New Blood?

Missed this one on Sunday - From Channel 7:
  • More than three-thousand applicants are taking the Chicago police exam today. Applicants at four City of Chicago colleges are taking the test during morning and afternoon sessions. It's the last time the test is being offered this year.

    The Chicago Police Department initiated an unprecedented outreach campaign in hopes of receiving more minority applicants.

    Chicago Police Superintendent Phil Cline says the minority-recruitment effort is necessary because it's vital the department reflect the city's residents.

3,000? Remember the days of 35,000?

Sorry off topic a bit but,
I never wanted to be the police, I had a cush secretary job, got to wear high heels and work downtown in nice clothes. My parents made me take the test, they thought that wilh the pay, the extra checks( this I was never allowed to discuss in front of my mother)uniform, good vacations, tuition reimbursement, good people, that if I became the police they wouldn't have to worry about my future anymore - they would only have to worry when that phone rings at 3 in the morning. This was 15 years ago, started out at around $27,000 and now I'm somewhere at $82,000 plus all the extras. For the amount of work we do, granted some do more than others, but for the amount that we do, we make good money. I love the street, 15 years later. I love my taser, it has been very very good to me and my officers. I am lucky enough to be on days in a good district with good people. Lots of new guys that are willing to learn and do anything a sergeant asks them to do without even a "Why"? They know to ask later. Multiple cars on all jobs, even the pimpy ones. For the most part, at the least, 80% of the watch gets along, across all sector lines and we have many get togethers throughout every few months to keep the momentum going. Sure, the job sucks every once in a while, sometimes more than once a day. We usually stick together and try to give a helping hand whenever possible. We have a few rogues, but doesn't everyone. But us older folk all knew going in or had a good idea going in what we were getting ourselves into. These new bloods taking the test - I can't see them getting it when they get here-they will be poor lost souls with an education walking around with their hands stuck in the inside of their vests cause they don't get it. At this stage of the game you need to get with the program fast cause there are not enough properly trained fto's let alone fto's that know what they are doing and that really care about the job, and that is truly unfortunate. The department is turning us patrol rats into a customer service agency. The new guys might be good at that, but leave us who have been here awaile to take care of business the way it's supposed to be taken care of. If any of you knew as you were taking the test that GPS would be stuck to your ass 8hrs a day, would you still take it? By the way, what do you think the depart would say if volunteer officers and bosses decided they wanted rifles/shotguns and they were willing to pay for their own, pay for maintenance, pay for yearly qualification and ammunition and pay for a State course for certification . The city would only have to pay for the locks in the cars. Would the FOP, PBPA, NRA back us. After taking this all into consideration, could this request of the officers and bosses become a negotiated item at talk time-it's coming soon. What has to be done in order for the rank and file to have an item they want to bring to negotiations- and not use to negotiate it away for something else. What do you think, could this be done.

The days of 35,000 taking the test are long gone and so is hiring going by highest scores. Now they have the test several times a year and anyone that applies that can pass the test has a 80% chance of being hired. What is passing, not having a felony background. Until they lift residency most of the people they hire will be welfare to work applicants, but thats what they want.

actually more than 10,000 signed up to take the test during 2006. about 6000 for feb, 3000 for nov, and i'm not sure about the numbers for the other two tests but i'm sure that the cumulative total exceeded 10,000. i sure hope these candidates that they're passing are truly qualified to be the police.

There's nothing wrong with minority's on the job. What appears confusing is the city claiming they had to do an out reach, that makes no sense. The city is already an equal opportunity employer and they claim no door is closed. So, what gives, what is this really about? Indeed it's election time so was this media burp placed as an election gimmick and utilized as a hiring tool ploy for future votes for the Mayor and Alder-impersonator's?

Don't feel too bad - we do the same thing... And it is CALEA that mandates this. Not sure if your agency is CALEA-accredited yet or not, but it's been a pain in the ass to the ISP as far as I'm concerned. WAY too many "new and improved" policies - in order to comply with CALEA mandates and standards.

I came on the ISP in '85, after 9 years with another agency here in IL... At that time, I tested with 10,000 around the state in 6 different locations. I understand the logistics, but can you imagine coordinating that across the STATE, much less the City?

