Political Correctness

Over at Rue St. Michel, he has run across a pathetic example of Political Correctness run amok:
  • The rank and file patrol officers who work in the 25th district were abuzz yesterday when they started to notice that the Christmas tree in the lobby was gone. In its place was a hand-written placard pleading for the return of the "holiday tree".

The Christmas tree was placed in the lobby to support a children's charity. Paper stars on the tree could be picked up by officers or court personnel and a donation in the child's name could be made. There was never any mention of "Christmas" in or around the tree.

Why is this tree being selected for removal? Who knows. Every year an inflatable Santa is erected in the lobby, complete with Christmas lights and decorations. None of that was ever contested, nor removed.
Great. A children's charity. A tree without the word "Christmas" anywhere about. An inflatable Santa. And the best part of it was when they'd deflate the Santa after Christmas and put Crime Scene tape all around the "body" with a case report nearby. THAT was humor.

Let's get this straight. Christmas is a FEDERAL HOLIDAY. Look it up. All people offended by the word "Christmas" ought to get the stick out of their ass and lighten up. Cities across the nation are fleeing the "Holiday Tree" idea and re-embracing Christmas Trees. We don't remember if the tree in Daley Plaza is a Christmas Tree of not, but we remember they erect a Menorah for the Jews, some display for the muslims, and even a big stretch of blank wall with cardboard boxes for the Atheists - or maybe that's just some homeless guy we saw.

The point is, it's Christmas. Freedom of Religion doesn't mean Freedom FROM Religion. Why the war on Christians? Hell, we should be thankful that Christians got us this great holiday for which we can earn time-and-a-half.

UPDATE: We're getting info from a couple of the principals involved in this. Seems that there are allegations that this is a running gag between two individuals (at least one of which has left comments here and at Rue's site) and the petition was full of bogus names like "Baby Jesus" and Matt Rodriguez. If it's a gag, well played boys. If it's not a gag, then people need to lighten up about the word "Christmas." Our rant against political correctness stands however. The example used might be faulty (025), but this isn't anything that doesn't appear in the headlines every single Christmas season anyway - which would lead us to lend credence to the incident actually taking place.

All this PC BS makes me want to vomit. Whoever started it needs to be shot. I'm sick to death of someone telling me how I'm "supposed" to feel because they're different and people won't accept them. I don't embrace that BS - never did, never will.

I have my own set of beliefs and I believe I was raised a good Catholic. I don't push my religion on anyone and I have enough respect for people to make their own choices in their religion - just don't try to stuff it down my throat or try to push it on my kids.

Anyway...

I read yesterday that Toys for Tots turned down an offer of 4,000 dolls because of the dolls' religious nature (they were Jesus dolls). If you're interested in the story, you can read it here.

Okay let's start by getting the story straight before having a shit fit over something. This was a JOKE within the 25th District and wasn't meant to get to this level. If you don't know the story, then don't start a shit storm and obviously you DO NOT know the story. This was a light hearted jabbing within our district and had nothing to do with political correctness or any of the other issues that are being portrayed in your story. Please mind your own business. Appearantly we can not do anything in this district that doesn't get blown out of proportion or taken out of context. So if this doesn't clarify the situation then feel free to contact me. I am one of the instigators in this issue. I work days in 25. So rather than bother my Commander with nonsense bullshit call me if this isn't clear enough. Our holiday jokes, in the past have always been received as jokes, including Santa being killed,(the crime scene that was mentioned), as well as Santa being kidnapped and held hostage, but I guess the Christmas tree is a more sacred object and needed to be left alone.
Yes I am a real officer here and yes that really is my name. So again please leave it alone and we'll try to find less sensitive joking material.

I'm sooooo tired of political correctness gone mad. Did anyone read the story a couple of weeks back of that bitch in some south side suburb that refused to put her city sticker on her car because it had a cross on it (The image had a cross at a gravesite memorializing all of the soldiers who have died in past wars.) She stated she was an atheist and did not want that horrible image displayed on her vehicle. Come on, it's not like there's a swastika on your car. Anyway the village caved in and they cut the friggin image from her city sticker. I glad Wal-Mart decided to bring back Christmas back to their stores-at least someone had some balls.

There is a concerted fight against Christianity occurring everyday and you don't see us bombing building and killing innocent people because of it. Here is a great example, Piss Christ. Some bung hole took a plastic crucifix and submerged it in a container of his own piss and he calls that art. Many believed it was tasteless and offensive, but were people burning effigies of this guy or starting riots like the Muslims did when the Pope quoted a passage from 1391???

Regardless Christmas is a time of year for giving and sharing kindness. I'm sick of the 2nd watch BS, and no it was not the commander who lobbied to have it taken down

Someone in the comments area at RSM is saying that the Charity tree was taken down because all the stars were gone and the charity drive was over.

That is not the case. The supervisor said the tree was taken down because of "First amendment rights."
Even the front office in 025 is predicting a "Grinch" Christmas this year for the station.

