Worst Places to Work
So we were looking over the transfer order today. And we were wondering what must be the worst place to work. We gleaned a bit of info just by scanning that fax message:
- Seven officers left SOS on this order. No word on how many were dumps or how many were people who just had enough of the BS that is still brewing over there. But that isn't the most interesting movement in the Department
- Last month, there were three openings for Sergeant in the 005th District and ten openings for PO bids. According to what we heard and read, no one bid for any of the openings. Not only did no one bid, but three more Sergeants left the district.
Is anyone downtown paying any attention to the fact that everyone with any time on the job or any pull to speak of is leaving 005 as fast or faster than rats deserting a sinking ship? We did see one person headed into 005 as a management pick, but as they came from O'Hare, we figure they must be following the Lieutenant that the new commander brought along. We mean, what other reason could there be to leave O'Hare for 005? It can't be the commute.

Losing Capt. CW would go a long way towards making being assigned to 005 a pleasurable experience, but for now, she seems untouchable.
I'm sure Cmdr. Williams is making every attempt to turn morale around, but he's only been there a few days short of a month. Hopefully, the new tact Lt. can turn things around there with the tact and gang teams, especially the gang teams. Lousy stats from both of them, and not much leadership from either Sgt (Sgt. MM is the worst of the two...never around, next to no leadership skills). Lots of decent coppers already out there, micromanaged into submission by CW, who has been the de facto Commander for most of this year. Maybe this is what 35th st. wants. No bumps in the road, no scandals in the making, and absolutely no initiative either. Good luck to the new leadership in Pullman, you've certainly got an uphill battle out there.
what ever 5 has had leave i'll bet u double the people are tring to leave the shit hole known as the 8th district but the commander will not anyone leave.

Scc...you've been around!! The post should ask "Anywhere good to work". I've been around, too. I've been more than around the block, specialized units (20 years), etc...You never hear anyone say anywhere is a great spot anymore.

how about a dist where the c/o dresses with a hoodie and walks around trying to get robbed? he does all this without anyone knowing, balsy sure, for a p/o not a c/o. to make things worse he orders tact guys to lock up 5 kids from beverly for d.o.p.w, one of which was a lt's kid, to which the c/o didn't care and had him locked up anyway. nice job c/o, can't wait till your kids grow up and they try to call their dad for help and the police on the scene say sorry you were a c/o who never made it past the rank of Sgt., so your kids are on their own. what goes around comes around!!!!
Commander Williams is said to be really bad, So bad in fact that the folks who work in 005 wish they had Capt. White back. The area those P.O's work is shitty enough, why not put a decent boss there to help ease the pain, not add to it. Or mabey not

a rat with time on the job says... 005 is a nice place to visit if you don't mind the commute, the 1st Watch is an outstanding group of young agressive coppers and the W/C takes care of his Sgt's.
005/1st watch is great! The sgt's will help when you need it and they don't micro manage. The p/o's are like family. Our W/C looks out for us always. If there is a problem in 005 look at the other watches not midnights.
The new commander of 005 will run that place into the ground. He is an incompentent, arrogant jerk. His father, who was a good guy, is tight with Beavers and Stroger, and pushed City Hall to get him promoted. Between him and Capt. CW it is the place to stay away from.
I'd hate to be a Fillmore zoo keeper, uh I mean "ranger".
The reason that the individual transferred into 005 from O'Hare was to attend Reverend Meeks' church!

005 is by far the worst district in the city to work, the only brightspot is midnights, the Captain is great and the coppers are out there working, the other two watches are horrible in every aspect, bosses, coppers and citizens! the people bailing out every period should be a good indicator; starting to see the same in 006. 003 is also bad, 004 is the bright spot of the southside. Good coppers, bosses and a good variety of work there,they are also always short-handed, just a pain to get to.
I think 008 is turning into a real shithole place to work. Been here 20+ years and it's going down fast. The 009th district should be re-mapped to give us some relief too. All them jobs on Kedzie should be 009's. Let us start at Pulaski. That would be fair. It's just too much to handle anymore and I'm glad I'm ready to ditch my monkey suit. Sorry kids, 008 is too big and the exempts don't watch your back no more. There was a time where we were proudly called "Copland." Now..."Immigrant Land"...See the trajedy? You may not agree, but at least consider re-mapping the 008 district huh?
Of course CW is untouchable...She was a "rat" for IAD and the Feds. That says a lot for her character...LOL
Area 5 has had about 20 Detectives leave in the past year by transfer, retirement, or a phone call to get out. In the Detective Division people usually stay were they are at unless trying to move closer to home after being assigned out of dicks school. It does not take a brain surgeon to figure out it that Dean the Queen has ruined that place. To all the dicks in school beware!

