Homicides Up?

It's too bad we had to institute fully moderated comments a few months ago - it really did detract from the endless and instant give and take. We're still getting the comments from the assholes who drove us to be pulling our hair out, but thankfully, you the readers are spared their insanity. But it does make us wonder that two or three months of them not even beginning to see their stupidity published that they still insist on trying anyway.

Anyway, from the comments sections recently, a recent one you may have missed:
  • Per I-CLEAR stats...
As of 05 Oct: Homicide number for the year to date is 339.
Same period last year was 338.
2006 has now taken the lead.
Is this true? We aren't going to be at work for a few days so we really can't check it. But if we're surpassing last year, we'd better be expecting some "new and improved" initiatives to be thrown everybody's direction. The last thing the mayor wants (especially in an election year) is something that even LOOKS like a rise in crime. Could we have finally reached a staffing level at which the lack of officers on the street directly translates into a rise in homicide numbers? We'll see.

The numbers had to go up, considering that Area Two took a major hit in the past week or so; and if one considers that agg batteries (shooting) numbers are up, one might conclude that the numbers would be even higher, but for medical science and/or poor aim.
Look for "new initiatives" (a politically exciting term), after an upcoming meeting with the brass re: the uptick in homicides in Area Two (addressing the real issues, no (too hard?), but something for public comsumption and to satisfy the 5th floor....

Just think of how many homicides were not committed by A/2 gun team taking all those guns off the street. Just think of how many homicides were stopped because of gang intelligence. Just think of how many homicides were stopped because of narcotics taking all those kilos off the street. Just think of how many homicides were prevented by those street pole cameras. That number probably would be around 700 if not for the efforts of those mentioned units and devices. Sometimes, regardless of what you put into effect, stuff happens. Bring back the Death Penalty and Stiffer Laws.

Give me a break about the A/2 Gun Team. Show me their seizures from legitimate gang bangers in A/2. Maybe if they were doing more actual work in Area 2 there would be less homicides there.

The reason our homicide rate is where it is and not around 700 is because of bad aim by the offenders, generally quick response by paramedics, and most importantly, the skill of the trauma surgeons at places like Stroger, Christ, and Mt. Siani Hospitals. It is certainly not because of any BS that we are doing.

SCC,

I'm not sure this is something you would be interested in, but Haloscan will not only let you moderate your comments, but you can ban people as well (and reverse that just as easily).

Those who log in anonymously now would still be able to do so with Haloscan.

Haloscan is not without drawbacks, however. It used to be that if you're weren't a premium member, all comments older than 4 months would be archived by Haloscan (not deleted). Although I am not a premium member, I've noticed that even though my archives show zero posts, the comments are still there. I would imagine it's something that has been changed.

There are quite a few other commenting systems here, but other than Haloscan (which I use), I can't offer any pros or cons in regards to them.

There is only so much we can do to reverse this trend in shootings/killings, especially in Area 2. When the projects came down, those folks had to go somewhere. How did they support themselves in the 'jects? Crime.
when they moved into their new surroundings, they attempted to ecke out some territory for themselves. The old guard, even if they were of the same gang, said "no way," and the bullets flew. Many of these shootings are not gang vs gang, but within the same gang. They simply don't want to share any drug proceeds with the new guys. Granted, a lot of initiatives have slowed the pace of shootings/killings, but we simply can't be everywhere. Guns that are seized are often "replaced." I have yet to hear of any slowdowns in gun manufacturing plants! Area
2 is clearly "under seige." Maybe the newly created "wolfpack" version of Safe Summer will kick off in Area 2, where it is so badly needed, instead of starting off in Area 4. It certainly couldn't hurt.

Or a novel idea here, especially in Area 2, bring back District Commanders who actually know and did the job, and get out of the way while they actually let guys do the job, instead of the political sucks they have now who cower in their offices fearing the phone ringing with a political hack on the other end telling them how to be the police. This would surely be a welcome change in 006.

be safe out there and don't get into anything you can't get out of because back-up ain't comin.

The ONLY reason there are not 2000 homocides a year in this city is the CFD ambulances running there asses off getting victims to hospitals. Modern medical care has decreased homocide the same as it has decreased battlefield casualties.