I hope the tree comes back - with gangbangers actively targeting the police for murder, it's a sad day when a supervisor's main concern is a christmas tree in the lobby!

I don't think the D/C would appreciate getting inundated with phonecalls but a letter would probably help.

God bless/Stay safe/Merry Christmas!

Ok. I've had enough of this politically correct religious persecution against Christians. This goes WAY too far! The Christmas tree is really NOT a Christian symbol....why remove it? I would understand if it was a manger scene, but a christams tree?! Is it because most Christians celebrate the season with it? If that is the case, then there should be no Halloween decorations, which actually celebrates all-saints day.

Even if there is a modern connotation between a Christmas tree and Christianity, this country was founded by Christians who left the old world SO THEY COULD ESCAPE A CLIMATE OF INTOLERANCE. Now this crap?!? If YOU don't think YOU can tolerate a Christian holiday or believe that there is no place for (any) god in government, kindly hand over you $ marked with God and get the hell out... This has become a politically correct, no fun, no freedom zone....our children cannot say the pledge in school because its one nation under god, it has become happy friggin holidays intead of merry christmas, stores have holiday or xmas sales, and now no tree in a police station? It's not like its a cross!!!! Don't Christians have equal rights?!? Even if you are not Christian, can't you differentiate between a christams tree that santa puts presents under from a religious manger scene? What the hell is wrong with you people? Did you have shit cereal for breakfast?! There are plenty of countries that don't tolerate freedom of religion, give one of them a try.

on topic and in the realm of political correctness the following information will make all working coppers fume.

The other day an inspector aka overpaid do nothing hunk of garbage came into the 025th district and went into the gang office and instructed a gang sgt to take down all the sweaters ,pictures and anything that would be helpful to identify gangs and their colors. These items have been mounted in a way to assist as a training tool and to show all the hard work that has been accomplished over the years on gangs in the 025th district. some of these sweaters were as old as 20-25 years old. the inspector told the working sgt that all items had to come down as it was a liability factor.

LIABILITY FACTOR ?? to take a phrase from the past political election, what was he thinking ?

political correctness is being used as a scapegoat for something else. NO BALLS ......

I think they should abolish the inspector position and funnel that money into better areas of this police department.

I watched the inspector drive the 025th district lot last night at ck off looking at all the license plates of the coppers and checking city stickers.

What a waste of money !!

one thing that is not needed on this department is the inspector position.

funny thing was as he drove the parking lot looking for movers he himself was not wearing a seat belt....hmmm do as I say not as i do police department.

shame on you mr inspector. i say mr because you are not the police.

be safe out there

MISSING CHRISTMAS TREE? Bigger issue then some may think.

Alright, whose the responsible resurrected reincarnated Puritan who still does not understand the Winter Solace and the meaning of the thriving Evergreen? Christ was allegedly not born in December but said to be born in Sept., so what is this really about? Without further knowledge it appears to either be Christ and a thriving, enduring tree that supposedly represents Christians or is it about discrimination towards originating Germans in Pennsylvania who brought the oddity of the tree indoors or just the plain ignorance of the meaning of Winter Solace?

In the mean time I'm sure the Mayor will light the Huge, yes CHRISTMAS Tree at the Plaza and the President of the United States of America will do like wise and light our OTHER huge, yes CHRISTMAS Tree.

Who ever is responsible for the missing tree needs to step forward and be called out by name especially if their belief is so strong that they force it upon so many others on a Federal Holiday! Or are you a under the desk coward with no leg to stand on? Lay out your basis for eliminating the tree and fight like a real man or woman if you feel you have some sort of substantiated conviction and proof for your sole Grinch reasoning!

It is not surprising that, like many other festive Christmas customs, the tree was adopted so late in America. To the New England Puritans, Christmas was sacred. The pilgrim's second governor, William Bradford, wrote that he tried hard to stamp out "pagan mockery" of the observance, penalizing any frivolity. The influential Oliver Cromwell preached against "the heathen traditions" of Christmas carols, decorated trees, and any joyful expression that desecrated "that sacred event." In 1659, the General Court of Massachusetts enacted a law making any observance of December 25 (other than a church service) a penal offense; people were fined for hanging decorations. That stern solemnity continued until the 19th century, when the influx of German and Irish immigrants undermined the Puritan legacy. ( The battle was already won a long, long time ago.)

P.S. who actually controls the physical interior of the District? Think on this one. Yes, there may be a Commander but he does not own or run the physical portion of the bldg. Go up the chain, if the Commander is enacting this he is out of his league, since when did he become the real bldg/property land lord! There's principle involved in this and democracy, as silly as that may sound it's true. If he or she responsible wants to really eliminate the tree, let them take it to court!

Whose the Alderperson. How about the residents who pay taxes for the property and utilize the facility, there's a lot of citizens in Chicago! Call Cline and Daley as well. This nonsense and violation of other's rights is getting way out of hand.

