An Asshat Speaks

From the Comments Section of Problem #8
  • Anonymous said...Hey SCC, go back to working on the sheets! How often does something like this happen? How about this was the first time. And the SWAT team handled it. We don't need machine guns in beat cars. Gun nut. 11/02/2006 11:30:49 PM
OK asshole, how about these?
  • 010th District 1997 or 98, PO pulls up on the scene of "shots fired" at Cermak and Avers and takes an AK round through the hand.
  • 011th District Rockwell Gardens late 1990's, plainclothes officer takes a rifle round in his forearm. The only thing that saved him losing the arm is the bullet shattered on the chain link fence surrounding the project breezeways.
  • 010th District again, early 2000's. Sergeant riding near Rockwell and 22 Place take a rifle round thru the forearm just driving around. The Sergeant lost so much meat on his arm, he never returned to the job.
  • Or certain New Years Eve's in the 002, 007, 018, etc. where rifle fire from the projects actually drove police from the scenes for hours.
And that's just off the top of our head where a rifle was used against the police. How about scenes where a rifle or a shotgun would have made a difference?
  • 009th District workplace shooting. HBT didn't arrive for 20 minutes
  • Donny Marquez shooting. 025 and SOS had to run into the line of fire with nothing but pistols just to drag Donny's body out.
  • The dead guys from Kedzie and Augusta did a drive by in 010 this summer, killing one and wounding 3 others - can you imagine if a one man day beat car happened to be around the corner instead of 3 blocks away?
So as you see asshole, heavy weapons immediately available can make a huge difference on certain scenes. And it's also not "the first time" as you so blithely put it. If you worked anywhere busy, you know it happens all the time, just not always against the police. If you've ever gone to the ER and sat in with a jagoff that just got gutted by rifle fire while the docs and nurses tried to stabilize them enough for surgery, you know it happens almost weekly.

It's obvious to us that even though we are a few years short of KMA, we definitely have more time in the can and more time sleeping in a squad than you have in your piddling little career. Go away troll.

Excellent response SCC. Keep up the heat on this issue. Everyone on this job should not be carrying heavy weapons for obvious reasons, but every watch could and should have two or three people that are proficient and carrying these weapons on the street. Oh by the way, where is FOP on this issue? Too busy endorsing every gun hating Democrat on the ballot.

This is a pretty popular blog so I'd be willing to bet that the Media reads here often looking for stories - anything for a tip. Just be careful what you say. I'd hate to read about one of you being eaten by the wolves, which is exactly what is happening right now in Philly for instance.

Philadelphia's "Domelights" is Chicago's "Second City Cop", but only in forum format.
The Media are having a field day with a prank that was captured on video and put on YouTube. The article and situation can be found in this thread at the Dome.

You all be safe out there.

This department is behind the times. Say hello to Aunt Bea and Andy Taylor.

Central Florida has rifles, tasers, bean bags, and ongoing training, etc. Do you even have to qualify w/your duty sidearm on an "X" (annual, etc.) basis here?

We need to give our men and women w/the CPD the best tools and training to effectively do their jobs and let's avoid them getting disabled/LODD because of the lack of the above. Plus they should be the leaders of what they do instead of lagging so far behind...

I have to agree with SCC 100%. Incidents where heavy weapons that have been used against the police and civilians who have been murdered are on the rise. The fact of the matter is this: Listen Mr. Mayor, this country and the City of Chicago are past the point of no return when it comes to gun control. Put all the silly laws you want on the books. It's easier to get a gun than a nickle bag of weed.
There should be 1 or 2 cars per district per watch with a shotgun a the ready. If nothing else, this would allow time if need be for a SORT Car or HBT to arrive.

Early in my career the Department gave us a shot gun for every car. I've always considered that shot gun a tie breaker. We also carried almost any kind of handgun and ammo we wanted. When the Department decided to unarm us, many of us decided to arm our lockers. I've always kept a shot gun in my locker (registered of course). There were times when I was glad I had it. Gotta do what you gotta do. MAN LAW !!!!!!!

