Economy Keeps on Rolling

  • The unemployment rate dropped to a five-year low of 4.4 percent in October as employers added 92,000 new jobs flashing a picture of a strong labor market as the midterm elections draw near.

The latest report, released Friday by the Labor Department, showed that the civilian unemployment rate fell 0.2 percentage point from 4.6 percent in September. It marked the third month in a row that the politically prominent jobless rate declined.

Five. Year. Low. Five years ago it was October 2001. Mere weeks after the largest and most successful terrorist attack to hit this country. Unimaginable horror. Stock market tanks. Airlines in bankruptcy. Layoffs everywhere.

What a difference a half a decade makes.

Off topic...did you hear that people attending TARA training will now have to be in full uniform? I heard that a unitkiller, Lt. M.E. is gutting the program. Sgt. Haynes got dumped, Det. Zuley will be gone in a couple of weeks, and everybody else is looking for a new home while they bring in hockey players to teach terrorism.

Sorry, but I have to butt in with an unrelated but IMPORTANT issue:

Campell's Soup is holding a contest at Chunky.com for a soup can drive. The football team that gets the most votes on thier web site gets cans of soup donated to thier city's soup kitchens. They base the amount of cans donated on the total combined weight of the team.

So, go to the website and vote for the Bears. I think they deserve the vote anyway. Besides the Packers are kicking our butts in the voting polls.

Go to chunky.com and find "click for cans", you can vote once a day.

The election is 66 hours in the future.

People it is time to start telling everyone you know that they should vote on Tuesday.

Remind then that they should vote no for Judge Sheehan on the retention ballot and probably no for every other judge unless they have personal experience with him or her.

I also intend on voting for Peraica and Topinka because I have hopes they will not engage in corrupt actions and will not raise our taxes.

Blago is going to jail and Stroger is just a puppet for the machine.

Remember the only way we the people can take control is by voting.

This post was under the thread "Shootout on the West Side." I know you have attacked the media for naming officers in the past so this probably was just an oversight. Please delete this post for the sake of officer safety, especially since there is info regarding possible retaliation against the police by the New Breeds resulting in a "just cause" being initiated this week. We can never be too protective of our privacy! Thanks.

Remember voters, gun confiscation is the 1st step toward a Facist state(along w/small groups of elitist scum that are close to the lawmakers that keep getting richer). Remember to honor the Polish Jews whose rose up in their ghetto and fought the NAZI Army w/stolen pistols and molutovs, by NOT voting for these gun-grabbing liberal pukes. Also remember they're trying to grab weapons that are already legal.I can see if they want to grab full-autos or silenced guns which are already illegal. People like Blago are worried about a middle-class uprising when these(our) pensions tank!!! To all u puke liberals: be careful(dont trip) getting on those cattle cars on the way to the gas chambers!!! Why does pro-choice only apply to abortions and not our guns? Go Judy, Tony & Peter!!!!!

If you plan on voting on November 7, and if you see the name "Judge Rodney Brooks" on the ballot, please vote NO for retention. This is the judge who let Jonathan Tolliver go free just a few days before he shot (and killed) Chicago Police Officer Michael Ceriale." "So please pass this message along to everyone you know. I appreciate your consideration of this request."

Birkett is a good guy. He is very Pro Police, aka recent Roselle, IL incident w/ would be rober getting offed by the owner of the store and he, with out qualms, called it justified ASAP. He HATES Lisa Madigan. Oh, and he was also a golden gloves boxer, which makes him a bad ass. But seriously, He loves the Police and he will not be a Political Pawn for any one. He's just a normal down to earth guy who we can relate to. Remember this on the 7th.

Speaking of the open enrollment...I have Unicare HMO but I'm trying to decide whether or not I should switch to BC/BS PPO. I always hear horror stories about HMO's but so far, I haven't really had any bad experiences. However I'm in my mid forties and I know that I'll be seeing my doctor more often the older I get. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Off topic but important! We have all seen the sickness of the Islamic Nuts! I just watched another documentry on the Muslim world and all that they talked about is Islam ruling the world and death to anyone who is not a muslim. Watch yourself and your neighbors. Don't trust anyone who is a muslim. If we don't stand up against these fools we will pay many years from now. Islam is the religion of hate, so we must take them seriously when they say that they want the entire world to be Muslim. Muslims are not are friends, please be carefull around them. God Bless!

