This Thing Gets a Shotgun?

Where's ours?
  • Channel 2: Chicago now has its own RoboCops just like in the movies. City officials are touting the arrival of three new robots the city will use to diffuse bombs.
  • Channel 7: The Chicago device is armed with a water cannon but on the web page the manufacturer says it may also be armed with a shotgun.
Now we know where some of the money "saved" via understaffing is going - four robots at $135,000 a piece. Which mayor's cousin is the vendor for these things? Or lobbyist for the firm? Or connected party - because someone is making money off this. It's the Chicago way!

UPDATE: Technical problems at the roll out.

OFF TOPIC:

Now that the elections are over I read that the state legislators voted themselves an almost 10% pay raise. State Sen. Ricky Hendon stated essentially that because he fought hard to increase the state minimum wage for his constituants, that he too deserves a pay raise, stating "I work my Butt off!"

Are you listening FOP?

You better see that these state legislators approve any of our pending(pension legislation) bills, AND that these alder-creatures give us a raise, not just a dollar amount.. BUT, a C.O.L.A. (cost-of-living-adjustment) just like they approved for themselves earlier this year.

This is getting out-of-hand with these ass-wipes only enriching themselves at our expense!

135K per robot? Paaaaleeese.....The CPD had to go thru the procurement process. The manufacturer of these robots is he/she a minority business contractor? By the time these got into the hands of the CPD they cost about at least 175K.

The City doesnt usually buy straight from the manufacturer. They go thru a middle-man that is usually a Mebeweebee (minority/woman owned business enterprise) that has jumped thre the hoops. That way the city can disavow any appearance of impropirity(sp).

Nice to know they spend over one half of a million dollars on some robots.

How about PDT's that WORK for the guys in the streets, not even asking for the Toughbooks with I-Clear because only a select few districts have those?

How about shotguns/rifles for the working police? Wouldn't even cost the city a dime, we'll buy them and qualify out of our own pocket. No, we'll have to wait until a few of us get gunned down in the streets before it will even be brought up. Even then it will get rejected because the ministers and reverands who deliver the votes to the corrupt democratic machine don't want the odds to be evened.

How about hiring more PO's? Oh, I forgot. According to Phil, we have 13,500! How stupid of me. Even if the number is more like 8,000 and even then how many thousands of those don't work the street.

How about a CPD firing range in the city that PO's can use 24/7. Godforbid we are allowed to stay proficiant with our firearms, we may actually kill more people in shootings and the city will have to pay out more money to the shitbag families.

How about a state of the art gym that PO's can use 24/7. Not that delapitated dump at Homan Square that you can only use a few hours a day. Lest we forget we all work different watches. Again, how stupid of me, all CPD coppers are in GREAT shape!

God does work miracles....on to other things. Yeah, I heard the guy who struck the copper was drunk also. But has anyone seen the recent stats of DUI's written per District? Just about every District is down from last year, with a few exceptions. Remember, the drunk driver you decide to give a pass to could be the one to bring tragedy to your own front door. We're getting close to the time of year when there are more of them on the road. If you stop them and they're impaired, remove them from the streets. You just might save another cop's life in the process.

Everone like how state lawmakers just voted and passed their 13% pay raise? Nice that we can't even get a cost of living hike because it is too damned expensive to own a house/live in this city.

After mortgages, property taxes, city stickers, private school tuition, highest taxes in the nation on everything from gas to "entertainment" taxes (my personal favorite), etc. most coppers are lucky to have two nickels to rub together at the end of the day.

I see St Charles PD is hiring at $50k a year. Suburbs don't look too bad these days.

I wonder how many officers will take advantage of the 100 rounds per calendar year of ammo (compliments of the city) we now get to use at the range. Coppers all bitch, but I guarantee you, knowing coppers, that minimal use of this program will made. Also, the academy is renovating the workout area and according to the ADS when it is done it will have Bally type equipment and be available 24/7. Let's see how many people will take advantage of that, or will they just move on and bitch about something else? Just a thought.

It doesn't suprise me that they trust a machine with a shotgun and won't even let us keep em in the trunk.

A Bank of America type shoot out is gonna happen here in the City of Chicago and when dozens of coppers are dead, wounded badly, or just generally fucked up about it, the department might do something about it. Chicago had a record number of bank robberies this year and there are no signs of slowing down, especially now that Christmas is coming.

One or two SORT are not gonna do the job based on geography of the city. This is not a rip on the SORT cars, but these asshole drivers do not give a sh*t about us and they will not move out of the way when our mars lights are on. Unless these cars are close to the shootout, there will be tragic results. Just imagine if a lone beat car pulled those ass wipes about to do the hit with the AK, we would be at a copper funeral for sure. We are outgunned.

We are all grown-ups here and I would be willing to actually purchase a shotgun and attend training with my own money if I could have one in the trunk.