We DO need rifles in at least a few cars in the district or units. Thank God these idiots running around this city arent pointing their long guns at more PO's like they do in Los Angeles and other places, We'd be fucked! I for one am starting to carry my .223 with me at work for when and if I need to deploy it. Waiting for the Dept. to arrive and keep you safe is not reasonable, You'll be dead by then. We are the police , WE NEED long guns, not little hip shooters that are defensive weapons to begin with. If I ever have to use it and get in trouble, big shit! at least I'm still alive. A simple carrying an un-authorized weapon in a good shoot isnt going to get me worried. Some of these clueless Cops around here and higher-ups need to start living in reality and seeing what goes on in parts of this city and even worse in other cities. Wake up! My life is more important than stupid rules that dont take saving my life into consideration. WE NEED RIFLES, PERIOD

SCC: I agree with having rifles or shotguns back in the cars. Anything that I can have at my disposal that will help me or another officer get home in one piece is well worth the cost. But that is me talking, not the City, and not some supervisors working the street. We can't even get all the street sergeants to carry tasers with them, which is sad in itself. The sergeants might not think that they will get into shit because they don't plan on going to any job that can develop into shit. These sergeants will show up when you get a parker, or a detail or a burglary paper job in order to log you. These are the same sergeants that when officers call for them to come to their job they get on the radio and whine about how they just sat down to lunch. These are the same sergeants that will show up in roll call and dump on the officers about how they are trying to blow off jobs by telling the dispatcher they just arrived at their lunch location. But that is a whole other problem. Anyway, all I am trying to say is that there are bosses that will get them guns and never show because they can't handle the pressure or the liability factor. Just a thought for all the officers out there that think that because sergeants have tasers, they got their guys' back. If you give these same supervisors bigger and better guns, they will act the same way-just see who shows up on the hot calls - won't be those white shirts I'm talking about - they will be too busy trying to figure out how not to show up - maybe go down in the station in order to finish the paper from the felony roadside. It's really sad-we are the police and can't even count on each other. I know who the sergeants are in my supposedly fast south side district. I would be interested in hearing if this is contained in my district or are there cowardly sergeants in other districts. Stay safe.

SWAT was on scene with gangs, gang intell. called and we were riding around with them. This was a predetermined hit that was monitored by tap. As far as rifles go, I agree I would like to see a few cars in the district get them, I would rather see you guys get HK MP5's thou, can't have that many po's carrying m4's around. More m4's raise the chances of a friendly fire that will be fatal, the 223 round from a m4 will go right through your vest and kill you. That's why I think the mp 5 is better this way if there is a friendly fire, you have a 50/ 50% chance of gettting hit in the vest which will stop the 9mm round.Don't tell me that friendly fires don't exist, just ask the po from gang intell. The had hugh cross fire potential. From the dept's stand point money wise the mp 5 takes 9mm rounds and is easy to operate.

The used to be a very knowlegeable guy in the Area 5 range (MK) that was drafting an order that would allow us to carry virtually ANYTHING pistol wise, that one would want to (within reason) as long as you qualified on a very stringent and I do mean stringent, qualification course. If you could demonstrate that you knew the weapon and how to handle it you were good to go. I took his qualification course with the weapon that I currently carry and I can assure you that it wasn't an easy course. But alas, he ran afoul of the Sgt. there and was dumped. He's now pushing a beat car in 016. Another waste of talent in the CPD. Then again maybe not. They will probably replace him with some young filly who knows nothing about guns, but is connected and will be easy to look at.

“Go get your shine box”—Awesome

Sorry off topic, From Tribune:

An alleged leader of the New Breed street gang facing charges stemming from a West Side shootout with police is in critical condition after stabbing himself more than 20 times as authorities tried to arrest him this week, prosecutors said today.

Lamel Burns, 29, of the 1300 block of South Troy Street, stabbed himself 20 to 30 times in the chest and neck Tuesday afternoon inside an apartment as police moved in to arrest him on murder charges, prosecutors said.

The above article clearly shows how these low class, bitch ass, punk ass, low life gangbangers act when it’s time to face the music. I hope this asshat is paralyzed or suffers from brain damage from this stunt so he has to live the rest of his pathetic life in prison shitting in his diaper. F*ck him and his parasitic family.