Before some muslim fool denounces my last comment, I would like to point out that we never hear any comments from the "peacefull muslims" denouncing their majority that hate the rest of the non-muslim world! The "peacefull muslims" are kept quiet because they are politicians and know it's too early to show they're hatered toward the non-muslim world.

Speaking of the open enrollment...I have Unicare HMO but I'm trying to decide whether or not I should switch to BC/BS PPO

I tried HMO years ago. After having Dr's leave due to lack of payment by HMO, leaving me high and dry with a family the problematic need for referrals also helped to drive me away, along with less and less HMO options. It can also be problematic if your out of town and in need of a referral, from what I have heard so far over the last few years. It would also help if other's could plug in their plus and minus thoughts on the issue of choice.

I have been BC/BS PPO covered for years with family and now without. I do utilize medical benefits. I like the freedom of choosing the PPO Doctor along with referrals which they may need to provide. I find very few obstacles. Per contract with BC/BS you don't pay your
co-pay up front you wait till your billed. Natch you make the deductible at the beginning of the year via visits, etc. Non-Generic meds can be expensive. Ask Dr. for a 30 day sample if a new med. is needed and to be tried or fork out $30+ at pharmacy. Try to get samples from Dr's. whenever you can as a new med. since the med may not be agreeable. This way your not forking out another $30+ 30 days later. Also use caution in E.R. as you have no control over the attending physician who more than likely is not a PPO Provider, out of network is considerably higher. If ya gotta go via E.R. ya gotta go.

They all have their plus and minus points. BC/BS provides a wider choice of Dr's and better freedom from required referrals, some what more costly. BC/BS in a retirement cost frame though would be a financial struggle for most, I would imagine. It all comes down to your needs, usage, cost, what you can afford to pay or are willing to pay along with your personal preference. I'm satisfied even though it's been down sized from years ago. Now Dental and Eye ughhhhhhhh from the past to the present still struggling with that issue every year. Still, I like freedom of choice and I'm willing and able to pay for it at this time.

Blue Cross I can get exam, lab with blood work in Blue Cross PPO/network with very expensive top Doctor and pay 40.00. This amount can be inter mixed with needed various injections. Cost depends on what your being treated for your needs and who you would prefer to see.

if its true that over 50% of the jobs created in the last 6 yrs were housing related then the economy is in trouble.
its a bad time to be selling housing or cars or to be supplying those who build them.

Remember the figure printed for unemployment is only the amount of people collecting unemployment (I used to work for the VA's office at an unemployment facility when I got out of the Army). The number of people actually collecting unemployment is usually only 25% of the actually number of unemployed people,.......basically, if you don't qualify for the check, you're not unemployed in the "G'S" eyes.

For the dental, always pick a PPO, it's easier to find a good doctor than it is to find a good dentist. Find a good dentist and found out which program he operates out of (HMO or PPO), but the PPO is usually a better bet. I'll pay more for a good dentist.

Home improvement business slows with housing market

The slowdown threatens to shut down First Choice Flooring for good. "We haven't seen it this bad in 10 years," she said. "I'm considering selling it because of the market."

Trisler's First Choice Flooring is one of several businesses feeling the chill of the "cooling" housing market.

Sales of existing homes are down 33 percent and applications for new-home construction permits are slowing sharply. The declines are causing sales to drop at many local businesses that supply residential housing with products from carpets to sod for front lawns.

"Everybody is feeling it," said Molenaar, executive vice president for the California Professional Association of Specialty Contractors' San Diego chapter. "They just have to weather the storm."

Dick Marsala, a salesman for Direct Carpet Sales in San Marcos, said sales at his store are down at least 35 percent from last year.

"I can't figure it out," he said. "The economy's supposedly great and people are working.

An Encinitas home decorations store owner, who didn't want to be named, said store traffic has dropped from about 500 people per day three years ago to 10 today."People are scaling down," the owner said.

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Home prices will fall 10% on average in 2007 and it will likely take three years to clear out the huge inventory of empty unsold homes currently in the market, according to a UBS report released Monday.

A surge in new construction and a pullback in demand led to the inventory glut that's currently plaguing the sector.

UBS analyst Margaret Whelan estimated that the industry overbuilt to the tune of 900,000 homes between 2003 and the first half of 2006. "Most of those homes are vacant," which means they'll rely more heavily on price discounting to get sold than if they were homes with people living in them, she said, during a conference call Monday.

"It will take about three years to shift all of that excess inventory," said Whelan. As a result, she expects housing starts to fall 15% in 2007 from 2006 levels.