How many agg bats in city??

I was told that if a homicide occurs and the victim(s)/offender(s) relationship qualifies as a domestic relationship it is not classified as a homicide. It is classified as a “domestic incident" instead.

Get away from that curtain, there is nothing to see behind there.

WELCOME TO CHICAGO THE CITY OF
VICTIMS AND PERPETRATORS.

It looks like the mere word Homicide is avoided all together in the media. We know the HOMICIDE numbers are stat games and reclassification by title and we shake our heads.

When did a homicide become anything other than a homicide, better yet when did using the word homicide become a politically correct issue.

HOMICIDE, HOMICIDE, HOMICIDE, HOMICIDE, HOMICIDE = Unlawful killings, Someone who has KILLED ANOTHER HUMAN BEING Unlawfully.

If you can't own a gun in Liberal Chicago and your not in your home or place of business protecting yourself in accordance to the Constitution, what is a killing/death/mutual combatant via of a gun other than a HOMICIDE!

Likewise for those knife wielders and any other object used to bludgeon another unlawfully to death aka HOMICIDE.

How come a drug overdose death is counted as an accident UNLESS it is someone whose family has wack, then all of the sudden it is a drug induced homicide and the dealer gets 30 years? I can't imagine what the homicide numbers would be if all of these ODs were counted as homicides.

Speaking of homicides, did anyone else notice our uber professional Mo'Nique Bonds doing the soundbytes at the triple this weekend? Wasn't she a great rep for our Department wearing her grey tracksuit and hoodie with the white t-shirt? Come on. Even when Camden gets called out in the middle of the night he manages to look like a professional. Mo'Nique just looked Mo'sloppy. Somebody send her back behind the desk and let Camden do the talking.

Watch...any day now the department will release the stats from August to the news showing that the homicide rate is down from last year. But, what we know is that September was a bloody month (for more recent years that is) where 49 people were killed citywide. October is continuing this trend. Can you say 500 homicides for 2006?

FYI, 006 has done a pretty good job for most of the summer of containing their violent crime (and it's happened without a lot of pod cameras or other resources that have been more available to other districts in Area 2, like the 004th District). The DOC level II never wound up in 006 this summer, until last week. It's now back in 004.

I don't know Cmdr. Doty well, but I seriously doubt that he is allowing Alderman and other political creatures to totally dictate his crime fighting strategy. He's got a young tact Lt., and decent tact and gang teams, for the most part. They've had some good seizures from their search warrants this summer also. 006 does have its share of dogs, but so does every other district. Nothing's gonna change that. This incoming GPS might steer a few of them towards the proactive side, but I wouldn't bet on it. And don't forget that when the projects of the duece came down, a large number of those folks moved into 007 and 006. Due to that alone, you are bound to have additional blips on the radar.

Jeez! More hating on the A/2 gun team....one can only wonder, how many guns have the haters seized?
How many warrants have they been the affiant on? This year? This summer?

Until you step in another man's shoes and try to match his/her productivity, sometimes it's just best to shut up. At the end of the year, I would expect that the Area 2 team will stand alone with the most guns seized, and with far fewer "they stole my money" beefs than many other specialized units.
Regardless of how we all feel towards other cops or other units, every weapon seized means less people being shot by them; even more importantly, less of them being pointed at US.