Maybe Extreme Makeover: Home Edition can go over to the 1300 block of South Troy and equip his house with special accommodations like what’s going on at the 1500 block of South Washtenaw for a ex-hype with six kids-What the F*ck is that all about. They couldn’t give a free rehab and a vacation to someone else more deserving? Quote from the news, “It’s a feel good story.” If you don’t believe me go and see for yourself.

Let us all recall, before casting a vote for a democrat, that during the Clinton Administration the port of Long beach was leased to our Chinese friends and they were caught bringing in overseas containers full of AK47's earmarked for the street gangs of America. These weapons are out there, in mass, and for those of you who do not know, an AK round will go right through your vest, and your squad car door too. The 223 rounds our SWAT guys have will not! I am all for district level "hard" cars, and those cars should have FN FAL 308 caliber rifles in them. A 308 will get the job done. I know it's easy to trash the SWAT program, but facts are facts, people are in the swat program because of who they know, not what they know. There are some great street cops in every district that would make wonderful
"hard" car candidates. I was at the Toys-for-tots match this past weekend in Harvey and I saw CPD guys from 018 and 016, the D unit, the range, and call back win everything. I didn't see any of the swat guys at all. This dept needs immediate response capability, and district level hard cars on all watches are the answer. The hard car officers should be given the same training opportunity that the swat guys get too. To those asshat bosses and liberal politicians who want to disarms us, handcuff us, and paint targets on our shirts...you have a vested interest in this city, if the cops cannot do their job, how secure do you think your shady real estate investments and bond ratings are? Be corrupt all you want, but at least be smart crooks, let the police keep a lid on the animals.

The one point missing in this conversation is the fact that the G.I. and SWAT guys had the drop on these guys. That is really about information and speed of communication and knowing that what kind of force to use against an anticipated situation before engaging the threat. I've seen suburban squad cars equipped with equipment that can comminicate with the world. We can barely communicate with each other. The new technology being forced upon us needs to be incorporated with new tactics on how to use it. Experience, Firepower, and Technology are all connected. They need to be used effectively together.

Maybe off topic, but somewaht related..
The department does what it can to maintian the right amount of "diversity" which means that people of a certain race or gender aren't required to do as well as people of other races or genders. The problem that arrises from that is that the people from the race or gender are required to be more than "above average" to qualify for this job. People of anotherrace or gender aren't required to score as well and are probably considered of "below average" intellect. What happens is you have 2 classes of individuals on this job, above average and below average.
(Geniuses and Idiots if to make it simple). What we have is Albert Einstien and Rainman and we have to decide which one should have a high powered rifle. What we need are peple of above average street smarts and average book smarts. What we have are really smart people trying to decide what the idiots should do. The rest of us are stuck somewhere in the middle without the the equipment and weapons we need.

NO FUCKING WAY!!!!

Daley doesn't care about coppers, hell he would rather have a funeral for a copper than have a copper kill a bad guy. If he could he would privitize us in a minute.
You think Daley cares about security for coppers and the citizens of Chicago? Guess again he dont give a fuck.

Look at O'hare Airport. Only 92 coppers and 8 Sgt.s assigned for all three watches. They are down 100 coppers and 10-15 Sgt's.
On midnights they are lucky to have 1 response car. Sgt's are working 2 shifts a day. When you work the wagon at O'Hare you are a 1 man car. Your partner is assigned inside a terminal. When you get a transport you have to go pick up your partner then go pick up the transport. What a way to run the police detail at the busiest airport in the world. Your lucky to have 8 coppers working on 1st watch out here. Lets not begin to mention all the thefts from the cargo that passes thru. What a joke. Yea we will get shot guns and rifles in the cars, dream on.

Being that the Dept.wouldn't trust people out on the street with long gun(s), what they should do is have W/C or D/C identify people on the watch who would train with these weapons (which would mean haveing a boss with half a brain), then have the weapons in a Sgt's car on the street (less chance of guns being grabbed from the car).Sgt.would respond to a scene along with P/O's that are trained, who would get the guns from the Sgt's car.

By the way, wonder how many here know what PO5-1313 is?