Don't be so quick to pan 005. The coppers out there are quick to help each other out. Afternoons, Capt. RW was the working police as she moved up the ranks. She's good people. The Capt. on midnights is top shelf, and the guys do a good job for him, and he is always looking out for his people. Most of the issues having to do with 005 are with day shift, and everyone (including headquarters) knows WHO the problem is. With regard to the new cmdr., He is what he is, a child of privilege and daddy's clout. He's either make this newest assignment a go, or sink on his own. Give him a chance, he hasn't been there long. Maybe he can get CW and her micromanagement syle under some sort of control, thereby saving the District from total collapse. And there are worse places to work....like 008!
Poor response all over the place, and it would appear that the supervisors just don't give a damn, all the way to the top over that way.

From what I hear 009 would be a good place to work minus for the DC.
The grass is always not greener on the other side. The 018th District everyone thinks is a great place to work but when I was there, the supervisors micro-managed everything. Always riding on every job they could just to look busy. I hated my job when I was there. Dogs fill the District from the Southside, many pushing their work off on others. Coding jobs out 19B just to have the same job assigned to another car and them having to handle it properly with paper etc. Some of the most laziest coppers I ever seen always down on ficticious traffic stops, station assignments for hours, and car washes on rainy days. Its unbelievable. I'm glad I got promoted and out of there. It just got worse when they dumped those guys from Housing over into the District. The DOG quotient went up greatly at that time. My advice avoid 018 at all costs until it gets better supervisors who will get on the Dogs. Maybe then they will leave and it'll get better, until then AVOID 018. If you don't believe me I was there, and I'm sure most won't, go there and find out first hand how miserable you'll be. Then remember "I was warned!!!"

This place has been a shithole the minute Capt. CW got there, and has been going further down hill since! There were times where a PAR form couldn’t be found in 005, they were all being used to transfer out! 60-70 PAR forms to leave a period!
Most of the Sgt's are great, but fighting a huge up hill battle. Maybe this is what 35th st. wants.

005 is not a bad district if you want to work. A lot of stuff there. However, the W/C on 2nd watch and W/C on 1st watch are horrible. You can't work late because of those two idiots who will make your OT horrible. Many PO's left because of Cpt. on 1st watch and not talking about the famous Cpt. CW. The 3rd watch Cpt. is ok.

I left 005 for many reasons; one would be horrible mngt. , then Horrible watch commander on midnights. and then the desk secretary who ofcourse is in call back right now....midnite crew is great but thier boss is dumb...he likes his crew but screws every other watch and ...he lives 3 doors down from the station, the ghetto neighborhood where his son was badly beaten because of his m/2 status

I can't say for certain, because I've never had to work for either one of them, but I hear lots of praise for the W/C's of 3rd and 1st watches in 005. The officers assigned to both of those watches, as a whole, seem to very loyal to the Capts. who head them up. It sounds like there are some sour grapes with regard to the 1st watch Capt.; maybe he had to crack a whip on a few buttheads. God knows every watch has a few special cases. But from what I've seen, I would have to rate both Capts. from the 3rd and 1st watches as very competent. It's been my experience that people who post the most negative stuff about others here seem to have quite a few issues themselves...and we all know somebody on the Job who has screwed up, and refused to own up to their mistakes, despite the fact that their screwup was painfully obvious to all around them.
i work in a good place but i aint tellin you, cause then youll use your clout to get my spot... so forget you Jack!

