Hi Frank Main!

Evidently, Frank is reading this site or we are channeling Frank. One or the other. From Monday's Sun Times:
  • More than 130 Chicago Police cars have been equipped with global positioning systems to allow supervisors to keep tabs on where the cars go and how fast they travel, officials say.

The GPS devices were recently placed on vehicles in the citywide Special Operations Section, which suffered a black eye in September when four officers in the unit were charged with invading homes and robbing people.

  • "Absolutely, this could be a disciplinary tool," Risley said. "Is that a reason why we're buying them? Absolutely not."

The primary reason for the devices is to ensure officers' safety when they are on patrol, Risley said.

"If an officer is lost or injured, we can find them," he said.

Hahahahahaha. "could be used"? How about WILL be used. The jury is still out in our opinion - we are reading the previous comment sections with great interest. Is GPS a good thing? Well, it's definitely bad news for the dogs, the people who lay down on jobs, the people who never show up at jobs and those who try to put one over on the system. By the same token, being attached to an electronic tether will diminish a lot of the luster that makes certain units attractive and it only takes one incident of it being used punitively to further dampen already low morale.

We suppose it'll depend on how it's used. We've been called "pessimists" by certain people, but we've never been disappointed having low expectations of this Department and our political masters.

No, I don't like GPS either, but welcome to the 21st Century Ladies and Gentlemen. Other Departments both large and small have had this for years. I am sure that those of us who are smart will learn to adapt and adjust.

Plain and simple. GPS is being used because our supervisors are useless!!!!!!!!! If the Sgts did what they are paid to do we wouldn't have this problem. Instead of sucking up to the WC or the DC why not go out on the street and lead, supervise, say anything!!!!!!!!!

GPS in the cars won't save anybody. In 12 years on this job I don't remember one incident where this would have saved anybody. When your on a foot chase the car isn't moving but you are. If you wanted to help us put it in the radios!!!!! I've never gotten lost while driving and we don't chase anybody in cars anyway. I've called out the wrong streets in a foot chase more than a few times.

GPS is for big brother to watch over you period. No fun or independant thought on this job. Slave do what you are told!!!!!!!!!!

Those of us with a brain have said many times that this dept would have bankrupted 30 years ago if it were in the private sector. Were getting a some private sector management right now. Squeeze every last breath out of the officers your have and we won't have to hire anyone. This saves us money in the long run to as driving the police crazy will certainly take 10 years off their lives.

I was just wondering because I really don't know and a little lazy to do research. Can anybody get GPS monitoring info? I mean can the general public pick it up? If so (and I mean only "IF") wouldn't that be a useful tool for criminals too?

Just a tought about the GPS. Is it reviewed by supervisors only or does OEMC now have the ability to see where cares are at in real time? If OEMC sees it and then begins to dispatch cars that just happen to be close to the scene, does that not vilate the crap ass CAPS protocals that govern dispatching beat and sector cars?

Wrap the antannae in tin foil, or put a large soup-type can over it. Can't track what you can't get a signal from. :)

Fuck em.

Also, you could just wait a month after its installed. Nothing works for shit in this city.

You are wrong sir. I remember back in oh, say around 1985 or so, Officer Carl Torrise who was working the 1st watch in 018 failed to show up for checkoff. We couldn't find him and eventually had to implement a plan. Naturally when he woke up from a deep sleep he went in. But if we had GPS back then, we wouldn't have wasted a couple of hours looking for him not to mention the genuine concern we had for his well being.

The stock will tank in 6 months. Webtech will be short on cash because a customer failed to pay the bill on time.
At which time the customers access to the GPS data will be turned off.

So sell in 5 moonths.

I also remember a morning when Jerry Hedberg (005 RIP) failed to show up for roll call. The search wasn't so frantic however--we just went to the "Over-the-river-and-through-the-woods" hole that he favored and woke him up.

In 24 years can't think of another single instance when we "lost" a copper. Have seen, however, badguys jump into running squad cars and take off. GPS may have saved them from the asskicking they got when caught.
