Heroes Honored

The Lambert Tree and Carter Harrison Awards for heroism were handed out Tuesday. The winners:
  • Last year, Sergeant Richard Plotke assisted two Morton Grove officers serve a warrant on West Summerdale. They were greeted with two offenders and gunfire. Sergeant Plotke shot both offenders. All the officers survived the ordeal.
  • In January, off-duty firefighter Joe Kish rushed into a house fire on South Princeton. He rescued a man then went back into the smoke to make sure no one else was inside. The rescued man survived.
Left unsaid in the Channel 7 report is that Sergeant Plotke didn't just shoot both offenders - he killed them. We don't care what anyone says, but killing two armed offenders who had just attempted to murder police officers is heroism of the highest order and more than deserving of the Lambert Tree Award. Congratulations Sarge.

Offtopic:

Over at Domelights, the unofficial site for the PPD, ChiBob has let everyone know about a fundraiser that will take place in Chicago on 10/13 to help cop killer Wesley Cook, aka Mumia Abu Jamal. I'm not sure how many of you are aware of this so called event, but I wanted to bring it to your attention nonetheless.

Justice for P/O Daniel Faulkner

Here is a list of supporters for this scumbag.

Sgt. Plotke did, but being severely overlooked, which is probably fine by him, is Sgt. Frank Valadez of the TRU unit, who also received the Lambert Tree Award. Sgt. Valadez shot and killed an armed offender who was in possession of two guns and led officers on a high speed chase on the Dan Ryan; the offender originally dropped his weapon as if he was surrendering then pulled a second weapon as Sgt. Valadez approached, he was then shot and killed. The offender was wanted for a homicide in the 013th District. Excellent job Frank!

Killing two offenders is not the point of the Lambert Tree - nor should it qualify anyone for a merit appointment standing alone. That is part of the problem with the way promotions are handled on this job. I salute Sgt. Plotke, what he did was commendable and deserves to be honored - because he responded as an experienced and well-trained police officer should without hesitation or concern for himself - that would not be changed even if these two men had not died of their wounds. The fact that he also happened to have saved the lives of two other men, police officers or not, is also to be commended. Not a thing wrong there but let us remember that our primary responsibility is to preserve life and property, NOT TO KILL PEOPLE, NO MATTER HOW DESERVING.

Also killing people is not necessarily meritorious - sometimes it is more meritorious to simply prevent harm from coming to oneself or another. No objection to Plotke be meritoriously appointed if he has the right stuff and that is more than the ability to shoot straight.

Frank didn't get the Lambert Tree award, he was nominated for it though, which in itself is a great honor. Frank, I believe has 3 award of valor's and numerous other awards for his heroics. Not to take away from Frank's heroics, but lets not take away Plotke's thunder, let the light shine on him for a moment or two, he deserves it!

I understand the whole idea of getting promoted if you get shot thing, under the same guise you should get the bump for saving the life of another police officer/s and averting them getting shot. That is what Plotke did and you shouldn't take anything away from that!

When is the last time you saw an officer get shot and then get promoted. I know several that were shot that got absolutely nothing. It used to be automatic. Not anymore

the truth is they should give awards to anyone who does the right thing. A f'kn award what doesnt cost the city anything, usually some kiss ass gets a lot of awards sucking up to his boss. The truth is most coppers should get awards for stuff they do but instead they get a pat on the back and the shaft.....