Stop the Glock shit. Beretta 92FS will get the job done. Better yet if you're well monied is any of the SIG pistols with the "K-trigger"-absolute technical superiority from the Tuetons! I find it incredibly frustrating that Mayor Daley is anti-gun, yet has an armed security detail assigned to him. Same goes for Governor Blago. Talk about a pair of hypocrites. Even though CPD was apparently not allowed to upgrade their firepower after the L.A. shooting, that incident did wake up a few other Illinois police departments. The Illinois State Police acquired AR15 and M4 rifles for about a third of it's patrol officers, who also carry a shotgun as part of their department issued equipment. Chicago police officers are more likely to encounter a situation similar to Los Angeles than the ISP. The top brass needs to convince Hizzoner of this, or the people of Chicago need to vote him out. Just like we need to vote out Blago next week. Stay safe.

Worked in the 009th District years ago when it was a retirement home. But I always was prepared in case a member of the "community" entered from the south (007) or the east (002). Although my beat was known for its barking dog complaints I still carried a shotgun in my trunk every day just in case. One day as I was taking it out of the squad at the end of the tour and the Field Lt. came up behind me and asked what was in the rifle case I just put in the trunk. The Lt. was Bill Dunn (deceased). After I fessed up, his advice to me was to make sure I kept it clean and ensured the ammo was good and made me promise to back me if I ever had to use it. Go figure a boss with balls. God Rest His Soul. When we get white shirts with enough stones to question the politicians maybe then we can get the fire power to stay even with the animals. Work the desk now so I interact with more bosses than ever before. I have one comment on the topic: WE ARE IN A WORLD OF SHIT. The two female whiteshirts got more balls then the remaining bosses on the watch.

14 months to go then I'm gone.

Having long guns in the Sgt.'s cars doesnt address the problem. Put in them where they are needed, in the Hands of Police officers. Same with the taser. By the time Sgt. arrives its over 80% of the time. If you want a solution to the problem, make it a solution. Not a half-ass attempt like have the Sgt. carry this and that. On top of it not being practically deployed this way, I find it an insult, as if Po's cant determine when to use it or the higher ups think we are stupid or something. Yet they allows us to carry guns albeit small ones-they still kill. This Dept. continues to amaze me!

Nov '01, .30 caliber carbine, 20 ga shotgun and a .45 cal handgun used in a shoot out with 011th district cops at Huron and Christiana.

The idiot who suggested that we are not out gunned and that we don't need heavy weapons is obviously not a police officer. PRobably a civilian police hater just trying to stir us up.

Every officer should have a wider choice of what type of weapon they want to carry. No offense to 7:15am but even if every watch had two or three people that were proficient and carrying weapons wont help. We need a choice. What is the single two man car going to do when then come into a situation where they are out gunned and need heavy weapons in a fraction of a second?

A bigger choice of weapons will allow those who are aggressive and "working" police feel a little safer. And those who don't care to possess such weapon can keep their .38 caliber pellet gun.

Because someone disagrees with you they're a "rookie"? What do you have on the job, SCC? 12, maybe 13 years. So what.

How about argue the point, not name call. And do a little research, why don't you - what do the other top 10 largest PDs carry in the district (or equivalent) patrol cars?

And come up with relevant examples to back up your position. Those first stories had nothing to do with what we might carry. The Marquez shooting lasted less than 10 minutes and regretfully Don was dead by the time help arrived. I was there, I know.

Daley doesn't want any PO hurt in a shooting, he just wants us enough insecure in our shooting ability to choose NOT to shoot. Yeah, it's about liability. You know, your tax dollars.

Quit pandering to the whackos if you want to try to make an argument.

No, they're a rookie because of their attitude toward ourselves and our co-workers. Whoever they are, they have little, if any street experience as evidenced by their comments and WAY fewer years than us if they think that this situation at Augusta and Kedzie was a "first time" occurence. We'll decline to answer the number of years we've been on, lest we reveal too much about our own identity.

How about argue the point, not name call. And do a little research, why don't you - what do the other top 10 largest PDs carry in the district (or equivalent) patrol cars?