It's a horrible place to work.
The restaurants are all crappy.
The bosses all are nasty and mean and never let you use comp time.
The parking lot is waaaay to big and it doesn't have a garage like lots of the new stations. They tore down mosta the jects but the mopes all stayed in the neighborhood. It's worse than in the '80's.
And the beetches are all horrible and ugly with bad jibs and they all stink like "homeless" peoples in the summer.

How about the civil service Lts. still in 004 who were lts or sgts 18 years ago who do not suck or swallow good enough to be a captain. 005 five is shot every one of the captains is merit, Merit all the way, one has three merit promotions. When you screw up you are all a lone. Look at Tac Sgt who was caught stealing time as a det from the department. Also the 0ther merit sgt. who brags about his merit heritage.
Watch when Meeks walks in he is immediately escorted into the watch commanders office.
Just look at the great coppers who have left 005 in the past five years. Ever since Briggs retired its been a revolviong door. shit on shit equals shit. Remember how retired Sgt. VP was railroaded after that domestic? THe POLICE ADMINISTRATION hates the 005th District.
the best and worst places to work, depends in large part on the bosses there; having said that, does Cline (and his minions) decide who to place in leadership positions based on competence, experience, and education, OR .....personal loyalty, political (race, gender, ethnicity, friendship, familial, and Democratic party) considerations, or orders from the 5th floor....unit morale means absolutely nothing to 35th Street.
Roy is getting promoted in April. 009 is by far the best district.

Clearly, the naysayers here know nothing about Capt. RW. She has had some good jobs, and has performed well at all of them. I worked with her when she worked in the fightin' 004th many years ago, and she handled herself well. True, she may have had some people help her get to some good positions
(I think she was a Lt. in 018 for a while, and she also did a stint as the Area 2 Gang/Gun team Lt.), but she performed well at every spot she has ever held down. And no, I'm not a woman, and no, I'm not a minority. Don't sell all the women short on this job. Some of them have performed admirably, and Capt. RW is definitely one of them. And as far as the Capts. being "merit," there aren't many "real" Capts. left on this job
(Charles Dulay is about the last one left that I know of, and he was promoted to Cmdr. this year).
Any push to your career after the rank of Lt. is going to be a gift.
People who know Capt. RW and who have worked with her will tell you that she's earned her double bars.
Lt. John Graeber is a solid guy, and he would be an excellent choice for a commander. Having said that, he just may be what Narcotics needs to hold on to

Your restaurants are safe in 018. So are the yuppie broads that look down their nose at the police. I have stayed away from 018 for 15 years and will continue to do so for the next 14 years. It's simple really. I want to work with the police and not a bunch of bimbos and wannabe male dancers.
Lt Graeber is a great boss, a working coppers boss, these rumors of him making commander have been out there for a while. He definitely deserves it, just a shame he will likely get sent to some hole of a district where a bunch of dogs work.

You guys have it real tough there in 008. If you got out of your car once in a while the 008th District might not have gotten so busy! When a copper calls for help and has to wait 20 minutes for a car to show up, that's ridiculous! Won't shed a tear for those of you in 8 that have to get out of your car.
ofcourse I was talking about T.B. The f/1 on desk in 005. I don't know who she was blowing, but it had to be somebody. For some reason Cpt. RW would not listen when people bitched because they couldn't work with their partners....U asked for 1800hrs car she put u on 1500hrs car and if u asked for 1500 then u find yourself on 1800 car....And NO, she is not skinny....HUGE ATTITUDE
006--as with every district in the city, some say it sucks, some say it's great. I think it's great.
3rd watch may have a sometimes screaming Cpt., get over it. Give him activity, and he'll leave you alone. 1st and 2nd watch Cpts. are great too and our Lt's on all watches are too golden for words.
Back up on 3rd watch is great, if you need another car, you'll get five. Our assist is so good, one of our dispatchers told a new guy in the district (don't know where he came from) that was screeching for more cars, "You're in 006, more cars are coming!" (and we were).
We may have problems among ourselves, but we don't take them on the street. We back each other up no matter what. What we all need to remember, is not who has pissed us off in the last 29 and a day, but that we are all one another has out there. If we can't depend on each other, who the hell can we depend on? The shit bag citizen? with a gun?
Will those of you that just want to bitch, set up your own blog? Some people who work this job happen to think, it's just a job and they all have SOMETHING that sucks about them.
Did you get paid on the 1st? Will you get paid on the 16th? What are your chances of getting laid off? Did you have to go to your boss and ask for your last raise? The p/o's on midnights are great and backed each other up cause we had nobody else. we were all in that shithole together. for sure the worst district for sooo many reasons. midnights had a great crew of p.o's and sgt's and a good capt. in my opinion. i'm sure the A/2 dicks would say the same about 1st watch in 005.

