Crikey! Who Didn't See This Coming?

OK, this guy was an adventurer. He was a risk taker. He was even mildly annoying at times. But when you push the envelope time after time after time, something bad is going to happen:
  • CAIRNS, Australia - Steve Irwin, the hugely popular Australian television personality and conservationist known as the "Crocodile Hunter," was killed Monday by a stingray while filming off the Great Barrier Reef. He was 44.
  • "He came on top of the stingray and the stingray's barb went up and into his chest and put a hole into his heart," said Stainton, who was on board Irwin's boat at the time.
It's like some of these guys who need to climb Everest half a dozen times. Or skydivers. Or rock climbers with no ropes. Or BASE jumpers. Eventually, the odds are going to catch up with you. It's just a fact. A tragedy, to be sure. But not unexpected. RIP Steve.

UPDATE: Spelling errors corrected. Thanks for pointing them out.

What a freak accident! When stingrays strike with their venomous barbs, it's usually around the feet or ankles, very painful and rarely fatal. Steve got stung in the chest.

I met Steve and Terri Irwin near Brisbane, Queensland, Australia several years ago--a very nice fascinating couple with that sharp Aussie sense of humor.

My only problem with Steve was that instead of enjoying a couple pints of Victoria Bitter, Australia's great lager, he, a "fair dinkum mate" was a teetotaler. Great story teller, animal lover and all-around nice guy.

He is survived by his lovely Oregon-born wife, Terri, and two children.

Rest in peace, mate.

Godspeed, Steve! You made me laugh, and for that I thank you.

We've lost a good man. You could count on one hand the number of people killed around the world by the usually docile stingray. To the fatalists out there, if it had been a croc or even the kick of a six-foot boomer kangaroo, I could have understood his death. Not a stingray! Its barb must have struck him right through the heart.

Mr. Erwin was a decent and well-liked character. His death was an absolute fluke. He provided both adults and children alike with great educational entertainment with his unique and enthusiatic Aussie twang. He will be sorely missed.

At least the fellow died doing what he loved to do.

R.I.P. Condolences to his family.

I am suprised at the remarks on this and other blogs/message boards about Steve. I would have thought that most people would be ambivilent about his passing; if he wasn't out screwing with sting rays, he'd be around to bounce his son on his knee.

Us human types shouldn't go around lions/tigers/bears/crocs.

The lions/tigers/bears/crocs don't hang around us human types.

Steve clowning around croc and sting rays shows us one very simple truth: Darwin is alive and well.

A hero? I think not. Do you even know the definition of the word hero? Apparently not. While Steve was a very good guy, entertaining, gave back to those that helped him along the way and was a true conservationist, he was no hero. The term "hero" is reserved for people off fighting wars, doctors saving peoples lives, nurses doing the same, firemen, Policemen, anybody that does something heroic. A television character does not fall into anyone of those roles.

Let us look at the six children killed in the fire.

A brief part of the Sun Times report.

They came from Mexico for a better life, but surviving in Chicago was a struggle for the ever-expanding Ramirez family.

The children worked odd jobs and minded each other while their parents toiled at a nearby laundry. With 10 kids to care for, the parents sought help -- tutoring for their children, financial assistance to pay the rent -- from some of the many social service agencies in their Rogers Park neighborhood.

But finances were apparently still so tight that the electricity was cut off in May, and they lit their three-bedroom apartment with candles. Fire officials now think that one of the candles might have touched off a fast-moving fire that killed half of Amado and Augusta Ramirez' children.

Hmmmmmmm... Both illegal alien parents worked FULL TIME at a nearby dry cleaners. Some of the kids worked. They were getting rent assistance, they were getting other financial assistance.

But yet they couldn't afford electricity?

Give me a BREAK!

JUST A FEW WEEKS AGO 10 AMERICAN BLACK CITIZENS WERE SHOT IN A DRIVE BY! It hardly made a bleep on the news.

Now a family of illegals jammed into an apartment is headlines news when some of their children are killed in a fire started by candles!

I doubt few of us are harden enough on this job not to feel sorry or bad children are dead. I would never even like seeing a child cry let alone be hurt or killed.

But many of us with time on the job has been to these apartments filled with either illegals or American welfare families. Apartments that are filled with people, usually filthy and stinking from so many people in one place.

And now we are shocked when this happens. I can tell you this. No matter who you would have reported this family's apartment to, if you had known about the fact that a tribe of illegals were living in an apartment without electricity, nothing would have been done. But now that news cameras are out there playing on peoples' emotions, every politician and social worker are claiming who they could have helped them.

The retired firefighters and police officers are having their HEALTH INSURANCE cut off in 2013. But our tax dollars are thrown at people illegally coming into this country.

And as to the poster about how these illegals are paying taxes and social security... WHAT BULLSHIT. 80 percent or better are pain in cash. While the other 20% use fake social security numbers of other people. So yes those 20% pay into the fund but the cost of having illegals here is 100 times what they contribute. Not to mention if its you social security number they are using, try explaining to the IRS that the income being reported under your SS# isn't yours. They will tell you, prove it.

Too bad about the kids dying....but the parents have to be liable here. Pay your bills and stop multiplying like rabbits for chrissake. Hello? Planned Parenthood comes in the Spanish version too. The lit candles are an invitation to disaster, especially with kids in diapers running around. I'm betting that all kids were born here and parents are illegals. If they can't pay electic bills you know they aren't paying those hospital maternity bills either. Notice the media will say the parents are from Mexico and work so hard, but don't mention that they shouldn't be here in America in the first place.
Time to shut the borders now. Save Americans from further pilfering from illegals.

