Do We Have To Repeat It?

Two big tragedies this weekend. First, the six kids dying in the apartment fire up north. Tribune, Sun Times, Channel 2, Channel 5, Channel 7 coverage. We don't mean to cause anyone more anguish, but this just HAS to be repeated:
  • Smoke Detectors save lives.
We don't know the specifics of this fire yet. We don't know if there were issues with where the fire started, what kind of exits were in the building, what was the condition of the apartment. But any firefighter or fire safety official will tell you, having a working smoke detector give you such an incredible edge in surviving a fire, that it is no wonder that they are required by just about every municipality in the nation. Get em, check em, have em.

The second tragedy involves one of our own. We can't find news coverage of it anywhere, but as noted in the comments sections, an off duty copper was killed this weekend around 67th and Pulaski. Some reports are that he was ejected from the vehicle. Though we don't have specifics, this also bears repeating:
  • Seatbelts Save Lives
Again, we aren't speculating as to whether or not he had a seatbelt on. We aren't making any judgments one way or the other. We certainly aren't Monday morning quarterbacking. But whenever something like this occurs, it pays to remind everyone to be careful out there and wear the damn seatbelt. We spend 10 or more hours a day attached to a car - the tour plus travel to and from work and personal time. That's more than a lot of truckers do. We've been in more that a few wrecks, and in at least one of them, we know the seatbelt saved us from some serious damage.

That's all. Preaching over with.

I found a story on chicagotribune.com it was attached to another accident story but I am going to edit his name out....He was a great guy....G-d bless him, and my prayers to his family.

In an unrelated accident, a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle in the 6700 block of South Cicero Avenue, according to a spokesman for the Cook County medical examiner's office.

The pedestrian, TH, 29, of the 3900 block of West 104th Street, was pronounced dead at about 7:50 a.m. Sunday in the Stein Institute, the spokesman said.

Details about the accident were not immediately available Sunday.

Don't know any details of the copper in 8 tragedy, but there was another near-tragedy in a similar vein last night: 10th Dist sober copper on motorcycle vs. drunk female in van. He's good, in good spirits and is VERY lucky. Gonna be off for a LONG while, broken bones and the like. 12th Dist and Canine did a GREAT job on it and had fantastic response, but no word as of yet if the offender is in custody.
God speed the deceased and his family.

I graduated the academy with that police officer and knew him from the neighborhood and through mutual friends. He was the nicest most personable guy I have ever met. He will be missed dearly

Throw the book at these Pollack shithead wanna-bes. Fuckin' drag racing. Take all their/their parents 6 flats and stick 'em in the joint. No doubt they came away unscathed and will soon be joking about the incident with their idiot friends at Studio 31.

Seen too many times the young polski driving like an asshole down archer.

The accident involving Tim Harts occured at 67th Cicero not 67th Pulaski, like it really matters. Ironically, their is a POD Camera recently installed there, not sure if it views Cicero or the train yards but it's there..hello any M.A.I.S. Detectives reading the board? He was ejectedfrom his vehicle when it was struck by a couple of Polish kids flying northbound on Cicero down the bridge in their Mustang at estimates of 80-100 M.P.H. Tim was ejected from his vehicle through the passenger side of his car. His shoes and his weapon were found inside, so it was one hell of an impact. Their was some report it was a pedestrian struck, but that was wrong. Terrible tragedy, may he rest in peace...

In regarding TH, Ive known him for quite some time. He was a gem, always laughing and cracking jokes. He loved his job and was so excited when he made it to his present unit. He loved hanging with his very closely knit group of friends(PALS). There aren't words to explain how his friends and family must be feeling. My prayers go to all of them. He will be sadly sadly missed.

RE: fire on marshfield. I'm sure the building owner isn't connected. HUGE building pays 7,000 in property tax a year. Unbelievable PIN 11-30-216-014-0000.

He was'nt a pedestrian. He was turning to go e/b on 67th, car with 20 yr old who had been drinking coming down hill going n/b, bout 50-60 mph, struck Tim's vehicle on front passenger panel so hard that he then proceeded to hit two light poles. He was ejected during some point from which impact we dont know. Drivers side was not hit. No news on it, but if it were reveresed, say off duty po stikes vehicle, and kills driver, would make the front page but since it was a 20 yr old who isnt even legal drinking age, or maybe not even legal citizen, no news coverage. I am just venting, I have lost a friend that I have known since he was 13 years old.

wmI didn't know T.H. very long, just since he came to 001 with the dismantling of Housing. He impressed me as being a worker and just a really nice guy with a mega-watt smile. I think the thing that impressed me most was when I learned that he volunteered his time to coach a baseball team at St. Christina, even though he had no kids or family on the team. My prayers are with his family and friends. What a tragic loss.

It saddens me deeply to hear of this very tragic and unnecessary death.

Unfortunately, I didn't have the pleasure of knowing T.H. but from what I have been hearing, he was a stand up guy.

God bless him and his family. They will be in my thoughts and prayers!

Stay safe my brothers and sisters.

Rest in peace Tim.

Being an accident victim that nearly lost his life to a motorist who had no business being behind the wheel I am asking all my fellow officers to do one thing.

Start to write tickets. Especially red lights and anything else that we normally watch happen but keep on driving.

I am not a company man but until we start to hammer these assholes it will not stop. I had a guy fly by me on the eisenhower while I was in a marked unit going to 001 on a prisoner transport and when I pulled his dumb ass over on the expressway do you know wht he said? "you cant write me I am on the expressway"

lets write these assholes take their licenses away and make it miserable for them to drive until they start to drive like human beings.

Take care and be safe all

I too could not find any information on TH's accident. If someone has the wake/funeral info, if you think it is not inappropriate could you post it on here please? No one seems to have heard anything.

i wasnt one of his closest friends but i did work with him pretty closely. and because of that, i feel as though i have lost a dear friend. i feel as though i have lost a brother. anyone that knew him would understand that. i think that whether you knew him for 20 minutes or for twenty years, you knew timmy. and you knew where he stood on things. he and i stopped shitheads everyday together. and he loved it. he wouldnt of traded his job for the world. he fuckin loved this job. he was a prince. he was always willing to do the little shit that all the other lazy assholes wouldnt do. he was always willing to stay and work late if thats what was better for the team. he loved his family and spoke of them often. he was my friend. and ill miss him... God Bless You Timmy!

I am not a company man...

Writing tickets is not about being a company man or a revenue agent. It is pat of doing your job, just like writing reports, curfews, arrest reports, To/Froms, and love letters to the waitress at the coffee shop.

Read in the newspaper that they only charged the guy driving the vehicle that killed Tim Harts with Driving Under the Influence and failure to reduce speed. What is up with that. Any ideas

Tim was laid to rest today, I'm not gonna claim to be one of his closest friends but I did work with him directly in 189, one hell of a guy. I'd like to say thanks to all the came to the wake last night, and the funeral today. The amount of people who showed up just goes to show what kind of person he is. Miss ya Timmy, God Bless!!
