More Media Bullshit

Note: HUGE POST. We are going to reference a number of Tribune articles in this post. The Tribune is a registered user site. If you want to get in to see all the articles, we've located a free-use password so you can log in and not get all sorts of Tribune e-mail spam.

What is this? Pick on the police day? From the Tribune:
  • Chicago police officials have deliberately ignored corruption within the ranks, giving bad cops a sense of security to commit crimes on the job without being caught, according to a national expert on internal affairs hired by plaintiffs suing the city.

The damning report by Lou Reiter, a former deputy chief of the Los Angeles Police Department, contends that police officials, including Supt. Philip Cline, have continued a "practice of indifference" toward corruption that "makes officers who engage in misconduct feel protected."
Really? Imagine that. Could it POSSIBLY have anything to do with half a dozen other problems, all symptoms of a Department in a morale tailspin?
  • "Merit" promotions by means of a completely secret and unpublished set of guidelines yet obviously politically biased in nature?
  • two (or maybe three) different tiers of discipline. One for blue shirts, one for white shirts, one for politically connected people.
  • a Department thoroughly infiltrated by organized crime, and if you don't believe us, look at who the FBI won't cooperate with.
But the Department isn't wholly to blame. The Department is merely the public face of a political structure so rotten to the core, one only has to look at Tribune's recent headlines to get a feel for it:
Anyone see a pattern here? A license for bribes figure gets his job back, a double dipping pension (triple if you count her school teacher pension), and a bunch of "good" guys going to jail? We do. And our readers do. Why don't the reporters? Are they scared? Or are they complicit in the charade?

There are crooked aldercreatures. And contractors. And governors. And probably mayors, too. But why is it cops getting all the negative press? Because they're mostly unconnected and political lightweights who take the fall and the big prison time because people expect better from the front line of government. And let's face it, we are the most visible arm of the government by far. How often does anyone actually see the mayor or aldercreature driving around if it isn't an election year?

And cops aren't much different than any other member of a large bureaucracy - if certain people feel the leash is a bit loose, they'll try to take advantage. And when they get caught, no one in power knows their name. Because knowing their name would disrupt the REAL corruption that goes on behind the scenes every single hour of every single day.

And whats even worse SCC, is that this county/city corruption cabal is going statewide w/Blago in the office. He's a machine guy all the way: tax the middle class, cuddle the ghetto, take away all law abiding citizens guns.
I was taught, over 20 years ago, by the PO's that broke me in, to hate and never trust the feds. So, it hurts me to say this:
FED Fitzgerald should gain access to a mechanized Infrantry brigade(w/all the skyscrapers i feel Chicago is too dangerous for an airbourne assault)come in this city blasting and house all these thieving MFers, and install a Junta, until we can have some fair elections. Keep all these thieves locked up until their trials are ready, 10 years down the road.
Hey FITZ, if your reading these blogs, the Police(city, county, state)are all behind you. If you come in w/the Army, Im sure even the Fire Dept. will back you!!!!

there clearly needs to be more transparency in the hiring and promoting of officers. as a matter of fact, there needs to be more of it in city and crook county hiring.

could you believe what computer-illiterate bobbie steele is doing after she leaves (according to an interview on fox news two days ago)? she's taking computer classes so that she'll able to send an email on her own. are you f'ing kidding me! that has to be a joke. only in the city and crook county can you have a high ranking official w/out the necessary skills that all of us need to compete in today's world. what a freaking joke! seriously, is her son any better!? i doubt his masters, PhD, or whatever he has from "Kalumet Collage" makes him even remotely qualified for the job.

Officers,

Until the Tribune is outed as the ink-slinger for the leftist think tanks at University of Chicago and at Northwestern, the women and men in Blue will face more such beatings.

The Torture of Trust by these agenda-driven lawyers and journalists is linked to the actions of Peoples Law Office and MacArthur Center for Justice - thus far the Flint/Locke coalition have not cashed in their legal Lotto ticket at the excpense of public confidence in all branches of law enforcement.

The problem with the case discussed on the front page of the Tribune was Ray Risley and Gene Karzcewski determined the outcome of the investigation prior to conducting the investigation. They liked Medzinowski and others involved and allowed that to influence their judgement.

Remember two things - Society gets the police force it deserves and a police force accurate reflects the society it polices. In addition always remember that you should remember just who pays for the study. Big tobacco funds all kinds of studies that say smoking isnt so bad. Therefor if there is a study of corruption financed by someone looking to sue the department and make money well what do you think that study will say? I am sure that they could get a study to say that we are all devil worshipers if there was money in it somewhere.