To the Doty Lover--You are right, 006 has done a fair job of barely keeping its head above water. Albeit a degree of the increase in stats (blips in your words) is due to the relocation of CHA residents, please explain the FACT that in the 3 years under Doty the top 7 crime stats have all risen, and made 006 at or near the top. Explain the FACT that in the past Doty has had his favorite TACT Sgt killing any Level II DOC because it didnt reflect well on him. This last Level II DOC could not be squashed because it is a result of a review of the Area 2 Dep's performance. Explain the FACT that in his 3 years of leadership (?) 26% of the blue shirts bid out (workers mostly). Explain the FACT that when a class of LTs was made that ALL 7 LTs in the District bid out. You are absolutely right in the assessment of a good young Tact LT. just imagine the work he would be able to accomplish if he were allowed to do the job. My statement(s) were not an indictment of TACT or its LT. Tough times call for tough decisions, unfortunately the 006th District Commander is only in fear of the phone ringing and his next merit promotion being taken away because some working blue shirt pissed off a political hack. Why is it 006 doesnt have the number of POD cameras other districts do? Because the ALDERMEN HAVE TO BUY THEM!! Ask Doty how the ALDERMAN had the flashing blue light deactivated on the POD at 79 & Maryland because it made the neighborhood appear criminal. The Department has only 100 PODS for depoyment, the rest are what are called MENU items for ALDERMEN to choose from out of their yearly budget.FACT-- Doty was the author of the proposed pilot program last year to VIOLATE the contract by changing the Watch starting times. Doty is the ONLY Commander I have ever heard of that even his secretary tried to leave and is now a co-secretary. FOR THIS THE DEPARTMENT WILL REWARD HIM AND PROMOTE HIM! Get your head out of A** and start paying attention to what is going on around you, or are you to busy protecting your house mouse position to be aware of what is going on around you?

It's only going to get worse when the gangbangers come back from "IRAQ" with all of their government funded training in all branches of the armed forces. Medals of "Marksman" or "Sharp shooter" or what have you. The blue shirts job will only be the front line statistics handler. (fill out that G.O.C.R. and make me a copy) While the "Ties" job is business as usual. Overloaded at least 10 times worse than now.
Not just here but nation wide.

"Every weapon seized means less people being shot by them" What an idiotic statement that is. It has been proved by all available data that an armed populace (More guns) is quite naturally a safer populace.

Wake up boyos, gun seizure is the liberal's answer to crime on the streets. The gun is at fault and not the guy using it for crime.

Liberals cannot bear to actually hold anyone to account for their conduct. It's always someone or somthing else's fault. Like the gun.

Join the NRA, they support you, support them!

And if for no other reason than Daley, Blago, Devine, and the Toddler hate that fine organization of real Americans.

I'm 9:28 and I don't know who 5:50 is. I'm retired but I do know Phil.and have for about 34 years. I don't stick up for him beccause I haven't seen him for 10 years. He runs the Dept. the way he wants. When you run it you can do the same until then shut the fuck up !
Every Super has run the Dept. different and no one agrees with the policy that's the way it's always been. I served under 10 different ones and I've always felt the same as you about everyone
Every blue shirt on the job feels the same way. As strange as it may seem every Super was once a blue shirt and none of them can relate to where they came from.

anonymous (8:28AM), it sounds like you're one disgruntled person in 006. My question to you is, why aren't YOU one of the people who have BID OUT?? Sounds like you're eating yourself up over the Cmdr. there. The real sad thing about this is, he probably isn't doing the same about you, or giving a rat's ass as to your opinions of him, or what he's doing over there.
Do yourself a favor, fill out a par form, please!! Life's just too short to carry all that stress inside you, and from the time of your post (8:28AM), you wake up with far more of it than nature intended for you to.

No stress, just honest observations from a working blue shirt in 006. Its too bad that you had to lower yourself to be left with nothing but a personal attack upon me when confronted with the facts. As for Doty giving a rat's ass about me You are absolutely right HE DOESNT. But then again the only person he gives a rats ass about is himself as evidenced by the following FACT in his 3 years-- Officers have been hurt, stabbed, hospitalized for a multitude of reasons, he has been to the hospital exactly once, a couple of weeks ago after a squad wreck, ONCE. WAY TO STAND UP FOR YOUR GUYS COMMANDER. Did he at least make it to the scene of last weeks triple homicide? Every other boss was there. It was pretty embarassing last summer when every boss from Area 2 & 35th & Michigan got up in the middle of the night to go to the triple homicide on Vernon, but no Doty. PAR form why fill out a PAR form? I can work at 50% of what I used to do and still look like a star in 006 while dogs have over run it. Crime is like shooting fish in a barrel in 006, why leave when I can make all the court time I need and do not have to work a side job? Most of all lets not forget the spirit of the topic, which is the rising homicide rate. I provided reasoning and facts as to how a ball-less Commander adds to that number. One of the best things I ever learned was "THIS TO SHALL PASS", boy November and his third year in position cannot come fast enough, as hopefully he will be promoted for his utter incompetence and complete inability to deal with people.