"Frank took what seemed an eternity to get up the first step and stumbled on the second before falling backward. Fortunately, it never did tip over.
But the demonstration was so painfully slow, it was tough to envision Frank easily doing what Cline said the robot could do: Locate suspicious devices, defuse bombs, detect hazardous chemicals or send messages and food to suspects and captives in hostage situations.

Afterward, Trotter was visibly annoyed.

Mike Gerhardstein, commanding officer of the bomb squad, was hard-pressed to explain the robot's stumbles.

"Part of the reason was the steps are kind of rickety. Secondly, there was carpeting on the steps and it was slipping on the carpet. That's a very tough challenge for them to go up," Gerhardstein said."
------------------------------------

Well good to know with the hundreds of thousands of dollars spent, these robots cannot even move on carpet. Godforbid it encounters a STAIR!

SPRINGFIELD -- With the election behind them, senators on Thursday gave themselves and other top elected and appointed officials a pay raise of nearly 10 percent.

The move by the state Senate came a day after members approved a dollar-an-hour increase in the state's minimum wage, an action several lawmakers used to justify fatter wallets for themselves.

"When I fight for a minimum wage increase for everyone else, I need to fight for myself," said Sen. Kimberly Lightford (D-Maywood), who sponsored the increase in the state's minimum wage.

The lowest-paid rank-and-file lawmaker would see a $5,524 boost in pay, to $63,143 a year. Legislative leaders would receive a pay hike of $7,762, to $88,719.

"We are underpaid," said Sen. Rickey Hendon (D-Chicago). "If you reject a raise for yourself, you're saying you're not worth it. And I don't know about all of you, but I worked my butt off for the people of the 5th District, and I deserve this little cost-of-living" increase.

Hey SCC, how about a thread on Tactical Readiness or Tactical Advantages. Have officers share there ideas to help other officers stay safe on the street. I'll offer two: 1) too many officers have there knives exposed, without any safety, to the common criminal. Remember that should you get into a wrestling match your knife is another weapon that you have to be concerned about and maintain control. Have it somewhere that is not visible to the general public, but easily accessible to you. I keep mine inside my waistband, by the zipper. Away from others yet accessible to me and 2) when a bank has a "hold up" alarm the officer, after recieving the dispatch, should have the zone contact the bank and have an employee step outside to make contact with the responding officer(s). My concern is that in a city like Chicago, with bank robberies on the rise, one of us are going to walk into a bank robbery/hostage situation. If the bank employee doesn't meet the officer we then know to proceed with greater caution or possibly have a bank robbery/hostage situation. Stay safe and buckle up.

More Fallout on the Hiding Homicides Story In Chicago

A copper friend of mine recently made a telling statement about WBBM-TV’s Top Gun Investigative Reporter, Pam Zekman. “She’s like the ACLU, you hate her until you need her”, said an old North Side, now Area 3 robbery dick.

Zekman caught up with Chicago Police Superintendent, Phil Cline and Mayor Daley. I never saw Cline run so fast as he did with Zekman chasing him and biting at his chubby ankles. The exchange was one of the more memorable moments for me in television news history. Zekman laid her evidence right before Daley and Clines’s blinking eyes. What could they possibly say now?

Sit back and watch but don’t have any food or drinks around because they may well wind up on the floor!

ANOTHER OFF TOPIC:

I couldn't even tell you the content of the story but the Chicago police released the description of an offender, being a MALE WHITE-HISPANIC. Fine...ok...thats good, at least we have a race description. Why is it (AND i KNOW IT'S BEEN DISCUSSED BY SCC BEFORE) that when it is a male BLACK, the media only says "MALE" are we not suppose to know it's a male black? Is it a guessing game? Should all MALES be suspect? IF YOU ARE GOING TO PUT OUT A DESCRIPTION OF AN OFFENDER, SHOULDN'T SPECIFICS BE A FACTOR??? What are these people afraid of ??? Will the westside pastors bitch?

OFF TOPIC BUT VERY IMPORTANT!

I work 016, and as of Monday we will be "wired". Let me explain. ALL patrol cars in 016 will have lightbar activated camera AND audio recording, up to 1000 feet from the squad. This is very very bad. The WC is tasked with monitoring the activities of the cars and all traffic stops will be recorded and achived. Even if we give our fellow officers and their families a "pass" the incident will be recorded. A green card MUST be completed, and the WC will be nit-picking our decisions. If you are a drinker BEWARE!!!, if you are one of those hold the badge out the window and wave types...BEWARE!!! reckless drivers...BEWARE!!! If you simply can't shut-up telling about where you work and for whom, BEWARE!!! The mayor is out to screw the only republican ward in the city, and as many city workers as he can. I must repeat, this is VERY BAD!!! Why the exempt knuckleheads down town chose 016 defies the imagination, and by the way Einsteins WE KNOW WHERE YOU LIVE IN THIS DISTRICT, WE WILL BE USING THIS ON YOU AND YOUR TOO!!!!
And of course the routine question WHERE IS THE UNION!!!
I often wonder if they can make this job suck more than it does now, and sure as hell, they manage to out do every fuckup with a bigger one. This has to be the biggest turd floated in modern times. We, the officers of 016 will be CRed for not doing our jobs ( read ticket slow down), or not using our lights, or disabling them, or not reporting that they are disabled, etc. The supervisors will be disciplined for not hammering us PO's, and inspectors will be second guessing any "discretion" we extend.
You think I exagerate, READ THE ORDER!!! this is typical Huberman gay paranoia gone wild. YOU ARE WARNED!!!