Yes it does look like pick on the police day today.

How about an, "I am sick-and-tired of every citizen, politician and media whore, knowing more and understanding more about my profession than I do Day"

Examples of this:

Mayor Bloomberg of NYC speaking out in public about the shooting last week doing irrepairable harm to those involved, even though police experts say he is wrong and doesn't know what he's talking about regarding it.

OR

This today..channel 2 news reporter, Rob Johnson (what..did he get fired from abc 7 news?)

Sitting down with the family to learn what went wrong in the hostage taking thanksgiving day incident. WTF?

How about seeking out police experts for their view Rob?

I have a suggestion, since seeking out people who have no idea what we do or what our job entails for articles relating to what WE DO..Lets continue the trend here.

In the future when doing an article on say being Mayor of a big city or when doing a report on Black welfare recipiants, please call me Rob Johnson for my expertiece, Since I am none of the above nor have ever been neither, nor am I a black person.

So consult the experts on "everthing black" aka Jesse Jackson or Mary Mitchell!

Not trying to bring race into it..just trying to point out the absurd!

Hey maybe I can be hired to be a "subject matter expert" for the next police enterance exam, because I am the police. No..wait..I am not qualified because I fall into that group that actually does police work here on "the job"

This news flash just in, AND NO SUPRISE EITHER, a Judge just ruled that CONVICTED former Gov. Ryan can remain free while he appeals his conviction on corruption charges.

He'll never serve a day in Prison now, as Thompson will see to it that the appeals process takes years!

State=Joke

County=Joke

City=Joke

The article states that CPD is practicing 'business as usual.' Give me a fucking break. The entire state practices business as usual under a 'reform' governor. Christ, look at the mess we call Cook County. Our high-ranking government officials steal under the noses of the Illinois taxpayer, but somehow we have CPD to blame for our woes.

Ladies and gentlemen, I laughed out loud when I read this article. True, there are many internal problems in CPD. These issues were instilled years ago and cannot be solved overnight, or without the balls to do so. It wasn't so long ago that CPD brass sat with the leg-breakers at the First Ward table.

I hate to say this, SCC but sadly much of that article is true. How many bosses looked the other way while JF, & company were doing their thing in SOS? And I am not talking about Sergeants and Lieutenants. I am talking about Commanders and higher. Same with Medijanowski. Also what about the rumors regarding several south side tact teams over the years? The list goes on and on. Yes, the chickens have come home to roost. It is time for Phat Phil, and his crew to be shown the door, but that is only part of the problem. The problem lies with everyone in this city, county and state that has blindly voted Democratic all these years.

RBT is only a joke because the supervisors made it so. This is not inherent. Homicide occurs and multiple dics are sent out. But only one gets the paper. ANd not a real homicide either, like the Lefkow murders, but some west side bullshit street corner shooting. While the RBT dick gets a job with 3 in custody for armed robbery, 2 witnesses and 2 victims, and the Sgt gives you the job (without help) like it's a nuisance to him that he must clear off his desk so he can concentrate on the next west side homicide. The robbery victim's are legit and deserve the police service - but the homicide or "west side killing" makes the papers so the shaky bosses play the CYA game day after day after day after day. Gets old. Youth dicsk used to be extremely happry and RBT (or property) was and IS STILL a great job, with real crime, and good victims. But the problem is too many NYPD Blue watchers believing all the hype ...

We aren't really all that surprised a story like this came out, are we? It was due since the last guys got caught, or allegedly caught, depending on your point of view. Just more fallout.

Anyways, as far as the Feds go, they were/are already here and the status-quo still exists, go figure. I dunno about the rest of you, but I think it speaks volumes that after the Pres. spent his 60th with King Richard, things on the Fed probe quieted down, or is it just me thinking that it got quieter?

Transparency on hiring? Great idea. Not gonna happen. Transparency on promotions? Another great idea. Definitely NOT gonna happen. Why would the Department want to show that some of the people being promoted meritoriously are about as competent as a 6 year old in a managerial sense?