LoL! Listen, we've had many visiting W/C's come to the district and laugh during rollcall, stating they have more RAPID cars then we have total assigned. Sad but true. Can't do "real policework" when you are swamped in calls all night. So, there's your answer, tough guy.

Right now, 022 is becoming a terrible place to work as a cop. Too much scandal and press. Best place to work? Hmmm...Yeah, my hats off to our brothers and sisters in 009 and 010. They got it down! Hell, 009 is in the news every week anymore...Lots of action.

I don't know much about 008 but one thing I learned from my own experience, is that coppers from 008 have bad reputation for not helping out other coppers-on or off duty. Completely blew me off one time and sgt. had to take their job..shame on ur self. i know 008 has a lot of cops who live there, but they are COPS, just like you, who Will back you up when you need it, so get your ass out of the car and help out like we're always suppose to, remember, this job is ours and we make decisions-you can get fired when you don't make one...shitheads might not deserve it....but US, c'mon now...u might be in trouble one day and who will help you out then?????

I've been in 006 for a while, worked all three watches and tact. Not withstanding the commander, and a certain 1st watch sergeant, we have a great bunch of whiteshirts. We work for our Captain, not for the guy on the 2nd floor. 2nd watch had a lot of dead weight, but with the exception of 2 dogs, everyone has each others backs. Last Sunday morning, the entire watch was involved in a foot chase. How many of you have seen your Captain chasing a guy down the street?

I am not the writer of the original entry. However, I do have 20 years on the job. I have worked in both 011 and SOS. Did you know that SOS used to be located in the 011th district?? It is YOU that does not have 15 years on the job and your spelling ability is limited, at best.
006 IS WITHOUT A DOUBT THE WORST PLACE IN THE CITY TO WORK THE LAST 3 YEARS RUNNING. WAIT A MINUTE THE LAST 3 YEARS THAT COINCIDES WITH THE CURRENT DISTRICT COMMANDER'S TERM OF SERVICE. Doty is currently on his 5th Tactical Lt. , Needs 3 Sgts to run the Community Policing Office (as he can't get a LT. to take the spot), when a class of LTs graduated had all 7 LTs in District bid out, and is approaching a loss of 40% of the manpower eligible to bid in his 3 years. Which is a large reason that working coppers (white, hispanic, or black) are not allowed to leave any longer citing manpower or the ever convinient "screw up" of the PAR form.Couple that with the fact that the Commander prefers incident free, initiative challenged, code givers/report takers has led to District being over run by DOGS and as a result the District has led or is near the top in 7 of the 11 top crime reporting categories. Most of the white shirts try valiantly to overcome the Commander's lack of Operational experience & initiative. In a time that has now seen the demise of public housing and the spread of impoverished citizens through out the southside and with that the criminal elements that fell out of the projects it has made for tough times, which need tough answers, and thinking outside the box, instead we are handicapped with a District Commander who has only an eye on one thing his next promotion and is willing to dam all in his way to achieve such. One of the biggest examples of this is actually the differences in the 3 watches, midnites has always traditionally been filled with sleeping DOGS who are more worried about their $15/hr side job (whatever happened to Court as your side job at $45/hr?) and in fairness the last year on midnites has seen an increase in working police (dumped from 3rd watch), 3rd Watch is just disgusting evidently there is enough manpower for 4-6 blue shirts to be "detailed" daily to the front office on various adminstrative assignments (SAFETY GRIEVANCE OR CONTRACT VIOLATION(S)). Also there would be the matter of the POs detailed to the Area mission & saturation teams for the past 2 years with 3 years on the job, whatever happened to those spots being posted every 3 periods like they have been for 20 years? As for 2nd Watch 50% of the watch does more work 10-99 then the youngsters on the other watches could do 10-4 at this point, they have earned the right.BOTTOM LINE---- 006 has a Commander who has no clue operationally, violates the contract at will and as a result of P.O.s ballessness to stick up for the contract he has jeopordized Officer Safety.