Here's some food for thought.
On Monday, 20Nov06, both 005 & 016 (as well as Traffic) will be live on the "in car video". What this means is that when the lite bar goes on, so does the video and audio recorders. That means if, a PO (or family there of) is pulled over for a traffic offense, those little green traffic contacts cards are going to have to be filled out and submitted. That's because when the stop record button is pushed, either a ticket number, event number, or contact control number is suppose to be entered along with the "reason for stop code" selected.
It also means please understand our plight, because soon enough these cameras are coming to a car near you.

Big deal, turn it off, the suburbs have had them for years wiht no problems, just don't get mouthy because it will bite you in the ass!

You should get a couple of years on, grow some chin whiskers, lad, then come back and talk trash.

Go hide behind your mommy, now.

The reason the Districts are so short is because TRU is manned over budget....WAAAAAY over budget.
You kids wouldn't know the first thing about real policing if it smacked you in the face. You guys/gals are just so new, they have brainwashed you. GOD forbid you ever have to answer a domestic. You wouldn't know what to do.
Isn't it past your bedtime?

The unit is not over budget, it's under-manned like everywhere else, the average time on the job in the unit is 4 or 5 years. Most of the personnel in the unit are from working districts, 011, 010, 015, 007, 006, 004 008 so blow it out your ass with your bullshit already, domestics are real tough, someone goes to jail or leaves, period, and before you start, I've been on over 12 yrs, all on the west side.........

Visiting from ISPeeved...
We have in-car video cameras and have had them for a few years now. They are the old analog, VCR based recorder in the trunk kind. The camera is also supposed to be activated when the lightbar gets turned on, but that is easily defeated by a separate on-off switch on the camera itself. Policy requires that all public contacts, whether enforcement or assist, be recorded for officer safety reasons, and to back up the officer in the event that a complaint comes in. Supervisors are to randomly review an officers tape an average of once a month to check for compliance. The in-car cameras have been both a curse and a blessing. When they capture something that helps an officer out they are great, but when the opposite happens, well, it sucks. Hopefully, your officers will continue to be able to exercise discretion by just flipping off the power to the camera. Also, the wireless microphones that are worn by the officer are notorious for malfunctioning. Lastly, we are required to inform the violator that he/she is being recorded at the initial contact. There are lots of issues with these cameras, some good and some not so good. Your officers will quickly learn how to live with this technology without giving up individual discretion or decision making ability.
Stay safe CPD.

We used to get dismissed at 20 minutes after the hour in S.O.S.. What time do YOU get released, on the hour perhaps?

You think you know what you are talking about but you really don't.

The bosses in S.O.S. wanted people available if something happened and the districts needed immediate manpower.

You don't know jack.

Mayor said Chicago was 1st in advanced technology, right? So how is it that OshKosh use of a roboCop beat us out by 3 yrs. with their own RoboCop from a Homeland Security Grant in 03? Once again were behind times and mimic others.

By Jason Allen

When police officers in Oshkosh dealt with Wednesday's dangerous standoff, they brought in some backup from the Brown/Outagamie County bomb squad. A robot the bomb squad bought to handle bombs has become a useful tool for other law enforcement situations, too.

The robot, with its motorized treads, climbed the stairs and entered the Oshkosh home when officers didn't know where the gunman might be.

Purchased in 2003 with a homeland security grant, the 500-pound machine's first purpose was to keep bomb squad members from having to handle potentially-explosive materials by hand.

TRU Bashing:
If any of you attened the DOC meeting Friday, you would know they made two arrests for a saw-off shotgun and a pistol after a Dick was threaten the night before in 007.

One of the P.O.' got hit by a car chasing one of the banger's and got up and caught him.

They are always seen on the streets like a wolf pack, backing other units up.

And of course the routine question WHERE IS THE UNION!!!

There is no union. Just a bunch a guys with the mayors spooge on their face. FOP will not do a damn thing for us. Face it, the only way to play is to beat these jerks at their own game.

Answer your calls. Make as much paper as you can. Give great Police service for each and every call. Let everything back up. And dont initiate a damn thing on your own. If it wasnt assigned, it didnt happen!