IMHO, the main problem with this department (besides the 25%-33% downsizing) is that ALOT of the people soon to be/being promoted/that were promoted are nothing but house mouses. No clue at all on how to be the police, let alone how to supervise those being the police. So, to outsiders it would seem that supervisors turn a blind eye to 'bad' coppers. In reality, those supervisors do see the things going on but are unable to act due to a total lack of supervisory street skills. Think about it, I'll bet each of us can name a supervisor where they work who is awful. I'm betting that that supervisor never worked a day in their life. Coddled on the desk, or in the CAPS office, in a cubicle at 35th street, etc.....you get the idea. I'm also betting alot, if not most of the shitty supervisors are meritorious, go figure.

This leads me to another reason this kinda crap happens: clout (merit). You are a supervisor, you see someone doing something stupid, you bring it up to your boss, your boss tells you: "Don't do anything, Officer So-and-so is ADS So-and-so's (kid/friend/place your choice here)." I'm betting this kinda crap happens everyday, twice on Sundays. Without a doubt, there is AT LEAST a three tier disciplinary procedure in this department

Hell no, politics and politicians run the police department and every other city department. Until the feds look into the politicians in depth and somebody finally rolls on Richie, Blago and County politicians, the same old crap is always going to be here. The most important thing for the politicians is to line their pockets and not the employees of the city departments or the proper equipment needed. All the high tech stuff we are supposedly equipped with. Cameras on every street corner definitely make it safer for the cop on the street. Yeah, my ass. Why worry about giving the police the equipment they need, when it is so important to figure out which politicians or bosses kid should be meritoriously promoted. That's why this department is so ass backwards. 90 per cent of the bosses who run the department and make department policy were never on the street. They went from their PPO training to some desk job or to the caps office. Sheriff Andy and Barney Fife were better trained and equipped than we are. Retirement please hurry up and get here !!!

Two Pilsen area teens walking to school Tuesday morning were shot from a passing car carrying two occupants -- both wearing white face paint, like mimes.
"No words were spoken," said Harrison Area Cmdr. Steve Peterson. "They just opened fire."

The victims -- students at Benito Juarez Community Academy -- survived the attack and remained hospitalized Tuesday night. They were described by neighbors as good kids, innocent victims caught in the gang violence too common in their neighborhood.

Mayor Daley has ordered all criminals doing violent crimes to wear white painted faces. He is hopping this will bring the percentage of white violent criminals up to the various minority races.

I read the Trib article today too. I think it didn't go far enough. I wish these attorneys would talk to "us", the unwashed cloutless masses, we could tell them story after story of corruption ignored, if committed by the "connected" few. God do we need a federal administrator. This persons first act should be to demote everyone promoted in the past 10 years, and just start the command staff all over again, this time with REAL testing. They could start the testing process with a piss test for drugs, hell that would knock out about 25% of the bosses immediately. A literacy test could come next , there goes another 30%, then a practical police exam, presto, no more bosses left. Hey, let me dream OK! it's all I have. The evil twin in me would love to see a 9/11 style attack here in Chicago. The ass clowns running this place would be high comedy trying to "manage" the event, but the angel of my better nature relents, and hopes that innocents are not harmed by the corruption and incompetence.

Police shoot man on S. Side
Chicago Police shot a man in a South Side alley Tuesday night, apparently moments after another shooting in the same alley, police spokeswoman Monique Bond said. Shortly after 9 p.m., officers were investigating near 67th and Prairie when shots rang out. Officers spotted a man with a gun and ordered him to drop it. When the man failed to drop his gun, the officers, "in fear for their lives," shot him, Bond said. The unidentified man was wounded once in the right leg and was recovering at Advocate Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn late Tuesday. A second man, believed to have been shot in a fight before police arrived, lay nearby and was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital to be treated for a gunshot wound to his left knee. Police recovered a Tec-9 and a 9mm semi-automatic weapon at the scene. An investigation, including determining what sparked the initial shooting, was continuing.

This is the report you are complaining about. It clearly states that the officers heard shots ring out while they were investigating another shooting. It further states that the officers saw a man with a gun and that a tec-9 and a 9mm semi-auto were recovered. It even stated that there was another man shot in the leg. I think I would be "in fear for my life". Since that is the only time the police can use deadly force and is a direct quote from the PD spokesperson, it is simply accurate reporting and correct English. This article gives all the facts first and then gives the reason why the police fired shots using a direct quotation from the police spokesperson. It doesn't get any more un-biased and fair to the police than this.

Further, the peron shot by the police would correctly be described as a "gunshot victim" even though we would look at him as a UUW offender. Once he is shot, he is a gunshot victim. If you cannot understand simple English then go back to scgool and stop bitching here about nonsense!!

