GPS - Sound Off

We noticed in a comments section a week or two ago that someone posted a story that told the tale of a couple of cops from SOS who were tracked by GPS going somewhere they weren't supposed to be going. Their sergeant called them on it and these softballs lied, claiming that they were on their way to their mission instead of on the way to who knows where. We don't know if they were on this transfer order, but we wouldn't be surprised. We did a little inquiring around and heard that every vehicle in SOS is now trackable by a GPS system. Big brother is here and operational.

We can see that this is going to change police work as we have known it and experienced it. We'd speculate that there won't be any more laying down on jobs - if you leave a job, there better be a code issued. Same thing with traffic stops taking a little longer than usual so as to get a little "travel time" to lunch locations. We don't even want to think of all the holes that midnight cars could disappear into that are about to be general knowledge. And should they GPS everything that's out there, the closest car is going to get dinged every time something pops up on the OEC geo-mapping systems rather than whoever is up getting the jobs. Lord knows what this is going to do to plainclothes units or specialized ones. Anyone care to speculate?

Does anyone have any reccomendations for .38 2 in snubs?
I currently have the old 158 gr +P lead hollow points the dept used to use.
I see now theyre using jacketed rounds, but for a 4 inch gun

Hate to say it, but we've only brought this on ourselves. Too much poor response in the Districts, spending waaaay too much time down on routine assignments. It was bound to happen. People had better start to understand that the old ways are all but gone. Everyone out there in a beat car now will HAVE to work for a living, every day.
I see people in the near future being gigged so often for f**king off on jobs that they will simply have to resign, being off so many days without pay. Dogs beware, there is very little wiggle room for you while you spend the day pushing your responsibilities (and your assignments) on other people.

GPS or a new dumptruck, hmmm, GPS or a new dumptruck? It'll take them a little while to outfit all of the vehicles.....probably do them with each brake job or overhaul......y'know 250,000 some odd miles. I think the GPS's on the horses will probably be the funniest (a sarcastic note for those of you unable to tell). This screws the working beat car that hops from t-stop to t-stop trying to get its stats up too. Productivity at a new all time low. I guess my person with a gun calls are going to be where I get mine now............

Good idea but the city will not insure the retirees or cover them if they are injured in the performance of duty. I can't think of one retiree that should take the city up on this offer should a disaster happen. Stay tuned for the special order coming soon.

About a month ago, I was given a job at the most Northwest part of the district. I accepted the job and advised the dispatcher that I was coming from the Southeast end.

Her response: I Know, I saw that, Thanks for helping out.

When I called and aksed the zone what that meant, I was put on hold due to a foot chase on the air(understandable reason to be put on hold, although I never got an answer)

FYI:
Its here, whether we want to believe it or not.
Lets not give the dept a reason to suspend or terminate one of us.
Be safe.

If it could, its an officer safety benefit.

I have no problem with a GPS on my squad car, as long as they don't have a problem with me taking extra loooong on my jobs to give our citizens the absolute BEST police service. I'm sure others will do the same. Watch for sergeants to have a fit because they have to handle our jobs due to the daily backlog. If we all start following all the silly nonsense written in the General Orders, we'll drive 'em nuts!!

Say goodbye to the days of two hour lunches, or lying down on jobs. Also you will not be allowed to have any fun what so ever. If it is determined that you had fun on this job you will be severly disciplined. This means no laughing, no smiling, no cheerful attitudes. Additionally, it will be implimented immediately, that no officer will show any signs of joy, and if they do we will cut manpower, so you can work harder, to break you spirit. THIS POLICE DEPARTMENT IS DETERMINED TO BE THE MOST PRODUCTIVE, WHILE UTILIZING THE LEAST AMOUNT OF RESOURCES. YOU WILL BE ASSIMILATED

GPS is coming citywide SOS is the pilot. The technology is cheaper now and they are looking at it as a good management tool. The Sgt or above will be able to tell where his cars are on the PDT. I don't know why people weren't expecting this in this day of accountability.

The only ones that will be pissed are the dogs and asshats that are never where they are supposed to be in the first place. No more sneaks to the credit union, the neighboring district bar zone to babe/guy watch, or that lunch location that is too far out of the district.

Face it, the city actually wants you patrolling where you are supposed to be. They want their money's worth from you. The cameras are coming too and not just in 005 and 016. Get used to being miked and recorded when you get out of the car. You have two choices, suck it up and accept it or quit.