Great post SCC!! I took the test in 1985 at Lane Tech high school, w/ 35,000 people. You waited on Addison and Western to get in the door for an hour. SCC who the f&*k are you LOL?????? Keep up the good work!!

The essence of liberal bulls**t, appearances over competence. But, maybe there's a silver lining in it ater all; "hey, I can't work "there", I'm (fill in the blank), and the residents are mostly (fill in the blank). Good luck to the residents of those areas who are most in need of professional police services....

With more and more heaps of shit that The Dept. gives it's staff (G.P.S., New T.R.R. rules, etc.) more people realize it's not worth the hassle. When the city comes down harder on coppers than criminals, that's truely messed up.

It's amazing how people think by just wearing a badge they are able to live above the law? 022 has made a mockery of the CPD-more so than SOS. Face it, specialized units are expected to have scandal, bribes, brutality beefs etc. The public fears 022 now because these were regular officers. These guys are closer to them than SOS. 022 tac should all be forced to go back to a beat car, so honest coppers in 022 like myself and others can bring back respect. The Academy is even using the 022 tac team as its model for poor ethics. That says a lot...

Hire the best qualified not the best qualified minority. Why should a black family send a kid to Catholic schools when they cater to the underachievers and dummy the test.

The CPD is changing the standards for hiring police because:

1. Daley is giving the Alderjerks what they want.

2. The Alderjerks want their campaign workers to have jobs.

3. The "campaign workers" are thugs who have access to the aldermans offices, and CAPS service requests.

4. This puts them one step ahead of the police. They can then plan all of their thug activities around this.

whats the current head count in the city? has it changed from how it's been the past 3 years. budgeted for 13,500 and we're barely hittn 10,000 coppers out there. what bullshit. you can see it with the back logs everyday, the denied lunches, the "no" time off, no backup. Talk about a freakn safety issue too. 99 units all around the board other than the cars with recruits. crime up, moral down, safety a major concern. we need more police out there. unfortunately, they'll probably fill some (not all) the well needed spots with liberal college no street smart ball-less idiots or gangsters from the ghetto. they've been doing such a great job thus far with bleeding out the thugs and dummies in the background area. Stay safe out there. Watch out. The city is just dieing to F*ck You their first chance they get.

Are you really that stupid? First, have you fucking learned how to use any of the department's technology? Use your pea brain, go onto Data Warehouse, Personnel Reports, and query the various title codes, 9161, 9165, 9171, 9173, 9175, etc. (Of course, I'm speaking greek to you because your a typical whining dipshit.) Those are the main title codes, there are others are for Canine Officer, Marine Officer, E.T., etc... At the bottom of the page you will see the total personnel in those title codes. Now, take both of your shoes off and add up all of those numbers. I know, I know, you're going to say that those numbers are too big for you to count. That's why I told you to take your shoes off, so that you can use your toes to help you. Otherwise, get this new device, its called a calculator. Add up all of those scary big numbers. What do you get? I'll tell you what you get dipshit...its a hell of a lot bigger than 10,000, as your whining, dipshit ass likes to spout off, because it is easier to whine and complain and repeat bullshit that you hear from the other dipshits that you hang out with. Now seriously, if you add up the numbers from all of those title codes (including the obscure ones), you will see that we are over 13,000. So in other words, no one has been lying to you about how many on the department. You will now have to come up with some other whiny reason.

Second, crime is not up...when you have a smaller number of crimes in 2005 than in 2004 and then a smaller number in 2006 than in 2005, we in law enforcement say that "crime is down". I know these are difficult concepts.

Third, the word is morale (with an "e"), not moral. Unless of course you were referring to the 4 idiots in SOS and the 2 bigger idiots in 022. Then it would be accurate for you to say that "moral" is down, as in "they have no morals".

Here ends our lesson grasshopper. (Don't ask kid, it was from a TV show a long time ago, way before cable.)

I'm white, not Irish (and thankful). Do you have to be Irish to be qualified for the police department??

In the olympics and world cup soccer, countries have to QUALIFY. Where are the Irish?? The last few olympics I asked if the Irish were even in the olympics. The world cup?? HAHA

It seems as though YOU think the Irish are most qualified for the police department. That's funny!!