As we stated back when we introduced moderated comments, we warned that you (the readers) might be viewing responses to things that never see the light of day. This is one of those times. If you could read the crap this asshole posted about us in terms of personnal attacks, attacks on our mother, attacks on our relationships with farm animals, attacks on our service to the city, you'd be disgusted. We weed it out so you don't have to wade through it. So everything this asswipe posts that we can identify goes into the garbage along with our old buddies who still haven't gotten the hint (the "delete" guy, the "update" guy, the misogynist who always seems hungry). We have enough to do what with work, family, side jobs, friends. We don't purport, not have we ever purported to be a fully researched website. We deal in opinion more often than not. We have ideas. Our readers have ideas. We throw them out there and provoke conversation. There are probably a few thousand people on the job right now better able to make the technical arguments we can't. There are undoubtedly hundreds, if not thousands, who deal with statisitics and information regarding who carries what in which departments. We simply distill and post what we hear in the districts and units into something people want to read. We've been corrected numerous times, lambasted plenty of others and learned quite a bit more often than not.

And come up with relevant examples to back up your position. Those first stories had nothing to do with what we might carry. The Marquez shooting lasted less than 10 minutes and regretfully Don was dead by the time help arrived. I was there, I know.

The first stories had EVERYTHING to do with why we need heavy weapons on the street. Readily accessible heavy weapons - not miles away in a Detective Area or SWAT car. We are all potential victims of heavy weapons and the only response in many cases is heavy weapons. Go back and re-read the post in relation to the comment that inspired it. A lot of people were at the Marquez shooting. And the other ones too. That's all we'll say about that.

Daley doesn't want any PO hurt in a shooting, he just wants us enough insecure in our shooting ability to choose NOT to shoot. Yeah, it's about liability. You know, your tax dollars.

We doubt Daley even gives it that much thought. To the mayor, the Police Department is actually a source of all sorts of potential embarassment and a convienient whipping boy that he can pretend to be reforming around re-election time

Quit pandering to the whackos if you want to try to make an argument.

Actually, whackos are (unfortunately) what drives a lot of this site. We filter out the obviously deranged stuff, but even the whackos make cognizant arguements occasionally and deserve to have their voice heard. Just not this whacko.

Is that more along the lines of how you'd like us to respond to stuff? We can be as insane or organized as the situation demands. Sane criticism is treated as such. Deranged people get slapped around.

I do apologize with the comments regarding your mother. My beef is with YOU not her. You pushed a button and I responded. I agree with some of your fellow bloggers, when not in agreement you resort to asshat, rookies, etc. You want a site to share views, but only if they are yours. So to you (SCC) you are an asshat too !

And once again, we prove you wrong, publishing criticism of ourselves. Now, please tell us what button we pushed? Point it out, show us where we were wrong, we'll either admit it or refute it.

As to the name calling, we didn't start it. You come here, call everyone lemmings, question our police careers and experience, and comment about our mother (god rest her soul.) Thanks for at least apologizing about that last one.

If you can't figure out why we don't reveal ourselves, you are truly lost and naive. Do you have any idea the shit we would be in? The crap we would be subject to? Let's not go there. A couple of us here have quite a bit to lose.

When pushed, we push back hard. And not to be a jagoff about it, but we don't even have to publish comments at all. We do this because we like it, not because we're obligated to, and it makes more sense to have some sort of debate rather than just have you read our ramblings day in and day out.

We offend a lot of people because we point out a lot of bullshit. But that doesn't make us a bullshitter. We're sure you can figure out the difference.

FWIW, I think y'all are not just good people, but you're freaking awesome. Your time and effort here are appreciated. Keep up the excellent work. You've got a thing here and it's more than obvious there are plenty who are thankful for having a place to vent (and I love reading those rants!).

You all be safe out there.

Never forget. . . Cook County Deputy Dwayne Baker. Murdered with an AK-47 on 12 OCT 2000 in the 002nd District at 50 E. 47th Street. Baker was mistaken for another during a gang hit carried out by the B.D.'s from 4555 S. Federal. Several prior unsuccessful attempts to murder the intended gang member by pistol failed, resulting in the AK-47 being used. Bernard MIMMS (killer) was recently sentenced to 95 years. Good riddance to MIMMS and all of the Robert Taylor Homes, the last of which was closed last week. Rest in Peace, Dwayne.