I'm a sergeant in patrol on the westside. I have not been informed about any GPS yet, and I have not seen any hard evidence of it. However, I will mention that the other night I rode on some job and I did not come up on the air at all (no dispatcher recognizing my voice without me giving beat). BUT, shortly after responding, the job miraculously popped up on my PDT. We have the new computers and brand new impalas. I chalked it up to a typo by the dispatcher....but who knows??? Be careful people. FUCK! No more bullshitting on the logs, dammit!

You're making it sound like only beat cars that answer calls are dogs. What about the units, tact, gangs, dics...all those others who tend to go outside the city for their 2 hour lunches? What about them that when their called upon to handle a shooting on the southside, they get their when they can from lunch at faaaar northside? You say everyone in a beat car has to work for a living? Buddy, beat officers actually stay and work for 8 1/2 hours while everyone else seems to work less. I doubt the reason why this is happening is because of backlogs in a district; it's mainly do to everyone else who does not work a beat car disappearing from the city or area on a regular base.

To the people that think they wont put GPS in all cars you should be doing stand-up.

Do you think the dept. would set themselves up for law suits from all angles.
Sure they can see you f#$%ing up, but they can also find you if you
don't answer the radio because something happend to you.
Along with many other reasons.

As to the cost, the dept. can lease the units and they can be moved from old to new vehicles.

A P.O. that was present for the instalation told me that it took less then 30 minutes. It was installed by a contractor, who came to the unit; they did the entire unit in a few days.

By the way, when everyone gets their new blueberries they too can be used as GPS trackers. Do a google search of GPS and you to can do this with your kids cell phone. All for $5.95 a month.

Just do your job and you don't have to worry.

All I would have to do now is pull up a gps position of each one of my cars during my tour and log them where they are at. Gives me a whole lot of time to show all the pretty ladies my new sgts stripes while my troops are out there forced to work extra hard!!! I'm joking of course but I know some of you out there see the truth of my statement. More work for the grunts, less for the bosses. 018's, 019's sgts will be thrilled by all the fur they can pull in now. That's right I said it.

DO NOT BELIEVE THEM. make sure it finds it's way into your contract that they CANNOT initiate discipline solely on gps results. that's all i have to say. be careful. my agency is a living h-e-l-l right now because of this stuff. it's not aiming at slugs, but at men and women trying to do their jobs...stay safe all.

This benefit showed what the Police Department really is. This was a wonderful display of "Family" support and needed at a time when the morale within this department is very low. Anyone who attended this benefit should be proud of the Chicago Police Department and the support we show for each other when the going gets tough. A little bit of charity goes a long way and we only have each other. It sure felt good to be a Chicago Cop yesterday. Thanks!

HERE IS A HELPFUL HINT:

If you wrap your whole car in aluminum foil, it will defeat their ability to use the GPS on your vehicle.

I took the GPS off my car and attached it to the married boss' girlfriend's car. Now when he runs my GPS he thinks I am cheating on the woman he is cheating on. Confuses the hell out of him.

And don't think it will be too long before our personal CPD handheld radios will also have GPS. So the old trick of one partner dropping off his partner at his girlfriend's house won't be possible unless he leaves his radio with the partner.

When they started installing GPS on all these cars, they did the same on the CTA special cars. The sgt I worked for said he was called into the bosses office to check it out and he said that the GPS system tracks every car by a different colored light indicator with reference to time. It's been a while but it was something like a green light is showing when you are moving and have been doing so for 15 mins. Next there is a yellow light when you are sitting for 15-30 mins, and a red light when sitting longer than thirty mins. Now this may be a different set-up for CTA special, but this is what I heard, and the SGT had no reason to lie to me.

everyone relax! Ok, so walsh construction is gonna install these little blippies. They are all going break soon anyway. Plus, coppers and computers just dont mix.

Common phrases in the stations: "crap! it froze!" "Hey, where did my stuff go?" "Wheres that one page with the stuff to get me to the other page so I can get cta specail?" "Umm, the state of Illinois symbol is missing here....now how the hell do I run a name?!" "Damn! the buttons fell off the pdt!"

I remember when Lojack was first installed in some squad cars....it worked fine...beeped like hell...only problem was, no one knows how to work it.

Also, this department is probbalby going to make it a pain in the ass for a sgt to discipline a po for not being where he is suppossed to be....download the map, log the event, send six copies to senior birdshit on hat, eight copies to eagles on sleeves....how many sgts really want to deal with that?

This will all blow over...or.....we are all screwed.