While your patrolman in the district is getting shit from an inspector for not having a tie, these guys are racking up beefs left and right, making them feel invincible. Its true for almost all of the "fallen stars". Even Jones from 007 had a mama who worked for Hillard and was allowed to lead the city in C.R.s. I would say that thearticle is pretty much on target, when applied to the chosen few.

The comments made by anonymous about Medzianowski being liked by IAD personnel which caused them to not investigate allegations properly are out of line. An extensive IAD investigation was conducted on numerous corruption complaints which were made against several Chicago police officers by an ATF Agent named Klipfel as mentioned in the Tribune
Klipfel at that time also alleged that her ATF SAC Joe Vince and her ATF ASAC were covering up the wrong doing by CPD officers. Medzianowski was one of several officers who Klipfel alleged stole money from a bank safety deposit box on a search warrant from a gang member whom they arrested. How did she learn about the stolen money from the safety deposit box?
Why the trustworthy gang member told her it was so when she took him to ATF Hqs. That same gang member later recanted his allegations in a federal report. The IAD investigation uncovered the fact that the gang member made his theft allegation to Agent Klipfel in a time span before the search warrant was even served at the bank. His allegation could only be true if he, the gang member, could have seen the search warrant being served through the walls of the ATF Hqs. So much for the gang members credibility.

Agent Klipfel was wrong on the safety box theft allegation as well as some of the other allegations she made against both ATF agents and CPD officers

Interestingly, ATF Agent Klipfel later let the gang member's wife live with her and her husband for a while and also made numerous phone calls and even visited that same gang member while he was in a downstate prison. These facts were given to ATF for their own investigation of allegations against CPD officers as well as against ATF agents. By the way, that same safety box theft allegation came to the IAD's attention 6 months after the allegation was made to Klipfel.

That same IAD investigation was later closely scrutinzed by both the federal government and IAD personnel when Medzianowski was arrested several years later on completely different allegations

Liking or disliking Medzianowski never came into the picture but documented facts, telephone interviews, written statements, phone records court documents, recorded telephone conversations and the truthfulness of the parties involved certainly did.
Medzianowski was not known to anyone in IAD until this investigation and they certainly would not have risked their reputations or CPD careers for him or anyone else for that matter.

Please know your facts before casting your own allegations about officers who were trying their best to do a thorough and honest investigation into what actually occurred.

Funny how some people turn on their own when they can make themselves look good. Maybe you should remember taht the FBI, US Atty. ATF, Justice Dept. and IAD investigated allegations against Miedzianowski in 1991 & 1992. No charges were ever brought. WHY? Because the allegations were unfounded. Do you assholes want IAD to fire someone against whom no allegations could be proven or for the feds to put someone in jail on charges that can't be proven.???????

Whatever he did that got him arrested in 1995 or 1996 had nothing to do with the investigation 5 years earlier. You guys are real stand-up coppers.

"according to a national expert on internal affairs hired by plaintiffs suing the city."

That is all you need to know. This "expert" was hired and paid for by a plaintiff's attorney. There is no way in hell he was going to come to any other conclusion, it was the conclusion he was paid to give. In response, the City could(and at trial will) hire their own experts to refute the claims of the plaintiff's experts. At trial, if you have enough money you can get an "expert" to convince a jury that the sky is not really blue. It is a shame that this so called "reporter" picked up the story and attempted to pass it off as fact. The liberal puke media strikes again.

In addition, I hope whoever is hawking the benefit for C.S. is not in reference to the now indicted ex-SOS C.S. This arrogant prick thief can rot in his cell. You might as well throw his benefit in a phone booth. Of course he went to plenty of officer's benefits, he had plenty of extra money to throw around. Only in this county would mutliple politicians work loopholes to pull pensions more than double they deserve, oh and then install their stupid no nothing about politics children into their posts without the voters having a say (yeah three in the past month or two). Hell, they are black and members of the machine, no one could dare call them on it without looking RACIST.

Only in this state would a corrupt governor who was convicted by a jury of his peers be allowed to remain free and will most likely never spend a day in prison.

And people wonder why morale is at an all-time low. Don't believe me? Look at the measly numbers for people who took the last test.

Thank god I am two years from pension. Motherfuck Chicago, Cook County and Illionis.

Montana, here I come.

I worked TRU for three years.
There are a lot of workers, there are dogsasses. Just like any district.