A comment on that terrible tragedy where all the children died in the fire....In 30+ years on this job I have cried 3 times, all were at fires and all where children have died. I can only imagine the agony the parents must be going through..That being said, this madness must stop.....Both parents worked to support their family, but my God, know when to say when, you cant'have it both ways, having all those children and expecting someone else to pay the freight..And now they'll be looking to blame ComEd for cutting off their power for non payment..I'm sorry but am I the only person who see's this lunacy...

Aside from being a devoted and loving husband and father, Steve Irwin was a passionate conservationist and animal advocate with charisma and a contagious enthusiasm for living.

Steve Irwin died doing what he loved. Like police officers working in high-crime areas, he lived on the edge. The joy he brought to millions of Animal Planet/Crocodile Hunter viewers around the world is a tragic loss.

On the other hand, his comments suggest that 9:00 PM is a world-class asshole.

May God bless Steve Irwin and his family.

Um, little stingrays hit the ankle/feet areas. If you stretch your arms out to each side, we're talking about a huge stingray, the kind divers can ride.

They're very gentle but if you scare them, they will flip up that barbed tail and get you!!

The barb is very poisonous...

Fire deaths in Rogers Park. How long before the police are blamed in some way for this? The Sun Times is even hinting at blaming the neighbors because the neighbors wouldn't allow the Mexican family to run extension cords into their apartments and let the neighbors pay for their electricity. And Alderman Joe Moore says that 10 people living in a three bedroom apt shows how terrible poverty is in this city. Huh?

Well, I guess we do not have to smell your breath to know that your head is up your ass.

A hero is any person who makes a difference in the life or lives of others. This man is a hero to people in the conservation movement. You do not have to be killed in a war or on the streets to be a hero. You also do not have to save some one's life.

Heros are defined by the people the affect, not some tavern copper hero with nothing better to do than drink, go home, post here, go to bed, and drink some more.

I have been to disaserous fires-risked my life, sufferd smoke inhalation-but I was never trained in fire fighting,a shhame cause alot of times we'll be the 1st on the scene. Ifr you've ever called 911 you'd know they transfer your call to cfd. But it's only right, they call us to the scene. I've run through burning buildings after hearinng people inside, only later to find out it was the lousy TV making noise. Did'nt save their TV.

Have a little mercy, that clan lost half thier youth in that tragic fire. What happened to compassion? They never said in the paper that the family was on welfare, matter of fact said they're were all working in a way or another. Not taking from mine or your paycheck.
I do believe there is a handful of us here if living across the hall, watching that young family trying to make ends meet without sucking off the dole, might have tried to help them get their electrical bill paid. We drop 100 bucks easy in the bar, cigs, ps2, whatever, and you would actually see your money go to someone who needed a hand. Commed better have dotted their eyes and crossed their tees', those fire alarms that didn't work were connected to the electrical system.

It's obvious that YOU are EASILY influenced by television. According to YOUR definition, a hero is somebody that makes a difference in somebody elses life. Does that make my mailman a hero? He makes a difference in my life everyday. And what about my Sgt. The old bastard makes me work. He's no hero to me yet he makes a difference in my life every minute that I'm at work. What about the guys that pickup my garbage? I'd be up a creek without a paddle if they didn't do it. Hero's? I don't think so. And what about Fat Phil? Is he a hero? According to your way of thinking he his. After all, he affects everyone of us each day.

No sir, Steve Irwin was a great guy, a charasmatic figure, a true conservationist,a funny man, and a very entertaining TELEVISION SHOW HOST. None of that however makes him a hero. He was also a good father and husband. Now THAT may make him a hero but then again if it does, then it makes millions of others heros as well.

You need to put down the remote once in awhile and get out more. There is life outside of television. Go take a walk, smell the flowers, see whats going on in the real world. Steve Irwin did not die jumping into the water to save a drowing child, run into a burning building to rescue someone trapped inside, shoot it out with a crazed gunman. He filmed a telvision show and was killed doing that. Doesn't make him a hero. You want to see some hero's? Get out from behind that desk and go on a ride along with some of the boys in blue. Those guys are hero's. Everyday. It will probably be an eye opener for you, seeing what they do everyday. You will at last get a chance to see some true hero's, not some TV show host thats doing for a living what some of us do for fun on our vacation.

I loved watching Steve Irwin's show and I'm sorry that he's not here anymore. I will miss him and his show and I pray for his family. But please don't call him a hero. Not when we are surrounded by people who commit acts of heroism everyday right here on the streets of Chicago. Or in Iraq, or Afganistan or any other far off place that our soldiers are serving. When you use the word "hero" to describe what Steve Irwin did, you cheapen the meaning of the word.

I always found this guy to be rather annoying (may he rest in peace). Going out and making a living rousting, aggravating and otherwise screwing with animals so they would become agitated enough to attempt to attack him. It never seemed very entertaining to me. A bit on the sadistic side I think. Not sadistic violent. Just getting pleasure out of fucking with an animal. There were rare times that his shtick actually was in an effort to actually save an animal but more often than not he would simply be antagonizing them for the sake of the camera. All those alligators that were minding their own business can now rest in peace.

I think Steve was irritating at times; and I didn't like the stunt with the baby. But, if you think he was stupid you are letting your over inflated egos and the beer do all your thinking.

Consider this, he was known world wide, he was a zoologist, conservationist and filmmaker. He was also probably a self-made millionaire before age 44 doing what he loved to do. What have you achieved in you life?

He was a professional dealing with wild animals. As an amateur, I have been snorkeling off beaches in Hawaii, California and Florida. The same thing could have happened to me or anyone else.

Steve, God rest-ya-mate.