11/03/2006 09:35:15 PM

Look at Midway At Orange alert 5 coppers on a shift 1 in car 1 on desk leaves 3 for every area, plus we have some sgts that have loyalty with former C.O. Jimmy C. who cannot get along with new unit C.O. who is a great guy and boss. Midway is budgeted for 66 coppers we have 30 where is allthe extra money going in daleys pockets as usual?

Word of Caution: Don't carry ANY unauthorized firearms, period. The Powers to be will NOT back you up when push comes to shove. They will state that there are NUMEROUS firearms approved for CPD sworn members to carry upon qualification. They will wash their hands of you and you WILL be held liable for punitive damages in these LIBERAL COOK COUNTY COURTS.
So let the Old-Timers have their Grandfathered-In Hand Cannons, and the SWAT guys have their hi-tech toys. Get yourself a quality handgun and PRACTICE with it.. Live and learn, don't buy into the B.S. being told to you on some website. Deviate from the rules and regs. and you WILL pay for it. Wish it wasn't true, but it is. This is close to the most anti-gun place in the USA, if not the most. Please keep this in mind, learn tactics, weapon handling and retention, and call for back-up, DON'T BE A HERO, if it ties up cars, TOO FUCKIN BAD,You'll go home from work, not to the hospital or morgue, it's true about TOMBSTONE COURAGE. Too many good cops nationwide learned this the HARD WAY. Be SAFE !

I would have to agree with the other poster regarding heavy weapons and tazers...having them in supervisor's cars does NOTHING to address the problem of what do the troops do when the shit hits the fan? Rapids and tact/gang cars. But of course, of these cars (in every district) are designated as "heavy weapons" cars, then they can't afford to be held down on arrests....and you know how well that will go down with their co-workers. The SORT cars in SWAT/HBT simply put the cars on cruise control all day, eat all over the city, and don't think it doesn't cause some dissention among their own.

Did you really use "professional" and "SWAT" in the same sentence, PLEASE!!! this is CPD, those two words are not allowed to be on the same page let alone in the same sentence. You speak of professionals, I know LOTS! of patrolmen that could shoot rings around SWAT. What the Dept should do is disband SWAT and delegate all their duties to district level hard cars. And how do the HBT trainers accumulate thousands of hours of OT?

HBT to Marine Unit. Another political hack talking down to people. Let give you quote, "When I get home people 'll ask me, "Hey Hoot, why do you do it man? Why? You some war junkie?" You know what I'll say? I won't say a goddamn word. Why? They won't understand. They won't understand why we do it. They won't understand that it's about the men next to you, and that's it. That's all it is."

You know where I got that? Off the door from the old HBT room in the basement of the academy. A fictional quote from a fictional character in a movie about about shit you can only dream of. A bunch of fucking holster sniffers.

At least they haven't gone to the camo BDU's yet as some Departments have done. Those guys can REALLY play GI Joe. But I gotta admit, our guys still look like a bunch of wannabes. Thats because for the most part, thats what they are. Wannabes. Bandanas, knives on the shoulder, bloused boots. Where have I seen all that before besides on our SWAT guys? Oh yeah, in NAVY SEALS or some other fictional television show or movie. I'm waiting to see them all wearing hooded facemasks oneday. After all, isn't that what they do in the movies?

I dont doubt there are some good guys on our HBT team, or whatever the hell you call it. But like anything on this job it aint going to be entirely legit, or probably even close. Its probably all sons of Bosses anyways.

As for shooting? Ive always been a hell of a shot with all kinds of weapons and its never meant anything. No phone call, no weight with anyone, nobody else in my family on the job. I aint bitter about it, I knew the job wasnt legit when I first came on it. Hell, most of the minorities in my academy class never would have even graduated if the instructors didnt let them cheat on the tests.

So you HBT types?? Good for you. I wish you well and hope the job is everything you wanted it to be. Just do me one favor? Dont think your super cops compared to us. We all know better, especially those of us with so much time on the job.

We had one such nitwit come onto a job once in his fancy 4-wheeler "while the rest of us dogs are tooling around in pool cars with 150,000 miles on them" and start to tell us whats what on a street stop. Afterwards we were all laughing at him.

Theres nothing more pathetic then some nitwit who joins a Patronage outfit, gets somewheres due to his juice, and then spends his career thinking he's the cats ass of Policemen.