The idea of the unit is noble, even if the amount of police in the ghetto is hugely disproportinate to the numbers of police protecting taxpayers neighborhoods. Coppers homes are getting burglarized and their kids are getting beat into comas but we'll send all the police in the world to go protect the neighborhoods where they don't want us anyhow.

However, districts are dangerously understaffed. Give all that manpower back where it is needed.

I know the city makes tons of money off all the impounds TRU does but why should we continue to line their pockets when we get shit on in return?

I work, invest a few dollars, ive had as many as 3 part time jobs- NO CLOUT- Blue shirt for life....never took a dime. when will this end? Maybe when we get a City goverment that has been cleansed by fire ie. Federal Indictments with jail time

Coppers are a representitive reflection of society. Drunks, Child Molesters, Homosexuals, Lesbians, introverts, extroverts, drug dealers, drug users, thieves etc etc etc.

I refuse to be politically correct- call a spade a spade.

I AM A 17 year veteran CHICAGO POLICE OFFICER. Hence that makes me an asshole, jagoff, undereducated etc etc etc

Was wondering if Politicans can give their positions to family members can I bestow my blue shirt to my son? He has learned a lot about police work by just being my son. It seems to work for Stroger, and Bobbie Steele

The merit system de-legitimizes this dept completely regarding the command structure. One of the new Capts is over 150-200 places behind me on the Lt's list and I still am a Sgt. So that's merit Lt, merit Capt. Oh and, Yes, I made it off the list.

Hi Anonymous,

Are you deliberately distorted the facts to justify your inaction or do actually believe that BS. Everyone in gangs at the time knew what happened on that "search warrant". The only one that Miedzianowski and his fellow rats "fooled" was you. If your investigation was so thorough, why didn't you talk to the guy who gave them the PC to get the search warrant in the first place? Seems like a good place to start, don't you think. Can you also explain why the bank official was ordered out of the room before the box was opened? The only guy that had Joe's number was JF, the rest of you guys just went along for the ride leaving the city holding the tab.

Sorry, SCC. I have to disagree with you on your stand on this article. In fact, the article doesn't even BEGIN to go far enough in exposing not only the bad cops on this job, but some of the highest ranks within the CPD that have gone through extraordinary lengths to protect them. I've been on for about 25 years, and I've seen some real snakes looked after, some even past the rank of Captain. I major housecleaning may be in order, although the so-called "expert" from LAPD doesn't hold much credibility water in my bucket, either.

We think you're arguing the same point we are, just from a different perspective. You see corruption that needs exposing. We see corruption that is a reflection of the political structure.

Everyone knows that the mayor has been working for years to undo the "damage" OW Wilson did by severing the Police Department from the Machine. All that pencil money went to the Machine you know. Well, the mayor is finally using the Department to grease the Machine again in the form of contracts for robots that don't work inistead of modern rifles for SWAT, terrorism planning that involves a bunch of street ignorant politically connected families making way more than they're worth, cameras from vendors that never even went through the testing process, etc.

As the city, mayor and aldercreatures make every single exempt appointment, their corruption is reflected in the command staff and down the line too often. We don't think we're off base and we certainly don't think you are. Just two different approaches.

Actually, SCC, SWAT has plenty of "modern" rifles. Bushmaster M4's with aimpoint scopes and Benelli semi-auto shotguns are pretty MODERN in my book! I believe most of the guys carry state of the arm Sigarms, certainly not cheap handguns. What they have is much more modern than what I see in the radio room (and in the shotgun racks) of the Districts.

SWAT does need additional MODERN equipment, like small camera tubes that can go under doors, listening equipment for HBT incidents, and other stuff. They know they need it, and after the Turkey day incident, it will probably be ordered quickly. By the way, again, hats off to all from SWAT who worked that Turkey day standoff. They did a great job with what they had in truly less than hospitable conditions. Your efforts were appreciated by all who were stuck there for the duration.

Talk about arrogance! they are both still men and still policemen, and last I checked innocent until proven guilty. No one said you have to come or give money or send a word of encouragement, however when you get 10 days for a beef or look for support when something bad happens to you, you should expect the same. I know, no one else on this job has ever done anything wrong or against the law and I'm sure you are the purist of the pure, more likely just lucky, so far.
Everyone out here talks about all that is wrong with this department but we will never get anywhere trying to change it if we as policemen do not stick together. The last man I heard of that did not sin was a guy named Jesus, look what they did to him.
