The Hammer Falls Today?

  • Authorities are expected to arrest four Chicago Police officers today in a corruption investigation that could lead Cook County prosecutors to drop more than 100 criminal cases because they were tainted by the allegedly crooked cops.

The officers are members of the department's elite Special Operations Section, a citywide unit that seizes guns and drugs in crime hot spots.

Four to be indicted today. We don't know what that means for the other five or what it might mean for anyone else caught up in this mess. Maybe they're only going to be charged Administratively? All that does is take away the prison aspect of it. You can still lose your job, your pension, and your house in a Civil suit.

I hope that when the arrests are made, it wont turn in to an H.B.T. incident. Who would the responding officers summon to assist in such an incident? Their fellow comrades in S.O.S. of course. What a joke! I hope these guys get everything they deserve.

So wait until AFTER becoming a PO to develop a rap sheet? I have never understood that about some of you guys!
You go through a long process to get hired, only to get insanely stupid and throw it all away for nothing!!
How stupid can you be to not realize you can make more money playing by the rules than by trying to get over on the system?
Does ANYONE who visits Second City Cop think this will teach ANY cops a lesson? I'd like to know!!!

I hear from a good source that the midnight captain is getting dumped to another district because when he was the acting DC he "uncovered" hundreds of hours of OT that the commander was giving his office staff for "admin work" Some of it was in time but most was in $$$$. Stay tuned

Every time the media refers to SOS as an "elite unit," I want to puke. What do they do that is so above and beyond what others of us in units, tact teams, gang teams and beat cars do?

There very well may be some good officers in SOS, but the actions of a dozen scumbags have tarnished our image yet again.
And if it is proven they did what is alleged, I hope they go to prison for a long time.
I go out there every night and bust my ass and somehow manage to come home without robbing or framing people.

I know the apologists will attack my critique, but they have no moral gound to stand on.
I am not attacking officers, I am attacking gangsters that somehow got hired.
The more that get locked up and sent to prison, the better for us honest guys.

Several property Crime Detectives made Sgt from A/4 and went directly to IAD. This was about 2 or 3 years ago. They bitched and moaned and swore they would leave ASAP. They're all still there. On Tuesday I was walking through 26th Street and 2 of them were coming in with files. I asked them what they were doing. They got this look on their faces like the secret was out. I wonder what they are going to get out of this? I know JF socially. If I were him I'd take heart in the fact that these goofs were running an investigation. The SA does have some good investigators though; I'd be worried about those guys.

Let us, for their families, wives, kids, and friends, give them a break today.

I tell you who "fell" today. Commander Powers formerly of the Personell Department passed away after a long battle with cancer. This was a fine man who handled many very difficult situations with tremendous dignity and decency.

He tried to get coppers the help that they needed without jamming them up. In some cases it was impossible because some of us will shoot ourselves in the foot despite the best efforts of those around us.

Here was a man who was in authority and had some power himself but he managed to keep his nose clean during a long career with the department. Our current brass and politions should learn from him

While there is no excuse for stealing and the other major crimes the Unit 153 officers are accused of, which go beyond the pale of the "Gray Areas" that any good cop has to sometimes operate in, one wonders if culpability lies not just with the accused and their supervisors, who may have had knowledge of the alleged corruption, but the unit and department as well. Being chided and encourgaed at roll call on almost a daily basis by your higher ups, to not just make a daily arrest, but "something good" can create a climate that makes some feel they are justified in their actions. The excuse for encouraging officers to make make arrests, no matter what, is usually blamed on the commander, headquarters and most recently the "D.O.C.", therefore, don't they also bear some responsibilty? Perhaps the best thing about being a supervisor on the C.P.D. is that their names rarely appear on any arrest report or case report, and, as a result, any accusations their charges must face can avoid them leaving maybe the slightest blemish or a "slap on the wrist". Supervisors usually are dropped from a team or a unit (and usually only for a small period of time) and rarely are suspended or prosecuted or face any real discipline. Doesn't immoral behavior breed immoral behavior? Whether police officers like to admit it or not, they represent the governmet to many people. Those in charge reflect on all of city workers in some way. If you have an immoral and corrupt group of men and women in charge of the goverment of this city, does it not surprise you that some of their employees would pick up on this and become corrupt themselves?

Dammit, my family knows a few of these guys from the past, and like KH and TS. I hope none of this is true, but I'm one of the ones who believes the CPD is thoroughly compromised.

The greatest reservation I have here is that this is IAD doing the investigating and Devine doing the prosecuting rather than the FBI and Feds. When was the last time the Cook County State's Attorney was right in prosecuting ANY member of the CPD for on-the-job misconduct?

Innocent until proven guilty, especially in Cook County.

If they're innocent, then it will be almost impossible for any case to be proven in a court of law.

If they are guilty, then fuck 'em, they tarnished every honest cop on the job with their selfish bullshit.

Based on what is in the paper and on the news, I'd bet they're guilty as sin. Time will tell.

This is a sad day for all of us. Long ago I abandoned the idea that the Drug War was good for America. The Drug War's issues with power, money and greed are worse than a bunch of stun out junkies. Here we get the best of both worlds, strung out junkies with the crime and corruption.

It's time for another O.W. Wilson and a new page for the CPD. This is far worse than Summerdale and Richard Morrison days

I hope that the department, these officers and their families will be in everyone's prayers.

It is too easy to throw blame around. Whose fault is it that these guys are in shit soup?

They did it to themselves and probably are going to take down their supervisors and command because of their actions.

It is their own fault. Is it my bosses fault, or the Command Staff fault, or the Superintendents fault if I steal?

They ruined their own lives, the lives of the HONEST cops they work with, and the lives of their families because of greed and their imbecile like brains that made them feel they would not get caught.

This is proof that there is no culture of corruption, as so many of you kiddie cops claim. It is proof that if you cross the line, you will pay the price. A very, very big price.

It was (only slightly) over the top. There might be occasional examples, but they are few and far between. Not saying these guys are innocent or guilty, but I'll give the two my family knows and likes the benefit of the doubt.

What I am sure of is that the timing of this is at least a little political. 3 white guys and a hispanic guy, right? Just as they are announcing all the minorities thinking about running for mayor?

Daley and Devine want to be able to wave a few sacrificed heads in front of the masses so they can say "see what a great job we do uncovering corrupt white people in this city"? Maybe I'm too cynical, but two years to investigate this and it breaks just when Jackson Jr. and others look like they will be running?

This ain't random. These guys might not be innocent, but they sure as hell are being used as props this week.

RIP, Commander Bill Powers.

He was one of the nicest guys I ever met on this job. When I was in sergeant school, he was a Lt. in Personnel and talked to us about suicide and personnel problems with subordinates. At the end of the lecture, he gave out his office and home numbers and said that if he could help us out with anything, 24 hours a day, don't hesitate to contact him. How many bosses do that?

God bless you, Commander.

I don't think the M/B Sgt. TC had anything to do with this case, and he did not fuck up the 10th district caper--the ADS did. Between her and the union rep, I don't know who was more culpable. Philly wanted to push that one under the carpet cuz' he didn't want any scandals on his watch. In the end the judge made the final verdict. Just wonder how fat that check was.

The M/W TC used to do Police Impersonations which makes him a natural. There are tons of Accused: Unknown; Not sustained cases out there. Those cases should be looked at.
