definitely not worth shooting one of the dogs; in this case, that would only cause undue grief. We should be more offended by the lack of police service we get in the communities we live in. 008, 016 and 022 are grossly understaffed and cars are regularly pulled out of beats with "less" REPORTED crime. They have put cars from the West end of 008 down for the tour and assigned them to write curfews all night on the East end. These are beats that are the size of the entire Englewood District. Where is the protection for our families? That's what should offend us! I strongly you, you families, your wife, girlfriend, neighbors and passerby’s call 911 to report EVERY crime, suspicious person, suspicious circumstance or act of unacceptable behavior that has been deemed offensive to OUR society. No reported crime means no need for police service. Is that and issue on Beat 1132, 725 or 531? I don't think so. Demand the service boys and girls! And make the right choices. Be the police, it’s what we do, but do it wisely. If you need to engage off-duty then do it, we expect it of you and need to be there for our neighbors because the on-duty police can't. And since most of OUR neighbors are the other coppers calling for service and not getting it we need to look out for us too!

i responed to a call of a voice in the rear yard of a house on 1613 beat the other nite around nidnight,i came from a long way, belmont/austin..i spoke to the owner of the house a ODPO..he heard voice in the rear yard,we checked it out with a gang sgt.who also showed up..after looking into several yards and then driving around to see if anyone was wallking in the area..we found no one..we waited for about 5-more minutes and no 1613..so the sgt coded the job and left...this person on that beat should have his/her name on this blog...don't say that the sgt that arrived should have did something...its not his car.and he did clear the job to make sure they did'nt milk it and not show. i know it wont be hard to find out all about that call and the police that did show. BUT WHO WAS THE COPS THAT DIDNT SHOW?????FUCK THEM.
I'm a Tact Sgt on the south side & have 20 yrs on this silly job. All but the 2 yrs (as a tact Sgt) were in a district, in uniform on a watch. I agree with the earlier posts. The watches need to be fully staffed. I pretend to be no hero. The watches are what makes or breaks this deprtment! I was charged with a misdemeanor violation of ILCS 5/32-5 (impersonatring a public officer). I even helped the stupid fucks with the paperwork on their bullshit "arrest".
After firing "attorney" Richard Brzeczek, in an amended complaint filed in pending 42 U.S.C. 1983 litagation (Northen v. City of Chicago, et al.) , it noted that the bogus arrest was dropped by the DuPage Co. SAO and the record was expunged pursuant to Illinois law.
Later in an opinion (See 126 F.3d 1024) of the Seventh Circuit, Chief Judge Richard Posner scolded the City, terming the basis for the pretextual arrest as "cockeyed". I ultimately prevailed and completed the purchase of the Glock from Ray O'Herron.
My gratitude to Velez and the other assholes for the bogus arrest in retaliation for exercising my First Amendment rights.