A small comment on all Districts:
001- Ex Southside brothers and sisters lookn to eat 4 free.
002- No projects/slowed down since. POs think its still busy.
003- still the worst in the city.
If u do work there don t look for backup they aint coming.
004- 1/3 black 1/3 spanish 1/3 white and the officers (depending on their race just protect their own if any.
005- The 100's rock, even the officers who dont get out of the car come in with guns.
006- Every copper thinks hes undercover brother in that district.
007- Young and disorganized. Hearts in the right place of some of these officers but have no clue.
008- POs call it West Englewood (its still a long way. No officers patrol east of cicero. They patrol the no crime side.
009- Daleys puppets.
010- Everybody is screwing each others partners and getting divorced. No patrol on the black side. Coppers take care of thier own on the taco side.

Backup is usually always available. Beacause we're on our own radio zone, there's little clatter on the air, like it is when two hot districts share a zone (like zone 10, zone 8). The watch commanders are pretty good for the most part. The 1st watch Lt. is kind of young, but decent. The new commander seems like a real decent guy, and I hear from the other watches that he rolls on calls on all three watches. He seems to be around quite a bit, and speaks to everyone. The tact and gang teams are ok too. I don't know who is saying 003 is so bad, me and my partner and most of the guys I work with love it here.
We also have some nice stretches of homes in 003, and many of the people we deal with over here actually like the police.

Some of the po's are political here, but the majority are lone wolves that beat to a different drum and basically tell the entire administration to jump in Lake Michigan. I'm not too sure 5 is the hell hole that everyone is making it to be. There is no argument that the entire area is a hole, it is ghetto all around, and that is without question. The only ones who would argue are the African American cops who were foolish to buy a home there.
Once you look past the location, it is a good place to work. There is a lot going on, some times too mmuch going on, but it will keep you going. The problem is, a lot of the cops there have less than two years, and as soon as they learn how to do things they jump to the TRU Unit. The 5th district has the most cops detailed out compared to any district in the city. I know you will say this proves your point of it being a bad place to work, but look deeper. The problem the cops there have is that, believe it or not, after 2-3 years they start getting burn out. If the district was full staffed a lot of cops would be able to get a break. As it stands now, you are still able to get your CU when you ask for it - the W/C's will always help the worker - even CW! The dogs, well that is the same in EVERY district - if you do not work, why do you think a W/C will let you take time over a working cop??
All 3 watches have good SGT's to work for, and 1st and 3rd have excellent WC's to work for. The SGT's might be new, or newer but they ALL were the Police before. Sure days has CW, and the DC is a political hack, but so is Todd Stroger, and AA's voted for him in flocks. So, a political hack is par for the course in this area of the city, black, white or hispanic.
How do you judge a good ditrict..? BACK UP - bottom line. While it is nice to eat in your own distirct, and have nice places to go, it still is more important to have good back up. If you disagree, you have not been the police too long, or around when something was set off. They do back you up in 5, on ALL the watches.
I have been all around the city, in a Unit, and I have been in three districts...IMO, 5 is not the worse place to be.
006 has unbelievable comraderie and so the fuck what if we're at the bar at 11:05...I mean 11: THIRTY FIVE. Bosses are awesome on 3W too. I would leave but it'd be tough to find that anywhere else. My partner was telling me the difference between working in 008 several years ago and working in 006 now and how 008 was very impersonal. As far as 006 goes I told him that we're all stuck in shit for the time being and all we got is each other. A little hallmark-ish but true nonetheless.