We didn't jump the gun on anything. Rue St Michel wrote a nice little piece - we linked to it - we offered our opinion on our blog. How is that any different than a couple of coppers chatting over coffee?

As to our church going habits, we'll confess to being non practicing. What does that have to do with anything? We aren't imposing our belief or lack of belief on anyone. We aren't dictating religion. We merely point out that Christmas is a FEDERAL holiday. You don't have to celebrate it - and we aren't asking anyone to celebrate it. But we are asking that other people acknowledge that the fact that there is a large number (maybe a mjority) of people who DO celebrate it and should be allowed to.

There is no "Freedom from being Offended" in the Constitution. We looked. As to our being a smartass, guilty as charged. But the fact remains that you are arguing points we never made or implied.

There is a constant ribbing going on within the station in 025. We have the kind of relationship that allows us to Mock the bigots and anti-semis through, what could be looked at as endearment. The verbal exchanges to an outsider would be looked at as...well...ODD to say the least, but we in 025 enjoy the wit. As the Holiday season approaches and the different culture's holidays parallel, the BULL SHIT enhances, rival to that of "Blazing Saddles".
The tree in question, was set up as a head start to our annual secret santa for the under priveledged and/or physically challenged children at one of the local schools, under the immediate notice tha the tree would be taken down once all student "star ornaments" were gone, and reassembled when the holiday nears. With the Channukah/Christmas debate in full bloom, the game began with someone passing a rumor tha the tree was removed due to protest from one of the "non-Christian" members. THIS WAS FED, and FED until it snowballed and started all this current backlash. I assure you that it was a joke. I assure you further that any hint of controversy is manufactured solely for the entertainment value and not a hatred for Christmas, Christians, or anything else.
We have been decorating for Christmas (The holiday season) for years and have been complimented on our decor. We have never been scrutinized, but praised.
One Squad car a few years back had a Santa Clause, a mennorah (sp), and a tree painted on its rear windows and it was hilarious.
Thats the scoop.

A Christmas Tree does not fall under 1st Amendment Rights. Whose the responsible party that is being allowed to dictate and shove this loony act of removing the Christmas tree on all the others in and about the 25th District? They don't have a leg to stand on, what ignorant goofs.

As to the Commander he had to be aware this action was going to take place or does one really trust he had nothing to do with it including the knowledge of the tree gone missing. It appears the Commander was well aware and I ask, who cares if he does not want the phone calls? Especially since it now appears he allowed it to happen under a phony amendment claim.

Excerpt from 2005 over not using the word Christmas and using Happy Holidays instead.
Even though batteries of Christian lawyers are threatening to “save Christmas” by suing the “happy holidays” offenders, most of these fights aren’t First Amendment issues. It would only be an establishment-clause problem if government or school officials used the holiday to promote religion. But since Christmas is also a national holiday and courts tend to view Christmas trees and Santa as secular symbols, the government can put up decorated trees and call them whatever they like.

The Supervisor is dead wrong!

AND........ why did the tree have to come down just before the holiday just because the stars were picked from it? Whose determination was that? Why was it not added to with other decor then removed after the holiday's? What was the point of a short standing tree again. In case you have not noticed the holiday is already here and was when the tree went down! B.S.

If you do not celebrate Kwanza why did you care who was the first to come up with the idea? So, African-Americans wish to celebrate the land of their heritage. What is wrong with that? I guess freedom of expression around here is only for the European-American, eh? More racism from law enforcement. How sad.

You, sir, are sad. Waaaaa. Prove that anyone saying anything here is law enforcement. Im telling you now that im the tooth fairy. so, if i say something really, really offensive, then you are going to blame the tooth fairy? Or blame whitey? I'm not going to assume you are black, even though you assume that everyone here is white law enforcement. For all I, or anyone else knows, I typed a bunch of crap as Malcom X Little Brother, just for a laugh. So, am I the tooth fairy? Am I you? Am I law enforcement? Or am I a conservative black man who has made it and moitors blogs from time to time? Tell me, smarty pants! OH, and many non-european people have inhereted and aweful lot from this land as well....link cards, free school, free housing.... So, please, don't cry to me. or you. or the tooth fairy.
Signed,
The ANONYMOUS maybe white, possibly black law enforcemtnt tooth fairy

Malcolm says

Since Kwanzaa was invented in California are you finally admitting that the USA is the land of your heritage?

Also if you are going to be soooo politically african than at least in your post's you should spell Kwanzaa correctly. OR is it that you really dont care except to stir up crap?

oh and as preemptive there is not more than one way to spell it. The guy that invented it spelled it only one way.Kwanzaa creator Dr. Maulana Karenga.

Read your history of Chicago, in the mid 1800' the area were 025 was built on was an ancient Indian burial ground. The land is cursed by the souls buried under the building.

Ask the old timers that worked the 1st. watch when the station was first built. No one wanted to be alone in the locker room.........NO ONE
