Drive around what ever dist you work in and look at the grade schools. New ones have been built and many of the old ones have had additions put on them. There is a large group of youths who will be turning into teenagers and adults in the next couple of years. Crime Is down because of the fact the male population of young adults is low at the moment. this will change soon and when it does your college degree (Oh, I also have a degree and 20 years on and it has NEVER helped me catch a criminal) will not mean squat to Dude and Juan. I worked with an old timer when I first came on and he told me that there is one universal language and the is PAIN, everybody understands that. We DO NOT hire people with college degrees.
WE HIRE people with 60 credit hours of college education.
That means the credit could be in Cartoon Reading 101 yet it still counts to get hired by the CPD!
Funkin right! Require a four year degree to get on. Unlike our fathers who obtained a quality education at Lane, Taft, Ignatius, St. Phillips, etc. your contemporary HS diploma is worthless. It certainly was something of value to the Vietnam vets, but has become meaningless to subsequent generations. If you didn't get a degree between high school and coming on the job what were you doing? Getting drunk all day at your park district job with the rest of the bustouts while waiting to take white welfare to the next level and become a policeman? A degree isn't a panacea, however, coupled with a work ethic, common sense, and a desire to do real police work it is invaluable. I see a zillion case reports every week and I can't beleive the shit I read. Fuckin retards. So are many of the bosses. Beleive me the vitriole I read hear is finely polished verse compared to what gets written on most GOCR's. So I know it's not you guys turning in this shit. The college degree is OK but what are you getting educated in. Their degrees from Louis and Roosevelt did not help their thinking process, then again they were given their degrees as were most of 1121 S. State./ 35th st.

As I said a degree isn't a panacea, and it doesn't supplant courage and common sense. However it complements the other attributes you refer to. What is this visceral disdain for education? Why do you feel the need to dumb the job down? Hasn't the merit, or McMerit promotion policy already done that? By your illogic a high school only requirement should make a better MD, accountant, or lawyer! I'm fifty, third genertaion on the job, and was told to get a degree or get kicked out of the house. And I worked fifty hours a week in a factory while going to a real college. My partner was high school only and then off to the Marines. But we clicked and the car produced. But the times have changed. I know some brilliant, educated coppers who could easily dismantle any GD or King at the slightest provocation. And I know plenty of high school only guys that wouldn't get within ten blocks of the old Rockwell Gardens.

A degree or credit's currently get's your foot in the door of this job and in limited mgmt. position's. A degree is not needed for police work where you can learn on the job. This is not brain surgery. End all, a degree is to your personal benefit for potential or possible promotion's, and within the private sector. A degree does not make the officer. Degree's are being pumped up through out sourcing where numerous job's are and these job's and position's are no longer in this country. Why do so many wear veil's and hood's over their eye's. It’s big business. Unfortunatey, the by-product is people who think they are smart. Years ago it was known that everyone did not belong in college; today, the more the merrier. The Wall Street Journal opined that those receiving a college degree today have an education equivalent to a high school diploma from the post World War II era.
Strangely, I agree with the Wall Street Journal as to the college education today being the equivalent of high school education yesterday.
Back to substance, you know what is to blame? Student loans and the massive entitlement mentality of YOUR "me" generation.
The "G" provides the money as a loan to a bunch of kids who have no fucking idea how difficult it will be to pay back 60K to 150K in student loans. The more loans you provide the more the schools charge in tuition, the more "colleges" that come into existence, and the larger the student bodies at almost every level of education.
Next thing you know, everybody is expected to have a college degree. In my crowd its almost entirely graduate and professional degrees these days. F&(*C&*
And high schools? Why should they care about educating anyone? The "G" will give a "loan" to anyone who wants it, there is a college out there that will accept anyone no-questions-asked, and the Democrats are in the pocket of the teachers' unions.

All right Mr. Logic and Reasoning, riddle me this.
Officer A has graduated from an academic high school sometime in the 1960’s.
Officer B has graduated from a four year college sometime in the last ten years.
It is agreed that the quality, depth, and intellectualism of the two educations is the same. The only difference is the amount of time and money invested to arrive at the same place.
Based on these hypotheses, is it reasonable and logical to assume that one education is superior to the other or that one officer is superior to the other based on their respective formal educations?
